Great goal from Billy latching onto a terrible back pass from coppinger and taking it round the keeper to score in an empty net he wont get an easier chance than that but glad he's continuing to score and show teams that making those terrible passes near him is dangerous

He should pay a big tribute to Ryan Flynn, who's persistence caused the error.

Flynny had a hand in the first too and, while he may not have the trickery or acceleration of JCR, he is about ten times more effective for the team. Allows his full back into the game more in an attacking sense too.

He's one of the only players we have with the composure to finish that and punish their mistake.

Passing back to the keeper is generally a poor decision, as Donny found out yesterday.
The goalkeeper should only be the last option, they are not outfield players and should not be under any pressure from his own team.

...Billy did well to read the situation early and get there before the keeper, players pass back to the keeper all the time, from the Prem to Sunday league, normally without being punished...

Maybe so but that doesn't mean its the right thing to do, players under pressure should just be booting the ball clear even if its out of play, but I guess this "possession football" everyone is determined to play frowns upon the safe play.
Its a risk passing it back to the goalkeeper there is a reason why attackers chase down the ball to the keeper, as they are more likely to make a mistake.

True but in the PL it's rarely from where he passed it from and it's usually a better pass. The pass itself was Sunday League. I'd be embarrassed if I'd done that (back in the days I could run for more than thirty seconds).

This depends entirely on the situation. In the modern game the keeper is an outlet the same way hoofing it aimlessly up the pitch was an outlet in the Jurassic era. :-)

Needlessly conceding possession is not safe. It's daft.

When I played in goal as a kid, I would always make myself available to my defence. One guy tried to turn instead of passing back to me and got tackled so I refused to save the resulting 1 on 1! (It was in training, not a match unfortunately!)

It won't be "needlessly" losing possession if it takes pressure off the defense so they can reorganise. Its never daft to play on the safe side.

But passing it to the keeper also releases the pressure - on the team if not on the fans - and it retains possession.

Occasionally it goes wrong but the percentages favour keeping the ball.

I wonder if any teams clear their lines as a matter.of course any more.

Keepers. A breed apart.

I really like the "unfortunately" at the end of that post. :-)

I had a dream similar to it. Apart from we were playing the pigs. I rounded the keeper. Trapped the ball on the goal line. Waved to the crowd. Took a bow. Then slotted it in!!!

There is such benefit in having a keeper who can "play a bit" and the times are changing in that keepers are increasingly used (but it's not a ploy when your keepers kicks generally end in row F of the John Street stand). In junior football, at 7 aside, the usefulness of a "sweeper-keeper" is tremendous and also encourages a more rounded player as the better ones develop. Not that suits the gerrit forward brigade.
