Fun Fact: If he signs he will have to score twice for every goal the lack of c/h's let in.
Signing a proven striker to put the ball in the net is not mutually exclusive to improving the defence.

Should said proven striker come first, with defensive reinforcements coming later, then so be it !!

For now, let's have a wee bit of faith in the club and the manager to deliver and that any judgement be made next May.

Bashing Billy Sharp is All good and well, but the change in formation might be enough to see us right in the attacking sense. We played one up top all of last season, and how often did it fall to a striker to put the ball in the back of the net? Not too often if I recall. I can never remember thinking we had a striker that couldn't hit a barn door. If you ask me, I think we might get a bit more out of 4-4-2 which seems to be preferred by NA. As you rightly point out, this does not sort out the C/H issue which should be our priority, not BS at this stage since we are unsure of how our strikers- who seem to be doing well in preseason - will do in this system.

I have to say, I am not usually a fan of players coming back for another go, it doesn't usually pan out, James Beattie being a prime example in recent years. I really hope that Billy proves me wrong, but hand on heart, I don't see it. Like I said, I hope he proves me wrong.

Fun fact: Sharp was playing out of position in the majority of his last period with us. He needs to be in and around the box, not chasing after things like he was made to do.
He wasnt , he was playing centre forward

Whats the record amount of pages for the Rumour mill as this thread is getting lllllllllllllllllllllllooooooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnggggggggggggggg.

and bbbbbbbbbbbbbboooooooooooooooooooooorrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnggggggggggggggggggggggg

29 years old, proven goalscorer in the league above, by all accounts a decent lad and wholly committed to the club. He'll cost in the region of £400-£500k.

Given (a) Porter scored a few at this level; (b) Baxter led our line during the resurgence under Clough in his first season, and; (c) we're all for giving Higdon a chance under the new regime, can someone explain to me why on earth people are moaning about Sharp? Seriously?

The mind boggles...

Absolutely. It isn't necessary to make signings in chronological order of importance. Football ain't that simple. NA is waiting for the right players. Is that beyond understanding?...

Don't answer that. It's a rhetorical question..

we all seem to be right behind Nigel Adkins, but there are a few doubters with this Billy Sharp link. if we are behind him then back his decisions

It's perfectly consistent to be behind Adkins yet think that signing Sharp would be a ridiculous decision

Higdon injury prone,Done injured, Adams and DG with limited experience leaving us with one other striker again with limited experience. Can't see how signing a proven striker at this level and above can be classed as a ridiculous decision.

or two, as appears the rumour seem to be indicating

Proven striker that's proven to be a disaster in his previous spells with us... We'll see the Adkins effect soon enough though

Was he wholly commited the last two times he didnt let the door hit his fat arse on the way out ?

Prolific at other club's thou who were at the same level we are now

Because Sharp was the workhorse getting the ball for him.
Not how i remember it ,dont remember sharp either "getting " the ball for beattie or doing very much at all

Would love to see billys assists for tgat season then to see what a puvotal role he played in beatties free kicks and pennos

Yep, several years ago... I find him one of those awkward players to try and fit into a team, hence him moving around a lot.

We'll see but I'd be very very underwhelmed if we signed him.

There are a dozen or more options out there just as good, probably a lot more accessible and able to fit into our current squad (which so far hasn't been touched)

First time around under Warnock he didn't really play and never got a chance. He was then sold to Scunthorpe and unless he was disastrous at the friendly away at Matlock, I can't see your point there.

Under Blackwell it was painfully obvious he was being made to run the channels when he was / is an orthodox poacher who scores all his goals in the box. Both spells were hardly a disaster. He didn't do particularly well for us, but I think that was more of a reflection of Blackwell's poor management.

I can see people having the appetite to reflect back on someone's career at SUFC in a poor light if they've turned us over, Devlin for example acted the **** on the way out of BDTBL and that's clouded my opinion on him. But Sharp didn't get a chance first time around and then was misused by a poor manager second time around. I can't understand the hate.

Really. Can't think of many with his goalscoring record and experience who would come to a league one club

For me, Done can do the running and buzz around. DCL will have a physical impact and is very mobile. McNulty has bags of potential but is still unproven. Higdon has a lot to prove but there's plenty of question marks there. Sharp is experienced with plenty of nous, a good voice amongst the relatively inexperienced strikers in the squad (see above) and has a season or two in the tank left before he packs in.

I wonder what Adkins will do regarding our width if he'll play 442 with Sharp and another striker up front.

I was quite keen on seeing two from Murphy, Adams, Done and possibly JCR, but not sure we can get away with so attacking wide men in such a formation. Will Adkins play Woolford and Scougall as wide men?

It was no coincidence that he started scoring after beattie left. He then got injured for the remainder of the season
