I am not disagreeing with anyone about the upset it will cause - but, no one knows what the deal is or if a release clause has been triggered.

We have to wait until all the details are out but to rubbish the club now on speculation is a bit premature.

I somehow doubt that our "committed Board" will have the balls to give a full disclosure of the details, given their past track record with negotiations and contracts. They will be fearing for their skins !!

That Tevez board will no doubt be damaged. For the love of god I hope Murphy stays and we win tomorrow. I really want to believe in this board and manager.

I was bitter about previous players leaving, i still am. But if Murphy wants to go fair play to the lad he deserves better than this shite league anyway.

Will miss his dad though.

Isn't it obvious that this is why we signed Woolford? Some even said as much at the time.

Unfortunately Woolford has not really shown much so far, but he seems as frustrated by that as anyone, and several posts have said he's capable of more. Hope he comes good soon.

And nearly all clubs are selling clubs aren't they?

Murphy is not worth more than £2.2m he is replaceable and is far too inconsistent and is often marked out of the game by opposing teams

Correct ...... Murphy is not worth £2.2 million, however, his replacement will also cost a shit load more than he is worth as well so we'll have to pay it !!

Unless, of course, his replacement has already been acquired on a free in which case the supporters have been shafted by the Club ....... again !!! o_O

...the possibilities are mind blowing...

People we writing him off 9 months into his career until someone turned him around. Can we wait 9 months again? I suspect we'll be another manager down and in the same boat again at this time next year if that's how long it takes.

You just know the 2m will be spreadover 10 years, be dependant on Brighton wining the Premier League, Scotland winning the World Cup and Murphy scoring 30 goals a season for the next 5 years.

Expect less than a million up front. An outstanding Always the same.

...for every club. United structure transfer deals in much the same way as everyone else does.

I would sell Murphy for £2m in the blink of an eye but only if Nigel Adkins agreed. If we all think he's an outstanding manager (or did until a defeat sparked the usual absurd tantrums) then we have to go his way.

Surely Ogrady is a part of this deal .
Now that would put a different light on things

There's no standard time, mate. Every individual is different.

Classic Sheffield United.

The pledge, the turn..... The prestige. It's August and we've sold our best player again. We can add Murphy to the list including Maguire, macdonald, the Kyles. The list goes on and on and on.

It's not rocket science that selling your best players makes you worse as a team. Murph could have easily been the difference between auto and the play off or the play offs or lower. It's stunning that time after time the board have failed to see the damage losing your best players does to the chances of success. We all know there is not going to be an exciting replacement waiting in the wings, we've a huge squad.

However, on the flip side. We are fairly well stocked up top. Might be Adams, done are going to have to be key players instead, with back up from jcr, ddg and woolford.

My early summer instinct told me: Sharp and Woolford (journeymen, past their best) in and Murphy (exciting, talented, still improving) out.

Then, when a few weeks passed by and Murphy remained in situ, my fears started to subside and it even crossed my mind that we were serious about building a team fit for promotion. Where are the examples of teams selling their best players and winning promotion? WInning teams keep their best players and shift their under-achievers. To many of us, Jamie Murphy is our best player. He scores goals, he creates goals, he excites the fans...........

My survival technique for following The Blades is to remain irrationally optimistic in the face of all evidence to the contrary. Not sure how I'll deal with this one.

I disagree - Jim P will no doubt tell it as it is - he seems to have a certain rapport with the fans via his twitter feed.

Of course the club could be culpable and I could very well join the attack dogs on the subject - but fans should keep their powder dry until we know what the details are.

He hasn't been sold yet :)

and therein lies the key

I'm not delighted at losing one of our better players but we do have enough options to cover the loss so Mr Adkins have you got a GOOD defender and a GK lined up?

We don't need to replace Murphy but we do need to use the funds well in other areas. If we do that I will consider it good business.

I'll save you the effort in finding out what Jim Phipps has to say. It will something like this

"It is very difficult losing Jamie Murphy as he is one of leading players, but we had no choice due to him getting the chance to better himself. There was nothing we could have done to have kept him, but that is football and Nigel Adkins knows this"

Would you have been happy if Murphy has refused to sign our new contract offer and walked for free?
No, which is why proper clubs tie players to a new contract when they have at least a year left. Then, if contract negotiations break down, they can sell the player. That gives them a stronger bargaining position. Leaving it until the last minute so they can walk away on a free significantly weakens the bargaining position.
This is just fundamental. Liverpool started negotiations with Sterling when he had two years left. That's why they could command such a high fee for him.
Similarly, we should be in a position that if Murphy wants to go, he goes at our price, not what his agent tells us. Like we did with Harry, tbf.

We've tied Murphy down to a contract, so "your" club must be a "proper" club too.

The issue is about what we've had to offer to get him to sign that contract.

How long did he have left on his previous contract?
