We were short of it throughout the team last year, have any of the newcomers addressed it?

Not entirely sure we lacked pace throughout the team last year. Where were we lacking?

I know we were up front but other than that probably just at centre half...

I think we lacked the cutting edge. The final ball and the end product.

We have pace in Murphy, Adams, Done, Scougall and Campbell-Ryce going forward. Alcock, Harris, Brayford, McFadzean and Freeman are all certainly not sluggish at the back either.

As I wrote that I realised that all players listed were here last year.

Yep and Billy isn't know for having pace. Don't know anything about this Samman lad though.

I agree with your opening comment but not re the list of players. Perhaps I didn't choose the right words - what I was really meaning is that we don't have anybody who will scare teams with their pace. How many times do we say United players make a break but get caught by players chasing back. Turn that around the other way and the entire defence is often caught out and rarely gets back in time. JCR is possibly the exception but he doesn't play enough games for one reason or another.

Murphy, Done, Adams are all lightning quick. Not really sure what else you're expecting...

I think a quick comparison of Colchester and us shows that we lacked pace considerably at the back and in midfield.

Its not just 2, 5, 10 or 20 yard pace, but speed of thought and movement.
- Moncur didn't sit and watch his passes last night, JCR, Baxter, Basham all did. Moncur broke through Midfield and got forward. He forced his team mates to play him in. We just admired our possession and the snail pace that we played at.

- We lacked pace, but apart from a run in the first half from Collins, a run from McEverley for the penalty and Sharp (i think it was him) for the second (3rd) pen we didn't penetrate them enough or put them under pressure.

Adkins needs to get them working, not only on passing, but making those runs that split teams, either in midfield, defence or up front. They simply broke our formation last night.

Scougall came on but what did he offer? Nothing, he didn't make those runs he made in his first season. He didn't look to break free. Occasional spurts from Woolford aren't enough. JCR beating his man three times then putting in a crap cross aren't the answer. Freeman HAS to get forward more and take the ball forward.

Its not just pace we lack, its a captain, a leader and someone to get hold of the ball to dictate the pace of the game. This is Baxter's role. He's not doing it either. Too many passengers in our side, they need to take responsibility

The worst thing that Adkins did was wipe the slate clean for everyone.

i thought moncur was awesome (although a bit of a prat for running up to the kop).. also mellis and the other bury midfielder. decent box to box midfielders who can tackle pass and shoot.. they drive the game on through sheer force of will and drag the others with them.. we need this kind of player. then we don't need CB upgrades.

I really would be tempted to give Kieran Wallace the nod. He looks to have come on leaps during the pre season and isn't afraid to get forward. Can he be any worse than the Basham/Baxter partnership.

While we're at it, Basham is a much better centre half than he is midfielder.
