The Jess Ennis Stand - no more?

Indeed - an awkward removal of something the club probably shouldn't have done in the first place.

I have enormous respect for Jessica Ennis and what she's achieved, and was she a high profile fan of ours that had done a lot on behalf of the club in the past I could just about understand the stand-naming gesture the club made. But her involvement in the club seemed negligible prior to the Olympics, as did her support, and instead it reeked of the club trying to bask in the glow of her gold medals.

And also backfired spectacularly when Mr Evans was released.

Whether or not this was ultimately a good thing in relation to whether we employed him or not, is down to individual preference, but whatever your persuasion the fact that she was getting abuse due to her links with the club did not reflect well on us at all.

Decision to name the Jessica Ennis Stand was an unmitigated disaster. Too desperate, poorly judged, too grasping on Kevin McCabe's part. No disrespect to the superb athlete but she has no connection to the club, ok she has family members who attend matches, but what else ?

History now, but all the Ched Evans stuff got in the way as well.

Not the proudest moment in the history of the club and particularly the fans. The club asked her if they could name the stand, she had no part in the decision to try and bask in the reflected golden glory she achieved (not the greatest move the club ever made). Hurling abuse at her, for doing nothing other than protect her good name was a shameful episode, particularly if you take the above into account.

Totally agree she didnt gain anything out of the Lane end being named after her and as you say the abuse she got from trying to distance herself from Chedgate was uncalled for. She had to protect her name as she gains the majority of her earnings in sponsorship from companies that would not want to be associated with a convicted rapist

I'm guessing they're taking over the sponsorship of the Lane End?

How did you get to that conclusion?? :D

The Redbrik guy says he's proud to have their name above the "Bramall Lane Stand".

Adkins also points to the Bramall Lane stand behind him.

Jessica Ennis-Hill: "It was a real honour to have had the Bramall Lane stand named after me in 2012 in recognition of my Olympic achievements. However, I completely understand the need for Sheffield United to recognise the valuable contributions of its sponsors and want to wish the Club and the team all the best for the forthcoming season."

To be fair to Superblade in the grand scheme of his fuckups this probably isn't even top 10.

Aaaaaah, it all makes sense now.

Now I know why Redbrik didn't get in touch with me (when they promised they would) when a house I enquired about was removed from the market and then subsequently went back on. Then rang me (missed call) and told me it had been removed from the market again when I rang them back.

Too busy piss-farting about with a sponsorship deal to sell houses.

couldnt care less about her before she had the stand named after her but now I dont like her because of the way she and the other sponsours handled the Ched affair, they should have all kept their mouths shut until anything had actually happened. They could have said all they wanted to the board within the confines of the boardroom and made it clear they would distance themselves from the club if they signed him but they shouldnt have done it through the mainstream media. Her, charlie Webster and John Holland Sales all went down in my estimation with that episode. She had sod all to do with the club anyway

Should the club have named the stand after her: no
did they make any money out of naming the stand after her - apparently not
have United as a commercial organisation lost money: yes
Barmy idea in the first place.
Good luck Jess in Rio - we are all behind you.

Just glad the company is not called Bluebrik !

My take on this - when Jessica Ennis won gold in August 2012 there was a huge clamour in Sheffield for the Don Valley Stadium to be re-named after her.

This was all very embarrassing for the City Council as they already knew that DVS was past its sell by date and would be pulled down. The news of it being destroyed was not made public until January (?) 2013.

So who approached who? Did the Council approach SUFC or did the Blades approach the Council?

Either way she was recognized for her achievements.

Since 2012 it's been sad to read some of the comments made about her when one considers she's probably done more to lift the profile of this city than all of us posters on here put together will ever do.

1, They've every right to an opinion.
2, They've every right to air that opinion.
3, They cannot hide. The media-savvy anti-Ched campaign would have sought their support, and failing that, painted these people as rape normalisers.

All this antipathy is hopelessly misplaced.

Spot on Ted Danson, and that is one reason I will never buy another shirt with John Holland Sales or the DB Logistics Logo

May this be a lesson to the powers that be that this kind of nonsense never happens again.

If, in our 125 year history, we can not dream up a name more closely associated with the club that is appropriate to "name" a stand after, then I hang my head in shame.

they could have easily hid but they wanted their names in the papers for cheap publicity. They should have just done what Red Tooth did what Nikes donw with FIFA and just said we are aware of the situation and are following it closely , we will comment when and if there is something to comment on.

As it was they dragged our club through the mud unnescserily

They couldn't hide. They were focused on by the anti Ched campaign. If they had done nothing, they would have been portrayed as condoning rape. They had to make a commercial decision as to what was best for their business/reputation. And - shock horror - they may actually have felt strongly about the issue.
