Archie Clark and John Short were Harris' chief scout. Mick Jones (not our striker from the 1960s) was Warnock's chief scout. Think Bassett had a network of scouts (Geoff Taylor was probably the chief scout as well as assistant manager) and I remember Wally Downes telling my mate at Josephines that during his long injury lay off in 1988-89 he did a lot of scouting work for Bassett
You have to appreciate it was difficult for Simon because he already had two paper rounds, morning and evening. And he was relying mainly on FM 2010 because KM wouldn't buy him a new one.And I think the reason so many are happy is because they didn't like Clough and think that if something is different to how Clough did it, then it must be good.
How can the scouting system have appeared to have been unprofessional? What access did any of us have to be able to judge it? Was the documentation on players lacking in detail? Did they not attend enough games? Did they not meet the briefs given by Clough when looking to identify players? Did they behave inappropriately when representing the club? Did they fiddle their expenses? Which of the signings were identified by the scouts and which were ones that Clough had already made his mind up on?

[CONFIRMED]
Backroom staff strengthened
26th June 2015
Nigel Adkins has made a vital addition to his backroom staff by bringing Lee Turnbull to Bramall Lane.
Former striker Turnbull joins the Blades as Head of Recruitment and Scouting after leaving a similar role at Scunthorpe United, where he worked alongside Adkins.
"We are delighted that Lee is joining us and we are confident that he will prove to be a very important member of our team," said new Blades boss Adkins.
Andy Crosby (Assistant Manager) and Dean Wilkins (First Team Coach) have already joined Adkins at Bramall Lane.
The United boss added: "Lee is very well-known to us and was an integral part of our success at Scunthorpe United. He has a very good eye for a player and will work closely with the existing staff with regards to identifying targets, as well as providing us with information on future opponents."
Turnbull, 47, played for Middlesbrough, Doncaster Rovers, Chesterfield and Scunthorpe United, amongst others, in a lengthy playing career.

I seem to remember all our potential targets were leaked for ages before. How can the scouting system have appeared to have been unprofessional?
What do you, I, or anyone else (fans) really know about our or any other scouting set up at a club? My guess would be sweet FA, but you never fail to come on here banging on about Nigel Clough failed here there and every fuckin where, playing, scouting, kit weshing, shouting, coaching, motivating, blah blah fuckin blah.I seem to remember all our potential targets were leaked for ages before.
Which just alerted other clubs.
The leaks came from somewhere and that to me was bang amateurish.
I'll give the dark side some credit, you rarely ever hear a peep until the contracts signed.
Just as it should be
The success of a scout is surely judged on bringing value into the club.
Finding players who turn out to be worth more than we paid for them
SC's record was just 2 players worth more than we paid for them out of the 20 plus signing.
Would any of the free transfers be worth anything now?
A pathetic ratio, when one of those was being looked at be half the scouts in the league so hardly a secret.
Any other scout would have been out on his arse, with that success rate.
We bring in a top scout with a proven track record to replace an utter disaster and the critics cant wait to defend the departed.
Pathetic when set against the backdrop of a new manager calling for Unity!
Are you going to name any names? Who was Bassett's chief scout? Who was Warnock's? Who was Harris's?
Was every signing they made great or were they a mixture of good and bad like Clough's signings?
Didn't the manager always have the final say in the end, even if a scout recommended a player?
Who can honestly say that "Clough's brother" was worse at the job than any of his unknown predecessors?
Wasn't it Billy who started the Blackpool/Scotland thing?I'm a bit too late to answer your quiz questions but as sure as night follows day a manager will only be truly successful if his signings are very good if not outstanding. Not many managers have the luxury of inheriting a wonderful squad though ironically Pochettini did so from Adkins at Southampton and Adkins left a good squad at Scunny I think. Therefore they normally have to improve what is there already, indeed even at Man Utd these days.
As mentioned above, Archie Clark provided the supply line to the club for years and in Bassett's time some of his signings were miraculous. Deane and Agana suddenly appeared from nowhere and so many of his old Crazy Gang were such good value especially Tracey, Hodges, Gayle and co.
I was not that enamoured with Warnock's signings overall and especially that vital year of the Prem.
The other side of the coin has been the years of wasting serious cash since 2007 by letting poor managers loose with it. In that time and after Philliskirk left we were actually without a Head Scout for over two years. I remember pointing that out to Adams at his "Meet the Manager" meeting and he said it was a priority; I think we appointed Billy Dearden who seemed to be anonymous.
Let's hope for an upturn.

What you've just wrote above is just agenda filled rubbish.
Oh I do, more than you might know, believe me!If you don't know what role a football scout plays, go ask a HR professional.
FFS sake this guy has a passport !Interview with Radio Sheffield already up:

FFS sake this guy has a passport !
Speaks very well and sounds like someone with good contacts who is a "relationship" person.
I sincerely hope he is successful.
He mentioned "Scout 7" software.

I think people are 'sticking up' for SC because he keeps getting dogs' abuse. Isn't part of a fresh start forgetting about the past? It seems for some posters they can't welcome the new guy without having a dig at the old.You don't need to be an 'expert' to realise, that on the whole, our scouting last year, to put it nicely, was not the best.
All this sticking up for last seasons scouts is pretty pathetic when we are starting a fresh. These same people are probably the ones that we're saying we shouldn't sack Clough when the evidence was unfortunately stacking up against him, with his scouts letting him down sadly.
All we can do with the new scouts is see who we bring in then judge them, that's probably the best time to see what Turnbull is like for us. Results on the pitch and value for a player in which you can gain price is the best way to see this.
