Sheffield United Football Club has announced its 'smoke free' policy, to take effect from the beginning of the 2007/08 season.
It is endorsed by the unanimous decision of all Coca-Cola Championship clubs to move to a smoke free match-day environment.
The League held lengthy consultations with all clubs before finalising details of a Smoke Free policy which takes into account views expressed by more than 43,000 fans in The Football League Supporters' Survey 2006.
The views of supporters nationwide were a key element in The Football League's decision to introduce a 'Smoke Free' policy, which is set to take effect at all League grounds from July 1, with almost 80% of fans participating in the survey advocating the introduction of some form of 'Smoke Free' policy at matches, with half of all fans wanting an outright ban
New legislation now determines that football stadiums are 'significantly enclosed spaces', consequently, smoking will not be permitted throughout the confines of Bramall Lane Stadium from July 2007 onwards.
Blades Estates Manager and Safety Officer Steve Hicks confirmed that in recent years smoking had become a contentious issue at Blades matches, with many letters being received surrounding the issue.
The Club have been proactive and the Capital One Family Stand has been a no smoking area for the past 2 seasons, creating a better environment for families and young fans to come along to watch the Blades.
"As a major football club, we obviously wanted to promote a healthy lifestyle. The Club had already decided to take an advanced stance on the issue and to ban smoking throughout the stadium for the coming season, and I'm pleased to hear that a Smoke Free policy will now cover the entire Football League."
