Clough hated everyone remember!
In all seriousness, I don't think Adkins is a yes man as such, but I think the timing is awful. Why couldn't this business be done earlier in the summer if the offers were there?
Adkins doesn't have the bargaining power with the board, yet. In many ways he's still in his probationery period, played two games. Clough would've no doubt built up allies on the board as well as detractors, but he could use the cup record as a little bit of a bargaining tool "look what happens when you back me" and "if we get players of brayfords quality, look at the backing we get"
I'm not sure how much of a say Adkins had in the signing of Billy Sharp, but it looks like a McCabe move, a big name to get bums on seats (see Warnock DVD from 2004/05).
The problem is that we need a side capable of winning games at present we don't have this and we've just lost our main goal scoring and creating asset.
Adkins has other big problems to sort, rightly or wrongly he's only just realising that we need to sort the back four and I suspect that this business has been carried out not behind his back, but whilst he's unaware of the real quality that Murphy possesses and whilst he's focussed on sorting out the defence and central midfield.
We all know that Murphy is a confidence player, so perhaps after last weekend, Murphy was looking for that support or reassurance that he'll be played where he's best.
Either way, the board have signed off on this and got the money in. Right now, Adkins has a weaker squad because of this.
