I think some of the blades mad contributors have switched to s24 as the medium there has become more
Balanced in recent weeks we are now getting some real vitriol on this site.Talk about blasting the club and
giving Adkins stick at this stage is out of order in my opinion. We have got a history of missing our loan targets (and has I have stated before if clough had got his targets over the line we would be in the championship now) but we have enough squad fillers and getting quality to drop into this division is not easy Hammond for one is probably on 20k + a week plus and to throw away a lot of money at age 32 would
be fool hardy ,he obviously wants to come but negotiations between Leicester his agent and United will be very difficult and to criticise mal brannigan without knowing what's happening is dam right wrong,he will have a budget as an employee and has to stick within that.
Adkins inherited a large squad with a number of key players out with injuries or on there way back in rehabilitation his room for monoever in the market will have been limited due to that. The way some fans are reacting is ridiculous, anybody would think we were in the bottom 4 ,top 6 maybe is not good enough
and Adkins has said as much.He said when he took over everyone would get there chance that is the right way to do things there are one or two still waiting in the wings for an opportunity but I would think he will
have a good idea who he is going to use (the rest are still our players and on the payroll and getting them out on loan depends on other clubs wanting them) I keep preaching that word patience but what's the alternative? We all agreed Adkins is the right man for the job but he can't work miracles with this squad,
he is developing it as best he can changing to a more attacking policy with a set of players put together by clough to be more patient in the way they as a team went about things not easy to change the mindset without the additions he needs.
As for the club not giving him the funds required ,taking the job he would know where he stood (said as much at the fans forum if you were there?) I think we all know that hammond and burn are two players he
wants and if it is not possible he will move on to other targets (I think both deals are far from dead) getting good players to drop down to this level as I have stated is not easy and you can't keep throwing silly money
at it you get the wrong players that way.,We all can name some of them.Adkins is charged with finding hungry players who will drop down to our level, hammond and burn are two he has identified I wish him the best of luck .Hammond although 32 will give us something we need a "leader" burn is a young player out of
contract in the summer and hunger to prove himself,:: bring em on !!!

It's out of order to criticise the club on a fans' forum?

Jesus, after five years in the third division I thought that might just be legal by now.

There are people who have pretty much stopped posting on here because of the recent stream of bile that comes with every single event. What used to form constructive debate appears to now be a thing of the past. You can put it down to whatever you want and perhaps like those before it the asylum always gets taken over by the lunatics and those former constructive posters just stop posting. Be sad if this place with all the efforts put in by those who run it (who oddly enough are about the most positive and constructive posters here) went the way of previous forums where people didn't bother posting because what generally follows is a tirade of thoughtless crap posted apparently by someone who either is or has the mentality of a 12 year old.

I know, god forbid someone strived to make things better rather than just decent into the gutter like society appears to want to do, but that is genuinely how I feel about recent events here. Examples are such as not winning away at top of the league. The spoiled brat rantings because we didn't sign all and everyone they wanted either on loan or for a fee.

I'm with finlaytheblade - I'm struggling to see the fire.

We are in the top 6 after 10 games. I would be extremely surprised if any of the 5 teams above us currently finish above us in May. They won't last the pace.
Haven't we said that the last 5 years or so?

Not sure where anyone has said there is a 'fire' but having sacked a manager that got us to 6th place last season we've got one that's apparently better and is working together #bettertogether or whatever and as it stands were not smashing the league to bits, were 6th.

Where we end up nobody knows, we can only make an assessment now and so far we can all see that performances and results haven't improved dramatically. Sure we've bought a new striker and banged some goals in, but were conceding a lot as well... And wasn't that our major concern all last season?

Didn't really get the point finlaytheblade was making except new forum members are shit at banter as they criticise the team and Adkins. Adkins is not immune from criticism.

Plenty of time to fix things but a play off gamble would not be progress this year. No matter how Phipps dresses it all up

Objection your honour.

Gross misuse of the term "banter".

"Syrian troops today were involved in heavy banter with ISIS on the outskirts of Damascus"

Haven't we said that the last 5 years or so?

Yep. This is the year though.

My fire comment is in regards to the amount of panic that seems to have set in with fans already.

On Tuesday night for example, people were grumbling in the stand that Gillingham were "freescoring" as they had scored 4 (ended up at 5). "Why can't we do that?" someone said... On Tuesday, we were joint top scorers in the league going into the game. "Freescoring Gillingham" were 2 goals behind us. Billy Sharp is also joint top scorer in the league on 6. We're moving along quite nicely.

The worrying thing for me is the Goals Against column. 14 goals in 10 isn't a Chamionship winning return (unless you're Real Madrid who insist on scoring more than the opposition, whatever the amount).

However... To analyse that column a bit further - of the 14 goals conceded, 10 were conceded in our 3 defeats: 4-0 (Gills), 1-3 (Bury) and 2-3 (U's). As well as Wallace and Freeman are playing, we have Brayford and Harris to come back in. These have to be our first choice fullbacks. Once the defence is tightened up a very sensible bet will be 2-0 SUFC. I think LB will be fought out by Harris, Freeman, McEverley and Wallace. Brayford, if fully recovered will walk back into the RB slot.

You could say i'm stupid but i'm v.confident this season.

Just been to supermarket. Used a euro in the trolley. Didn't return trolley afterwards left it in car park. Spotted by youth who waited till I'd gone before seizing trolley and heading off with a spring in his step to collect a free pound coin. I'm having bantz.

Theres a great point here. Some people have thrown all sorts of abuse and quite frankly shit at the previous manager. He did it a different way but to be fair to him and on reflection it doesn't look as if he was actually doing that bad a job. Adkins has come in and some appear to think he just flicks a switch and it all goes swimmingly. The older I get the more I realise that good things don't just happen to us (they happen to other people!!!). Anything worth building happens over time. Clough didn't get enough time in my estimation and there isn't a day goes by with Adkins in charge that changes my mind. He is a better manager hence we have probably done the right thing to get a quicker fix but theres also the fact that we have to tear it all down and start again, which takes more time.

People threw shit at Wilson before but getting rid of him didn't improve our position either did it? What is the message here? Once more good things take time and tearing it all down doesn't always work.

The OP may be clumsy but the point is good enough. Adkins has hardly been in charge 3 months but the clouds are gathering. They are darker and blacker than before and at this rate come Christmas you feel there will be mass outrage if we aren't top. Some of the comments following the Burton result are plain laughable.

Bladesway, you are overstepping the banter mark here chap. Surely you can't have well thought out reasoned arguments and call it banter? You need to interject some completely mythical facts and fugues and a good dose of bile and then you have banter. Come on mate get with the trend of modern threads.

NO.

the word ' banter ', generally means well intentioned, playful joking and interplay between friends or at least people, friends or strangers who are having fun with each other.

It was misused by some footballer or other a few months ago to make light of and excuse some foul mouthed abuse that had been caught on camera, I've a feeling it may have been Terry's racist black c**t tirade at Anton Ferdinand.

Because he used it in his defence doesn't mean that the word has changed its meaning, its not as if Terry is Shakespearean in his use of English is it?

from the first online dictionary that pops up;

banter
ˈbantə/
noun

  1. 1.
the playful and friendly exchange of teasing remarks.
    "there was much good-natured banter"
synonyms: repartee, raillery, ripostes, sallies, swordplay, quips, wisecracks, crosstalk, wordplay; More
    verb
  1. 1.
exchange remarks in a good-humoured teasing way.
"the men bantered with the waitresses"
synonyms: joke, jest, pun, sally, quip; More

    Mean, nasty personal insults are not banter;

at least not in any other sphere than among footballer supporters who base their interpretation and use of our language on the self-serving utterings of nasty footballers.

If people have stopped posting because they can't handle either robust criticism or childish behaviour it's a bit sad but also a bit pathetic imo.

I have a couple of rules that I find help me deal with unwanted arseholery.

If someone replies with a sensible and rationale point, I'll either debate it with them, or actually concede they may have a point, that they may have seen something I haven't.

If someone replies with non-sensical crap, or stuff that's poorly written, strewn with grammatical errors and typos and lacking in paragraphs. I just ignore them, I can't be arsed to try to read it if they can't be arsed to write it properly.

It's not my job to be the guardian of the club's reputation. I have no need to respond to every criticism of the club, however ridiculous, in fact the more ridiculous the post, the less likely I am to respond. There's little to be gained from engaging with idiots. You're just giving them the chance to repeat their nonsense. It's pretty apparent who are attention seekers on here, just as it is on most forums so don't give them the attention they crave.
Ignore them, they're pricks and ultimately, this is just a message board.

Agree that the word “banter” is being misused here.

I’ve not been on this particular forum very long but surely on all forums and in all walks of life, there will always be perennially negative figures as well as uber positive ones. The realistic picture usually lays somewhere in between those perspectives.

From what I can tell, barny, pomppey, metal etc seem to be the glass half empty ones whilst WHF and blade too long seem very positive (blade too long in particular seems like he is about to burst into tears and launches into nonsensical ramblings when even constructive criticism is expressed, WHF is more measured). I think any collective is always going to have people at opposite ends of the range of opinion and will have plenty who fall in between.

Now, I don’t think anyone is going to be 100% happy given the length of time for which our club has been badly underachieving. At the same time, we don’t need to reach for the razor blades after a 0-0 draw away to the current league leaders (regardless of whether they’ll finish, they are doing well right now). We’re not where we need to be yet but we’re not a million miles away. Improvements are still required. The club continue to frustrate on the transfer front but we have a manager who plays positive attacking football which has been better to watch. We also have some decent players coming back into contention. We seem to have eased McEveley out of the team, learnt from the mistake of starting with Long and Billy Sharp has hit form.

Reasons for optimism but we still need to improve if we want to avoid the lottery of the playoffs again.

Once you let stuff you read on an internet forum bother you, you should stop.

I think the different views people have, on opposite ends of the spectrum are interesting, and it's not hard to put yourself in their mindset and understand where they're coming from (most of the time anyway).

If someone is properly pissed off with the club because of our lack of signings, fair enough, I can see why.

If someone is thankful for our position, and thinks that we've made a decent start to the season, I can see that too.

If someone wants Adkins out (I don't think anyone's said this) then I'll give them my view as to why I think they're being silly, and nothing more.

Simmer down, read the forum, express your views, have arguments with people you disagree with, but don't let anything really get to you.
