Central Midfield without a doubt. He's got the legs when match fit, just like anyone else. He'll be at the heart of midfield with Dean Hammond before very long. Proper footballers. Excellent. We're getting somewhere, especially when Done and The Beard return.

Throw Kennavaro into the mix too and things look even better.

I thought he looked exactly the same as last season :)

Lots of real quality. Me and WHF Jr Sr really enjoy watching him play.

On the downside he really struggles for pace.

The Pace issue is what worries me and looking at the Pinchy, Harry spat for what it's worth I don't think match fitness Was the issue last season, the lack of pace is down to the injury, he's probably lost a yard permanently.

Yes, the more the merrier. He's not good enough or big enough to be a first team centre-back but perhaps he could convert to left-back? In any event, he's a trier and battler so, if fit, will be useful cover. One of our first-choice centre-backs has yet to join the club...

I've just told you it is. Check your facts and start listening and learning from people who know what they are talking about.

So you've told me it is? Ok then, that he was named in the Derby match day squad in October 2014 doesn't matter, you've already told me. Fine.

There's no spat mate. One of us is trying to educate the other. Paul Coutts was not fully match fit at any point last season, much like, sadly, James Wallace. On numerous occasions, throughout the season he was missing from first the Derby squad and subsequently ours, through injuries that prevented his involvement in any way. When he recovered he did not reach full match fitness before the injury recurred or he got another one. That's the plain, simple truth. Our fellow correspondent is talking bollocks.

You are talking gibberish. Check his week by week involvement at both Derby and with us. Why do you have such an irrational dislike for a good player that you simply fabricate a case that holds no water? How very odd.

???

I already said he played well today FFS. I am trying to point out that before we Lord him as the second coming let's see how he goes over the next month or so, my point is he was poor last season and I don't agree it was down to match fitness.. You disagree.. Let's revisit it in a month and see who's right, and seeing as I want SUFC to move forward I sicerely hope it's you.

Coutts showed today that he's got real quality if you can get him in space, especially for Sammon's goal, however I'm not sure that today answered any questions about his mobility due to the way the game played out and his role on the right flank. It's a positive to have that quality option , get Done back and the bench is going to look very strong

looks like a spat to the rest of us pinchy.

Do we get to stand around shouting "SCRAP, SCRAP, SCRAP", until the teachers come and break it up.

Good to see Reedy come on to add a bit of sharpness to the centre midfield for the last half hour, I thought he played some excellent stuff as well with the forwards. Starting to adapt to this level I'd say.

Agreed to me match fitness is a.combination of speed of thought and lasting 90 competitive minutes.

The way he moved to the ball for the cross was almost painful to watch, but he did get there.

I can't see him getting any quicker no matter how many games he plays.

How many League games will Coutts start in central midfield this season?

Playing in training or U21 matches , is no where near the same as a full blown first team match . To me its more important that the bloke gets through a game unscathed , with the physical effort and challenges . Match fitness will come in time ,( if he can keep match fit) . My view is Adkins will use him sparingly , and today was a calculated risk , which paid off , as he must be moving up the pecking list , and impressing Adkins , with his dedication , fitness , and commitment.

Uncharacteristically modest :)

Give us a number.

I can't Fatty. He is just back from injury. Who knows if he will have a recurrence. Match fit and at his best he's first choice for me, at least for the next few days, until.....then he'll be second choice. If you're tempting me to say he's better than Reed than I'm only too happy to do so. Am I seeing more to this than I should??

I wanted a quantity. Specificity. Exactitude. Boldness.

I think his relative lack of mobility is permanent and I can't see him playing CM. Thinking about it though is he any less mobile than Baxter?

Adkins played him for his football brain not his football mobility .

I think the Baxter question is interesting. They are quite alike aren't they, neither are that mobile but they both see passing opportunities early. For me Coutts is a better option when fully fit and I wouldn't have both in the starting 11 given a fully fit squad, good to have more options available

He is a better footballer than Baxter ,doesn't rely on luck and gets his head up. He can also run with the ball. He looked pretty mobile to me when he and Alcock ran through the left side of their defence for the umpteenth time in the first half.

Bit surprised Adkins chucked him in after one U21 game but fully justified. There is a footballer in Coutts, can he now do it consistently for us ? Big bonus if he can.

He was injured in an early cup match having missed nearly the whole of the last season. He got back in the squad around November but had further niggles and didn't play. There is no way he was anywhere near match fit when he joined us.

Good sentiment at the end but I disagree he was poorlast season. He had some shockers early on (not helped by Clough not easing him in) but lots could see he was a good footballer who was rusty.

Latter part of the season he improved greatly, was fantastic at Barnsley and v Donny, created chances and goals at Oldham and was the best player on the pitch at Swindon. I am very glad he is back.

As others have said he's a quality footballer.
He also adds a bit more height to the team which is a bonus

Coutts looked excellent first half today - perhaps more like the player we were to have supposed to have signed!

I know a Derby fan who said Coutts would be terrific at this level (I've regularly corrected him!), but obviously injuries have hindered him. Very good yesterday, though.

I'm wondering if we're beginning to see NA gradually impose himself on the team. Yesterday, we were terrific - not a single player could be singled out as 'poor'. There was more attacking intent than half-a-dozen Clough home (League) games and maybe - just maybe - we're beginning to see players relieved from the dead hand of Clough. Throw in players returning from injury (Done was in the squad yesterday) and it's beginning to look promising.

Yes, great to hear Done on his way back. Great signing by Nigel Clough.

Courts looked good today for me, but someone always has to come on here to slate him. Could be the link we need in midfield, but still only early days to know for sure. Hope he gets a run without injury.
It was me for most of last season as I saw very little to suggest he was a football player. On saying that, however, I'm pleased that he sounds to have done well v Donny. Maybe NA can get the best from him? I'm back for Saturday so will see for myself. Fingers crossed.

I wouldn't agree its a "second coming". His quality was there to see in flashes last season. You could see he was seeing passes that our other players failed to read. Similar in ways to Baxter, he gets slated for misplaced balls when a lot of the time, its a clever ball that the other player fails to see/run onto.

Back to Coutts, the Swindon 5-5 game should've proved that there was a player in there.
