FFS - WHO ARE SWINDON????

It's not Real Madrid, It's not even Ipswich, top of the division above us.

It's SWINDON - and they are below us.

Cheer up FFS.

Totally agree!
I live in Leicester and mates at work who follow the Foxes ask me who the Blades are playing next. I told them Swindon, and they mockingly say "Who?". Can you blame them?!

This Byrne guy must be amazing.

Never in the history of football has one man put so much fear into the hearts of so many.

We're doomed I tell ya, we're doomed.

Byrne is the reason Swindon are top of the league and won all their games by 5 goals this season with him setting up 10 and scoring the other 10 himself.

Yeah yeah, on the other hand he tore us a new one twice in quick succession last season facing a far better Left Back in Harris than he'll be up against on Saturday! If he plays on the right, of course.

His performance in the first leg at the Lane was the best attacking performance I saw all last season.

Shhhhh. Don't say that. He's not even good!
Callum will have him in the bag, don't worry.

I'd be just as worried with McFadzean at the back against Bury or Fleetwood. He simply cannot defend.

We need to rush any defensive signings through.
We can cope in centre mid as long as Wallace is wrapped in cotton wool, but we can't cope in defence. Alcock playing would terrify me too.

Don't me wrong, I'm not saying for sure that he'll have a stormer. But we're right to be a little concerned given what he did to Harris.

And whether it's McFadzean or Alcock, we're sending out half the defender Harris.

Reinforcements are a must.

Your right Fulwood but obviously based on the amount of goals they have put past us of late, and the fact that Byrne always seems to lead us a merry dance. Not helped by the fact that the only two first teamers who started last night both got themselves suspended.

I really hope we bring in another good centre half before Saturday but if we don’t and assuming Collins is not fit and Wallace isn’t up to playing Tuesday/Saturday, I’d go with

--------------------Howard
Freeman-----Edgar---McEveley—Alcock
JCR--------Basham----Reed------Adams
---------------Sharp---Sammon

I can’t see McFadzean playing there anyway.

People are right to highlight Byrne as a threat as he’s one of the division’s better players. My other concern is that whoever plays out of Obika and Smith would hammer Jay-Mac either for pace or in the air (having a CB who is slow and poor in the air is a real bind). That’s another reason I’d like a new CB in there. Robert also seems to be scoring a few so they will cause us plenty of problems.

The only way I can see us combatting that is going hell for leather to try to play on the front foot and make them worry about us. Adams, Sharp, Sammon and JCR will need to be on form for us to hope to outscore them because we won’t keep a clean sheet.

A big factor was our tactics in that performance to be fair. We defended so narrow that we gifted him the space and allowed him to get a run at Harris. Get touch tight and he'll not get past half as many times. He's a good player but to see people (I know you haven't) saying that we might aswell not turn up is laughable.

We might be in for another 5-5 though :D

True enough, I think I mentioned at the time that he was given the freedom of Sheffield to rove down the right flank. That, coupled with Howard's complete inability to deal with anything from distance at the time, made Byrne's goal inevitable.

That'll be the side that thoroughly humiliated us at their place last season.

Another tonking, on top of the Gillingham 4-nowt, & the precarious foundations of positivity that have been building will take a right battering.

We've got money, surely work's being going on on behind the scenes, the transfer deadline's in sight - why not strengthen defensively now, before Swindon?
Seems a no-brainer to me.

Pro-active not reactive.

Thats not how this club works.

This. He had so much space it was painful to watch. Harris and Murphy both had terrible games.

I thought Harris had done a good job on him until he conceded the pen. Then he got booked and it all changed from there.

Murphy caused Thompson all manner of problems in the first half but faded in the second. He also didn't Help Harris out much defensively.

Agreed. Harris always was isolated, Murphy couldn't track back. Che already works back more than Murphy did.
But I'd start Woolford, sounds like he played well yesterday and he will definitely help the left back out.

By the sounds of it Swindon are starting an auction so Byrne might not even play againt us yet...

So come on then, who is this magical defender you all want us to sign before Saturday to negate the influence of superman?

It's not so much to negate the influence of superman. Byrne is probably their most threatening player but Obika, Smith and Robert are also dangerous. Our defence is our weakest part of our team and before last night, most of us wanted another centre half. That remains the case. I expect McEveley or Alcock will play let back.

That's not our job is it? They get paid handsomely.

They could've got someone in well before now. McFadzean shouldn't even be our third choice.

Reed over Wallace? Not for me.

Maybe so but Swindon have lost matches with Byrne in their team. We will get fucked over by most wingers if we give anyone as much time on the ball as Whispering Bob did with Byrne in the play-offs.

On his day Murphy is an attacking threat until some teams decide to stick two players on him. Put 2 players on Byrne or stick a 2 footed challenge on him.

Not sure you can get away with two footed tackles anymore, not even in L1 but yeah, double up and make it physical. Knock him around and make sure someone in the tunnel shits him up a bit before kick off.
If he's still there.

yes, I appreciate some are nervous.

We could do a few things - Alcock to right (he now has 90 minutes at Fulham), Freeman left, Edgar and McE in the middle. There is also Collins, as he may be fit.
CM will probably be Bash and Wallace or odd chance it will be Reed who played well at Fulham. It's not as if we don't have options - we do, and we have 3 days to practice in a given formation.

Now that defence is not the best, but is still not - considering.

All it takes is just 90 minutes of Geoff Boycott type concentration.

We really have to start letting other teams think "fook in ell, it's Sheff U on Saturday - that will be a tough one"

We really should not be worried about Swindon - we show them respect - but enforce our game on them.

Indeed. One of my issues with Clough was how he built up some of the opposition - in effect preparing us for a fall.

Totally wrong and it is one of the good things about Adkins - he is positive and it must have an effect on the team.

We take our game to Swindon........simple as. If it's not good enough, so be it.

As for Byrne - FFS - teams have double up on Murphy for the past 2 seasons.......just do the same and nullify the threat. All it means, for one game is working a tad harder.

Thats not how this club works.

Buying a defender before Satdi to cope with the imagined threat of a Division 3 player who had a good five minutes against us once when he was given the freedom of the pitch would be the epitome of reactive.

I hope the management team are working behind the scenes to buy/loan players who in the long term will give us the best chance of promotion, not panic buying someone for an inflated fee to deal with an illusory one-game 'threat'.

I get the impression that Flynn is reaching an acceptable level of fitness. Why not have him at RB until Brayford is back and put Freeman at LB? Both did very accomplished jobs there last season. Flynns tenacity really serves him well at RB and he gets space to run into which he likes.

Ah. The imaginary threat of the best right winger in the league. Subject of several imaginary bids from championship teams right now. Ah. Imaginary. Okay.

Nurse.

Lets not forget that Swindons defence at times , has appeared worst that ours . Could be a high scoring attacking attractive game . I have no worries about Swindon , and neither will Adkins . Repect , and good preperation is the order of the day , but let them worry about us . We have now goal scorers all over the pitch.

As you say , double up on Byrne and let him know you are there , and he is in a game.

Looking forward to a away win .
