Can we replace him with similar talent like Nathan Byrne and use the excess to sign a solid CB like Connor Goldson? If so, we've played a blinder. If not, we might have to write yet another season off. But don't slag em off till the business is done.

Once he hands in a transfer request there's little the club can do. He wants to play for his country in the euros and Strachan has made it clear he won't be selecting League One players.

I for once don't blame the club. This isn't like with Quinny, Beattie, Maguire etc. It's a good price for a player who wanted to leave to further his international prospects. If we don't replace him by the end of August I'll change my opinion but until then... UTB

If selling Murphy means we bring in Byrne and Goldson we have done terrific business. Byrne tore us a new one in the league and playoff games at BL so he would represent a capable replacement within our budget.

I agree with all this, there's not necessarily anything that could have been done - we're still offering another season of league one football.

It completely hinges on business dealings whether we make this work for us or not but our history in this field isn't particularly good. This is a tidy profit on one player but the vast majority of players we sign don't have the quality to make that difference to the side. Here's hoping a bit more cash will mean we get the best possible.

Fun fact: Adkins splashed £1.2m on Jose Fonte when Southampton were already top of the league.

I know it may be a dream, but it's realistic. No championship sides have snapped them up yet and we just have to convince them both they'll be playing in the championship next year with us. Much like McDonald and Wolves, Bristol and Agard. It's do-able if we have the ambition to do so.

Don't think it'll happen (being innured into thinking good things can't happen with United), but with the money we've received, price-wise it could happen.
It's all a question of if they could be persuaded it's a prime move for them (provided, of course, they're on Nigel's radar in the first place). But theoretically possible, for sure.

Byrne made some strange comments recently about this needing to be a "break-out season" for him & about Swindon being the best 3rd division club to be at to attract attention from the big boys. From that, we know what's motivating him. Could he be convinced his goals are more achievable here short-term than at Swindon?

Well we can only go off what Sela and Jim have said. Murphy's interview makes me think they're right, he talked about the national team and we all know Strachan wouldn't pick a league one player.
