Is it just me that's not bothered about Murphy?

TC was our only midfield ballwinner before we signed Hockey. Alf Ramsey liked him because not that only he had flair but he had aggression too
Whilst accepting WWF's point about reckless tackling not being the crucial factor in whether someone was a hard tackler or not, Currie could be reckless at times, but also his overall body strength and timing (and bravery) meant his tackling was incisive.
However, I do remember him scything into Mike Docherty in the early 70's and putting him out for a season or so. Similarly against Oxford in 68 he tackled big Ron Atkinson and Ron reacted angrily that this young kid had almost cut him in two (this can be seen on the on line recording of this game).

One point on Murphy. His performance vs Spurs in the League Cup semi ranks right in the top drawer of creative exhibitions given by a United midfielder in my years watching (Bassett onwards).

Glynn Hodges, Michael Tonge, Michael Brown, and perhaps Vass Borkbokis. They've all put in similarly classy performances in big games. But how many others have there been?

I'm struggling to put a Whitehouse, Devlin, Ndlovu or a Gillespie performance up there on the basis of flair and match importance.

The player who can glide past players on either side is a rareity over the decades at Bramall Lane. However the key to any player's value is consistency and one goal in 5 in League 1 is not that great. He did add a few assists but not that many.

Adams will be far nore effective playing that same position and why? Because Adams has that bit of self-belief and Murphy didn't appear to know how good he actually was. Unfortunately for us and for the lad, I honestly think Adkins could have injected loads more self-confidence into the lad. We'll never know.

Whitehouse when we smashed the pigs at the sty?

I thought we were lack lustre v Spurs at home for 80 minutes throughout the team

only ches complete lack of fear gave us a chance and Reed had a better game

just a personal view , lifting Murphy up is giving far more status than he deserves

Dont recall seeing TC's tackle on RA in the 1968 match on you tube. Will look again. In the Nov 1970 match as I mentioned earlier, his tackle on Micky Way caused anger again (Way was carried off). My dad told me to watch Oxford's number 11 (Ron Atkinson wasnt well known then!) going after TC by staying close to him and waiting for him to receive the ball. Dont think the lumbering RA was able to be quick enough to get his tackle on TC. In the 2nd half TC opened the scoring with a blistering shot (Tudor and Woody later made it 3-0)

I am bothered because I think Murphy is a decent player and our best. He was not always consistent but he was still a game changer more so than any other player in our squad. He says he wanted to leave to improve his Scotland chances but like I have said elsewhere I don't think his chances have improved much by moving to Brighton.

We just appear to be lucky that Adams has grasped his chance at this moment in time. Murphy will still be another player we look back and regret selling.

matter of opinion I dont think he was our best player , he had improved a lot but wasnt a world beater
if he was a big game player where was he in the play offs

losing our best player Brayford cost us that
Murphy was invisible

you have a very rose tinted view of him now hes gone

Far too weak and too many games passed him by for me. He was great on his day but I don't think you can rely on him to get us out of the league. I would much rather have Adams in that position and if the money is used to strengthen other areas then it's a good deal for the club.

I like posting like this, with such poor understanding of the game of football. your comments had me falling of my chair, oh yes he's been bought by a higher league club who scouts must of missed his all is weak areas and all the games that just passed him by, hey but the heck we will just spend £2millon on him anyway. Did you see our midfield on Saturday and you say hat you don't think Jamie Murphy would get the Blades out of this league, Chris Basham never turned up, Stefan Scougall was out muscled every time and Jose Baxter could not put 3 passes together if he tried all day. For all his faults Jamie Murphy was a far better player than any of the above 3. The Blades sell their top players how long is Adams going to stay? or gets injured We never got promoted last season because one main reason was they sold McGuire to Hull.

Do not forget that 2 million to strengthen any club gets you very little these days. Was it a good deal for the club that sells their best players I guess yes, but was it a good deal for the fans or the changes of the Blades getting promoted, NEVER IN A MONTH OF SUNDAYS.

It's not the sale of Murphy as an individual that bothers me, it's what it says about the board. You don't get promoted selling your better players and Murphy was one of those. Written request or not, he had a contract which we could have enforced. OK there is one school of thought that says if they don't want to pay for us let them go but I don't really go along with that, and a refusal would have sent out the right message to the squad and other clubs.
Finally, what was the fee? Hate this undisclosed nonsense. Who decided to make it undisclosed? Will NA get the all of however much it was to spend on the squad?

Our fans are that used to seeing our best players leave that they somehow try to make out he's now not needed, how bizarre. Murphy will be missed but lets see what we do with the money and how we go on this season to truly say how good the deal has been for us.

I find it quite laughable how these threads appear every year rubbishing the player sold, more often than not we sell to clubs in a higher division are all other clubs scouts thick or something ? There is a reason other clubs want our player and it is because they are good so lets stop this "he was nesh" ................ "only turned up one game in five" crap. Don't forget last season Murphy scored 20% yes 20% of all United goals and that is before we start counting his assists, to me that is a pretty big hole to fill, to cover that we need the rest of the players to do a lot better than last season. Sure it can be done but don't anyone say it makes our task easier it doesn't it makes promotion a little bit harder to achieve.

but its not just about scoring and we didnt score nearly enough , he was suppose to help score supply another 20 to 30 goals , some are trying to say he was our only potent striker which is utter garbage , he played more than most

higdon played half the number of games for example

he was an ok forward he wasnt rubbish but he wasnt irreplaceable

murphy scored 10 in 47 league and cup appearances and is being hailed by some as the best
mcnulty scored more 12
hidon got 5 but in only 20 appearances

goods job we didnt sell mcnulty

If I was a manager looking for a young, eager goal scorer, Mcnulty fits the bill - he could still go before August 31st.
Hope not, but if he is only going to play a bit part with Sharp/Sammon as 1st choice, then that will be noticed by scouts - in the same way we have noticed Edgar.
Hope United aren't tempted to cash in for lets say £500K - that would piss me off.

UTB

Sooner see McNulty go out on loan if anything. Not sure we can afford to lose him anyway if we're playing two up front, until Done is fit again.

Woah. If we're starting with the insults, your understanding of writing in comprehensible sentences had me falling off my chair.

There is always stats to help a argument even if you get them wrong eh. Murphy got 11 league goals and 1 FA cup goal last season playing 99% of the time as a left winger, good stats for a winger lets not compare him to the strikers of the team eh. No need to rubbish the player because he has been sold .................... actually it must be hurting you more than it is me why else would you make out he is crap ?

ooh 11 thats much better
he was , is an average player nothing extraordinary , , yes better than some we had last season , but we move on
players come and players go
Adkins believes hes getting a good squad together and buying Sharp and Connor Sammon more than makes up for the loss of Murphy
suck it up and get behind the lads
