Since we last won a trophy in 1925 Newcastle have won the FA Cup 4 times and the Fairs Cup (precursor of the UEFA Cup once). They have also been league runners up twice, FA Cup runners up once and League Cup runners up once. They have also played in the Champions League. In that period we managed to lose the FA Cup final in 1936.

As has been said. No contest.

I think comparatively if you factor in that they get twice the crowds we do , spend ( or have spent ) eye watering amounts of money to maintain their status as great under achievers and the fact they are the most obvious example of a football club being run as a business then , yeah its still us

I think you can measure under achievement by level of support contrasted with success.

Last season United were the 27th best supported team in the country. All the teams above them have won trophies since 1925 with the exception of Palace, Hull and Brighton*. However all 3 of those have got to a cup final since we last did so in 1936. Reading (in position 33) are the highest club not to have won a trophy or been to a cup final since 1936, but given that their relative success is a thing of the last 15 years, I think we can discount them. You then have to go down to Bristol City in position 43 and then Brentford in 45 and Bournemouth in 46.

There really is no contest.

*Of course, current attendance rankings are a bit artificial. I have no doubt if they were competing at the same level United would have bigger crowds than Palace, Hull and Brighton.

You missed their last league title which came just after our 1925 cup win, in 1927.

Quick trivia question.

Only one third tier team in the whole of Europe has higher attendances than United, Name them.

The main issue here is that Newcastle deserve it, we don't, or then again..............

Don't know, if you factor other things in other than league position they could have a claim, I give you Steve Mcclaren
Ill raise you one McClaren and their Chairman for a Kevin McCabe, top trump that then?

I wouldn't be so sure about us getting bigger crowds than Brighton.
There last three average attendances in the second tier have been 25645, 27283 and 26236. Ours were 20623, 25120 and 26023.
People still think of them as they were in their Goldstone Ground days but they're a biggish club now.

Dynamo Dresden - now they are definitely bigger underachievers than us (since the reunification of Germany at least).

Probably we'd both be getting about 25.000ish if we were towards the top of the second tier.

Except they actually got 26,000ish and 27,000ish when they were towards the top of the second tie.
They got 25,500ish when they were near the bottom.

Myself, I think that the best thing is to direct everybody to the thought that the City of Sheffield is the most under represented conglomeration in the whole of the British football system.:tumbleweed:

United aren't big enough to worry the statisticians whilst Wednesday have more support potential but continually waste opportunities...although with their spending power they should push on quicker than us.

Aside from the obvious anguish of the twats beating them, I did take some comfort from BBC radio after the final score when the incredulity that a team like the pigs had beaten them (from at least two of the pundits and even before they'd realised it was a virtual reserve side) made me laugh.
How low has the esteem of the pork fallen in media circles?

One of the things I found most pleasing during our cup exploits, which actually seemed to annoy some on here, is that it was seen as not that big a shock that a team like us would be giant killing.

Underachievers we are here wo oh
Underachievers we are here wo oh
Underachievers we are here
We haven't won ought in many a year
Wo oh oh wo oh wo oh

I don't see how you can compare the 2 clubs? We are in league one and they are in the premier league, for a league one club we have achieved quite a lot let's be honest. FA cup semi finalists for a league one club is a big achievement, league cup semi finalists for a league one club is a big achievement, getting 20,000+ fans for home games for a league one club is a big achievement. Newcastle haven't managed this but they do get 50,000 plus fans for home games therefore nearly fill there stadium every other week, they should be achieving better than they do let's be fair.

Why do people believe like the board believe that we are a big club? We are spending our 5th season in league one let's remember what we are now and that there isn't much to achieve.

One of my mates is a Toon supporter and he has been trotting the same line for years. Whenever I challenge his theory he says " ah well, it's all about achievements relative to expectations" and I remind him we are a big club too and he never really acknowledges that, so we move onto the next drink and talk about something else. It's one of his party lines though and always gets him loads of laughs at dinner parties etc. but on such nights I give him the floor, truthfully which mixed company wants to know about the Blades at a dinner party? and yet all my pal's stories about the Toon are very funny. Ours aren't, are they?! I don't find it at all funny :( and then there are often those self-appointed smug Mancs fans sat round the table.... I hate dinner parties.

Its the morning after shame they are feeling after losing to that bag of shite last night. :D
It was a smash-n-grab by SWFC.
Here's one of their massive fans ganning along the Scotswood Road after the game...
