Tuesday will be the 12th meeting between the two clubs with Sheffield United leading the head to head 7-2 with two draws.

The first meeting between the two sides was at Peterborough in the FA Cup on 27 Jan 1962. SUFC won that game 3-1.

Of all the games between the teams, only twice has one been won by a difference of over 2 goals, both won 4-0 by SUFC in the 4th Division (1981/82 season).

The Blades are unbeaten in the previous two meetings at London Road, drawing 0-0 in Oct 2013 and winning 2-1 almost exactly twelve months ago on the 19 Aug 2014. Goals from Jose Baxter (25) and Ben Davies (84) giving SUFC the 3pts infront of 6,578 fans.



At London Road our record is W-3, L-1, D-2. The defeat coming on 9 March 2010. Our back team that night was:
Bunn
Nosworthy - Bartley - Morgan - Stewart
Ward - Montgomery - Harper - Williamson
Evans - Cresswell​

"Famous" Peterborough players that night were: Craig Mackail-Smith, Aaron McClean and Lee Frecklington
 



Last time we played them at BDTBL posh won 2-1, they got 2 very late goals which was a reyt sickener for us.:mad:

With that defence, we deserved to lose.
 
I remember the Division 4 games. Weren't they challenging that season? From memory the second 4-0 was viewed as potentially a difficult game which might've allowed Wigan(?) to close in on us.

Was beginning to think we'd sunk to such a level of mediocrity that we didn't have better head-to-head records over ANY of these div three bastards :mad:

They were indeed challenging and their manager at the time, foolishly said in the local press before the game - "Sheff Utd will spend that much time defending, they won't have time to attack" (Edwards/Morris et al) - think they were 3 nil down in 20 minutes............fucking plonker comes to mind.

Same again tomorrow would be just what the doctor ordered.

Went to that game . Travelling up from London to the match and again will be a challeging game . One thing we have all learnt , fans , players and manager , after the Gillingham game , every fixture will be challenging.

Posh's manager at the time was Peter Morris (who played for Norwich and Ipswich). We beat them 4-0 at the Lane too a few weeks later

For those who don't know...

The Watney Cup was held before the start of the season, and was contested by the teams that had scored the most goals in each of the four divisions of the Football League the previous season who had not been promoted or admitted to one of the European competitions, making eight participants in total.

SUFC participated in the 1970 and 1972 competitions and were runners up in 1972 losing to Bristol Rovers on penalties

It was indeed, and as Silent says, we won 4-0 and I was there too. It was the closest The Blades had ever played to my home town, although subsequently, they played at Cambridge United, which was slightly closer.

In fact, that must be our last semi-final win, but true to form, we lost the final, on penalties as I recall?

We did... 7-6 I think... think Ted Hemsley missed the kick for us...

Although some will say Darlington was the most memorable game of the season to me it was this one. There were still 5 teams pushing for the 4 promotion places and it was, until that night, possible (although unlikely!) we wouldn't go up. Everyone who was there knew we were up at ten past nine (well at ten to eight really).
Buggered them senseless!

TC got sent off by Clive "the book" Thomas for a late tackle on Tommy Robson not long after Ian Mackenzie gave us the lead. We were playing with 10 men for most of the game but we scored a further 3 goals
 
Anybody have a list of say the top ten teams we've played the most in our history?

I know Blackburn is top of that list but I'd be interested to see the rest.

Yeah I remember that night too - massive following down there. Where we'd usually had strict police escorts from train station to straight to the ground at most venues, this was more like a deployment of "direction guides" just pointing us towards the ground.... "That way fellas".... As a result almost everyone on the special vanished off into local pubs (something previously hard to do).

For the first time I heard "god bless you please Ian Porterfield, we all love you more than you will know...oh oh oh...." in one pub and "We love to see United win away.... blades win away, oh blades win away... blades win away, blades win away, blades win away" in best Doris Day style in another....

Cracking atmosphere behind the goal - non-stop singing from the moment the first goal went in... supposedly 6000 went down there that night but i think that's probably a bit over the top.... it was one hell of a night though, and one hell of a performance.

I there at that one. I have never experienced a warm welcome like that for the United fans from a home club either before or since. The police allowed the travelling blades to parade around the pitch perimeter with their special banners for the cup game.There were some amusing ones, one of which had a cartoon painted on it of undertakers carrying a Peterborough coffin to the graveyard. The home fans were amused by them and applauded as they went round.

There was an old chap stood next to us from 20 miles away from Peterborough (no segregation in those days) just to see Joe Shaw play live.

We went through to the next round fairly easily and were applauded off the pitch by both sets of fans. For this reason I promised myself that I would return again.

I'm not sure my son and I will enjoy the hospitality like that tomorrow.

My Uncle Ronnie recalls the 1962 game in his book as my dad took him there. Jimmy Hagan was Posh's manager at the time and after the game my dad had a chance to speak to his hero

Its worth noting that during gravy shortages "mushy peys" is popular as a substitute. For your benefit Pat: "peys" are like peas but not sophisticated enough to go on menus at fancy places like Little Chef.

The Whippet population has been drastically reduced recently by the uptake of those fancy "Lurchers"... bloody poncey things. Tougher, dirtier and a bit dim-witted, but more willing to get a pint of Mild in, I gather, so no surprise they're the beautiful bright young things of the sheep-worrying and rabbit chasing world these days.
