Article on BBC Sport where Gary Caldwell has said that maybe their chairman should not have said that they were going to smash League 1 to pieces and get 100 points.

He follows it up by saying that Wigan are the team that everyone wants to beat in League 1 and it is everyone's big game of the season.

I would suggest that playing in front of 20,000 fans at the oldest football stadium in the world against the bookies favourites for the title would be the biggest game of the season, but what do I know!

They really need to stop giving interviews and making themselves sound ridiculous. Wigan have re-found their level I'm afraid. We now need to go and find ours once more.

Discuss.

They are certainly not the biggest club but recent successes like winning the FA cup and playing in Europe might make them more glamorous in the eyes of some fans. Especially the younger ones. They also have probably the biggest budget.

I think most fans of other league 1 clubs see us and Wigan as the biggest, probably followed by Bradford and Coventry and then maybe the dingles.

I very rarely post on our message boards. I'm more of a reader than a writer, but it has taken two posts for someone to tell me to shut up.

It is my opinion that each team has a level within which they generally perform, some fluctuate up and down more than others and have periods of success, however it generally doesn't last e.g Wigan & Blackpool.

If you don't agree with me that's fine, but please be polite about it.

On this particular thread I think your wish is one that should have been adhered to. Telling you to shut up was silly, but there you go, some folks just can't help shooting from the hip. Don't take it personally, it's not worth the effort.

I doubt many see Wigan as their biggest game of the season, maybe their local rivals. A good indication would be the highest gate of the season for each club to see what the fans think.
Agree with the OP as regards clubs and their level. I see ours as the top flight and have always thought Wigan as lower league.
However I do think people perceive a clubs level as at the level they were when growing up. For me United were top flight and Wigan were lowere lower league.
In the same way I always think of Watford as a lower league club for example and such as Wolves top flight.

A bit of banter is one thing, but some people tpe quicker than they think. I'm a bit old fashioned and think good manners have a place, including on a forum. It can all be made good with a ;) after the sentence.

The best advice throughout the treads...

The bunch of illiterate bastards... ;)

So, you're allowed to be critical about someone else making statements, but people have to be respectful about yours? I don't agree with you about clubs 'having their level', and the evidence doesn't back that up; if it did, there'd be no point in following football. You can say that teams like Wigan and Hull have 'had' their moments and their success doesn't last, but it's harder to pigeonhole a team like Blackpool. They've had good (long) periods of success in the past, but don't seem to have had much (apart from the odd season) in the last 50 years. Where is 'their level'? I seem to remember that SUFC's average league position throughout our history is 22 or 23, so that would put us somewhere near the top end of the Championship. Does that mean that we shouldn't aspire to hold a place in the top-flight?

Wigan :D:D

Those "smash the league" & "we'll get 100 points" comments now are already like a right millstone round their necks! Can't wriggle out now Gary!

Bit of a misunderstanding (& disrespect for?) division three too with one or two of those comments there: Port Vale fans aren't up for it when you go to Vale Park because Wigan is somehow "their big game of the season". They're up for it because they're passionate fans.

Delusions of grandeur from Gaz there, along with veiled excuses, & a realisation they dropped a helluva bollock with their arrogant comments in pre-season. Silly chuffs!

Certain chairman do not engage there mouth with there brain. Glad its never happened to us.

Opposition teams playing in front of 20,000 fans , at the oldest football stadium , means everyone wants to beat SUFC , just because the rest of the league do think we are Billy Big Bollocks . Most teams and managers of the opposition, would i have thought , think they have a better chance of beating the blades away , than beating Wigan away.

BDTBL can be a albatross around our necks , not a advantage.

Little or big club definition is irrelevant , as finding your level.

A little sea side club was going bust in 2008 , who now grace the premiership.

Ours is league 1 and so it is for Wigan .

Well for me being 21, in living memory I've only seen us in the top flight once. Ive seen Wigan up there for much longer, I've seen them win a major trophy and I've seen them play in Europe.

We have more fans and a bigger stadium. Fucking awesome, take that any day.

"Sharpe, 23, is the youngest chairman in the Football League and in pre-season said he wanted to 'smash' League One as well as reaching triple points."

I'd like to 'smash' Katy Perry, let's see who gets lucky first.......

Said the same about Liz Hurley many years ago . Only thing i smahed was some plates in a greek restaurant .

There you go.

Wigan IMO will struggle , like we have . This league does for the so called big boys , takes some time adjust to , and tradition / history means nothing.

This has to be the season for us , we will not get a better chance.

I'm still hopeful. Liz will be hanging in a few years time and grateful for a well preserved chap like myself. It's the only reason I eat salads.

Not sure how long you have followed football for but we aren't bigger than Barnsley and most definitely Coventry. I'd have Sheffield United, Coventry, Wigan, Barnsley, Millwall and possibly even Swindon above us. Have never been a big club in my lifetime, just a typical League 1 club.

We get 18,000 at home, granted, but not many of them make any effort to go away games. I preffered it when we got 8,000 at home, our normal support and so do many others.

Think it's fair to say that smaller clubs don't come to the Lane any more with any sort of feeling of intimidation. Yeovil, Crewe, Colchester, Fleetwood, Bury - they've all won here in the league the last 2 or 3 seasons.

Fortress Bramall Lane is officially a thing of the past.
Wigan's stadium (whatever corporate name it's called these days) no doubt is more intimidating than the Lane.
