When you think about it what a shrewd, crafty,or inspired move it was to replace clough.attendances at home games would have suffered if clough had stayed in charge wherehas appointing adkins. us supporters will have renewed momentum.keeping attendances to the same level as last season could have seen our fist home game under clough attracting no more than 15,000 for the first home game and getting worse if we lost or produced more boring football

Must admit, I'd have found another season under Clough a tough job to continue watching. We've been more than patient, a fifth season in Division Three beckons and no promotion since 2006. Surely it's the law of averages that we're due a good season?

Don't think it would've made a huge difference if clough had stayed

Neither do i , and Clough may have rectified the error of his ways , if he had not got the boot.

The Adkins era has yet to kick off on the pitch for the new season . Attendances will improve by one thing only IMO - The Blades winning .

Yes but would clough rectify is ways. how long did he need better defensive cover. if he changed his ways before playoffs we could have had chance of going up last season

Like BushBlade has just said . We will never know . Its was a bit like miscommunication between the board and Clough . A 5 year plan with stability to get us promotion

McCabe / Prince and co meant into the premiership

Clough thought to get out of league 1 , so 7th and 5th ( with play off semi ) , he saw it as progress.

Again we will never know , and now we are in the hands of Adkins . At least we are progressing with managers to get us out of league 1 . Next task and aim - progressing with players.

Of course we could still be sat here in another 5 years debating the same issues...

I know this thread is about attendances, but with Wilson and Clough we've played in a certain way, backed the manager and never quite done it.

We've brought kids through, we've had talented players and the two things we've focussed on are playing neatly and being fit

So unless Adkins can get us playing to a level beyond what we've had in this time then we need something else to succeed.

I personally think we need a majorly physical side and/ or pace. Pace and power seem to work in this league.

So whether clough or Adkins started the season as gaffer was not going to affect the attendances. There weren't huge calls for clough to go, though there were dissenting voices. There were calls to improve the squad mainly at centre half and centre forward. Plus with the players going like Doyle, Wallace never being fit and with Baxter facing a possible ban - a centre mid. Baxter being available and Wallace apparently fit, probably reduces this requirement

We've not seen the expected transfer market moves for two centre halves and a striker. Had clough been here we'd all be going mad about this but many have faith in Adkins to turn Collins and perhaps higdon into the players we need. I don't hold this opinion myself, higdon is perhaps a Steve Davies on his day but not sure he's that answer.

If Adkins is comfortable with Collins, Alcock, MaGahey and MacEveley as centre halves then I think we need to sit and see this out, but I wouldn't be surprised if we were dipping back into the market before the end of August.

It's slightly puzzled me that we've brought a winger in as we have a number of options there and it's not a priority, but I understand the need to bring in players that'll do a job.

So, regarding attendances, I think whether it's clough of Adkins, the attendances were never going to dip too much at the start of the season, but could drop off a lot if we're struggling in October-December.

Good post Swiss . On attendances , last season was the first season , i actually thought to myself watching the blades , what am i doing here . The Yeovil performance away ,near on topped it for me .

Its the fantastic away support we have , which will i think , carry on being consistent .

However we go back , renew tickets and look forward to a new fresh dawn .

Transfer movement , does get you , the good feel factor , and the lack of movement at the moment , could be down to --

1.SUFC have not got the pulling power finance we all perhaps thought they had.

2.Players we have / are interested in , do not want to drop down from the championship.

3.No one is willing to take a risk on big money signings , in case we fail ( again )

4.The loan market is to be used , with players on a season long loan, and still in negotiation.

I do have a gut feeling we are in negotiation for Harry , and if so great . I do know a bid from SWFC did fail.

Bringing the right sort of players in , and good positive home performances , will bring the "sat on the fence" fans back to the Lane .

I think we will average around 17 to 18,000 which is still a good gate.

We just need the feel good factor , then club , team , fans , will be as one , and certain signings and a good start will definitely help.

The rumours / ongoing talk of Sharp / Henderson , we will just have to wait and see , but CB , attacking forward , are still to be resolved , especially as it was Adkins ( we already know ) , who said the squad is not good enough for promotion.

Haven't Wendy done that for years though...either that or announce a takeover to boost interest like with Cloud 9 or the Mugemoff fiasco...sell a few more season tickets and then announce it's fell through...it even went to the point of getting the shirt sponsorship before they pulled the plug on that one.
I agree on appointing Adkins could have boosted our attendances slightly, and I think if things don't start off well,he'll get a bit more time than Clough would have got next season,as patience had ran out with a lot of Blades.

Fans will come back. If we are in top 6 by end of August, fans will be flocking back through, Clough or no Clough.

Same at S6. If they start the season well, the tramps will find that extra £100 to watch a couple of games.

The only way fans will come flooding back , is if we are in the top two. Even then some will say we should be top of the league , not second .

S6 will struggle next season both on and off the pitch . False dawn .

Dig at clough, ding.

No dig at clough intended bladesway just stating the obvious

I'm sorry but you aren't stating anything obvious to me. Predictions of gates under a new manager are just that. Adkins loses his first couple of games then christ knows how many will be throwing themselves off the top of the South Stand.

You win games, more people turn up, you lose games they go away.

Watch out for me at the top of the south stand i probably be one of them.but my point is if clough were still in charge expectations would not have been so high so maybe lack of supporters for first 2/3games wherhas new manager/new signings raises expectations result more interest higher attendances unless as you say we lose by the way just out of interest whats the best way to get to the top of the south stand

Don't know Dale I have never made it up there. :)

Your right in one aspect, Clough loses the first two games and they will be checking no one has anything sharp on them. Adkins should at least inherit some good will.

Never mind if we do have a bad season we will find our way up there together(south stand)

We've been shit at home for going on 3 years now and we still averaged 20k last season. I think it will start slightly lower this season due to lower season ticket sales, but if we do well it should be around the 20k mark again

"Good will" will be in very short supply if the first team has "9. Hendo" in the program.

Tell you what G2K, the day you succumb to the rumour monkeys is a dark day for all of us. Stay strong. I don't think for one minute Henderson would be in the plans of a football man like Adkins.

Worst case scenario 16k

If we're doing the business consistently 24k and upward.

We've developed a pretty decent threshold to say we're 3rd division. In the 99/00 season the opener against Walsall was 12,000 and we even dropped to 8,000 a couple of months later when Port Vale dicked us at home and that was in a higher division.

Don't think it would've made a huge difference if clough had stayed
I think you are in s minitory who believe that. Everyone I speak to was bored senseless with Clough's football.

Of course, any optimism will evaporate after any bad run. And Clough spent quite heavily and eft us with an unbalanced squad, so time will tell if there's anything in the kitty to address it.

Others can call this a do ig, or just a regurgitation of the facts as I saw them throughout most of last season. The board eventually agreeing isn't going to alter my view, obviously.

5. The manager has decided we have got a good squad, they just need training/coaching/organising properly, with the right players playing in the right roles, and with just one or two additions at this stage, they could do well. After all he's spent two or three weeks now assessing them and you get the impression he is not too unhappy with the quality, but they were not used properly, or were not fit enough, or whatever the problem was, under his predecessor.

To be fair, if we accept that Clough didn't get the most out of the squad (hence the sack), and we finished in the PO's, then it's not unrealistic to think that the current squad could make automatic.

But one of our other failings was the lack of depth on key areas. That could bite us again next season.
