"We basically had a caveman up front, which was great." Blimey - sounds like he was leading the booing on Tuesday.

Of all the hot air spoken during the Ched affair by so many supposed celebs, Paul Heaton entirely reflected my own point of view and from the moment he spoke about the issue I learned who he was and that I respected him simultaneously.

True Blade, for want of a better expression.

I have met and drank with Mr Heaton many times over the years................met him at the Lane as well as many obscure and unglamorous places supporting the Blades and he always had time to shake a hand and share a beer..................I also used to live in the next street to him when he lived in Hull and met him a few times over there..= bizarrely....our local night-club's head Bouncer was also from Sheffield (and a Blade to boot) so nights there always used to turn into Blades-fests....whatever people think of his Ched stance (I have my own opinion too)......he IS...WAS and ALWAYS will be a Blade....p.s. his music is pretty fookin good !!!!!

Spot on mate

So your the person at the end of a ITK thread, you know my girlfriends brothers dads mates son? ;)

Unfortunately, whilst obviously a Blade, he lost all my respect when he chose to step down as a Community Foundation Patron in order to publicise himself and his forthcoming tour rather than help the club in a time of need and more recently his ridiculous, extreme left wing views over Unions and their effect on TFL/Tube strikes and steel industry decline and associated job losses. A true Champagne socialist if ever there was one

Personally, I class him in the same bracket as the vile Charlie Webster.

At the risk of creating another Ched thread, Heaton said at the time that Ched should be allowed to continue his career, but given the rift between fans, sponsors etc at the Lane, he thought that he should choose another club. It sounded a bit of an off-the-cuff comment at the time, which I found a bit puzzling, but at least he spoke his mind and wasn't echoing the same views as all the other high-profile Blades. He wasn't seeking publicity but he was asked and gave a response.

If that was the case then it is strange then that so strong were his views on the subject that he felt he still had to stand down from his role with the Foundation (a linked but seperate organisation to the club). Stranger still that he did so just at the start of a national tour and went on to give multiple interviews/publicity opportunities as a result of his actions. Even stranger still is that I don't recall him, or any of the other Patrons, taking such a stance or making any such statements when a certain Marlon King was signed by the club or when Jordan Robertson was convicted of causing death by dangerous driving whilst emplyed by the club. I wonder whether the lack of media attention had anything to do with it.

Perhaps following the actions of Sean Bean (who had no need to seek publicity over the incident) - another Sheffield born Patron & supporter of the club, would have been a more appropriate. As it was he chose not to and as far as I'm concerned, he, just like Charlie Webster, are finished with the club and will never regain my support or respect.

I think people ought to move on, PH felt strongly enough to resign over the CE saga that was his choice end of. Nobody knows if PH, CW or JE made their views of Mk and CE prior to their resignation. Anybody who thinks it was down to promoting their own career as an excuse for not wanting a convicted rapist at the club IMO are well off the mark.

You could also argue that in going public and pressurising the club not to sign CE, they saved them from a massive PR disaster.

Saved who? the board/ Phipps brought a PR disaster to the clubs door for nothing.

That's your opinion Derry and you're entitled to it. You're quite right in saying that none of us know what, if anything, was said by those Patrons regarding King and Robertson but what we do know is that none of them felt strongly enough that they had no option to (publicly) resign from the roles of an organisation seperate to the club and one that does tremendous work in the community, impacting its reputation and bringing negative publicity to it as a result.

If they feel they can no longer be associated with the club, why is the majority of Heaton's interview (& publicity opportunity) based around his support for it? Does he have another album out or tour planned by any chance?

The only people who brought any negative publicity to the club were KM, JP and any other members of our board who wanted CE anywhere near the club. To later retract the offer stating we didn't realize there would be such a wave of opinion against CE smacks of incompetence.

Indeed. Because if all the prominent United fans had kept their mouths shut there would have been no negative publicity at all.

Utter tosh! Every 'celebrity' who decided not to stand by the club in its time of need decided to use the opportunity to abandon it and their roles for their self-publicity/gain and gave little or no thought to the impact their decision would have on the club.

The only one I have some (albeit not a lot) sympathy for is Ennis who simply asked for her name to be removed from the stand as a result of huge pressure from the feminazis. Whether her name should have been added in the first place is another argument.

To clarify, I am not one of the pro-Ched movement. Personally, I never wanted him (or King) at the club whilst he still had the conviction to his name but take huge exception to those who used the incident for their own personal gain - Heaton and Webster being by far the two biggest culprits.

At least it will make the club consider much more carefully who to appoint to appoint to such roles in future.

I would love to see the solid evidence of this self promotion, it couldn't just be they didn't want a convicted criminal at the club. Would love to know how any patron can promote the club in the community in a positive manner when we chose to have said criminal at our club.

Don't really want to get into a Ched debate but if an artist is going on tour they have interviews to publicise that tour.

If said artist is a known Blade and the club is involved in some national controversy then a journalist wouldn't be doing their job if they didn't ask about it. Saying 'no comment' just opens you up to speculation. It isn't really an option.

To accuse Heaton of using the issue to sell tickets, without any actual evidence, is taking cynicism to a very crass level, IMHO.

The idea that Paul Heaton needs a grubby 3rd Division striker to publicise his career is laughable.
