This is what a few of our players need. Imagine how good Murphy would be if he wasn't so weedy.

It would be good to prescribe a strength program to the players over the summer so they only have to get match fit before the season starts, which shouldn't be too hard for a professional footballer.

If anyone, Adkins should recognise this although it might be too late for this season. Just hate to see us outmuscled every week.

I hope a representative of Barcelona reads this. The sooner that sprout called Messi adds muscle to that scrawny frame the sooner we'll see his true potential.

You're right, our players are in fine condition.

Why bother trying to improve physically, especially as the phenomenal Lionel Messi of Barcelona is little.

Didn't seem to do Ronaldo any harm... Although I get your point.
It's getting the balance between gym work to gain strength and power and not becoming muscle bound. We don't want eleven Akinfenwas but strength and balance is important. The likes of Aguerro and Suarez aren't big but they are really hard to knock off the ball.

The point I'm making is that although it's a contact sport, and that upper body strength may help, my view is that there are enough examples of what might be called players of slight build who excelled in football - Strachan, Archie Gemmill. Giles, Hazard, Iniesta, are a few who come to mind - to counter the near obsession with muscularity. I can understand why a trend has developed towards this type of thing, but it doesn't actually make for better players. Returning to the example of Messi, he's shown enough times that brawn can be left floundering against his relatively meagre build, but then I suppose that applies to most players he plays against.

Yes, the example of Messi. We don't have any players like Messi. A lot of Sheffield United players in the third division of English football would benefit from being stronger in both upper and lower body.

If I was to use a daft example it would be Cristiano Ronaldo. He has definitely become a better player by improving his strength and muscularity. I think all of our players would too, especially the Scottish boys.

Personally I don't think it's a 'proven', one way or the other. What I do think is that it's hoped for, and I'm with anyone who hopes it will improve any of our players. I see little Stevie Quinn, previously of SUFC, now performs adequately at Hull. And I'm of the understanding that he's not grown an inch, in height or chest size, since he departed.

Totally get what you're saying from how you see it, fair comments.

I'm not expecting anyone to be getting taller. I do think our players in our current standing would perform better though (did I mention that?).

Who needs Messi when you have had Nyron Knobworthy and Jordan Stewart gracing the park at BDTBL.

Bring Blackwell back and sign some right big lads I say.....

Time for another lie down

Good work. Stereotyping big and little people there though.

Neither Messi nor Quinny have to operate in the agricultural division we're stuck in !!! We performed against higher division sides in the last 2 years but not in our own division. There is the evidence if any were needed that we are too small, too weak and too slow for Division 1. Players like Baxter, Scougal, Murphy and the rest of our talented midgets do not get fouls when they are fouled in this crappy division.
THAT, is the problem .....

Hold on, isn't Baxter regarded as a fat lad? Surely, if that's the case, and I doubt it is, he should have enough bulk to let players bounce off of him? Yes, industrial goes some way to describe what Div 1 presents, but has anyone addressed attitude? You know, that thing that separates those who have a desire to do well and those who are second best in thought and movement.

Seriously, perhaps a few might benefit from having better upper body muscularity, but I've seen thin lads go through a ball and the man in possession, and all because they wanted to win the tackle. I doubt any of this had anything to do with how many burgers they'd gobbled down?

I'm not commenting on Baxters diet ....... more the fact that our miniature skilful players will NEVER influence this Division because they get decked and no foul is given at this level. Evidence ...... sumo style throw on Scougal at Bradford.
We are too small, too slow and too weak, at the moment, for this Division ..... as evidenced by our league position and getting beaten in the semis by a team that were stuffed in the final.

I'm not disagreeing about the fact that we're overburdened with small players. My feelings regarding this are at odds with most posts on this subject as it seems to have become a fashionable theme that forgets the previous 4 seasons in this division. Then we were simply shit, now we're shit and small. The longer we're in this poxy division the more reasons we'll find for our failure. Yes, we need more physical balance, but lets not throw out the baby with the bathwater. If we see a truly talented player whose physique is on the small side, let's not dismiss him simply because he's not built like a brick shithouse.

I can't recall mentioning not ensuring that players shouldn't be in good condition, so please stop misinterpreting my comments. The point is very simple, look at each player's physical attributes in relation to the job they're expected to do, and then ensure they are equipped to do that job effectively. Whether this involves added muscle, better athleticism or whatever, surely it's this that should be addressed and improved on if it's thought necessary.

Hallelujah. Our players would be equipped to do their job more effectively (Sheffield United, League 1) if they were bigger (probably) and stronger (unquestionably).

Your post would have been received with greater appreciation if you'd said something along the lines of 'Oh, sorry, I misunderstood'...instead of attempting to make a point where there was none to make. Hollow and vacuous, try harder.

Woah, chill man. I think we should leave this now, you don't seem to be coping well with our difference in opinion.

I said to you earlier in the thread I get where you're coming from and fair comment.

In return, try and be less 'celebratory' over a point I never made in the first place. As for my coping mechanisms, they're functioning well, and this falls way below any radar for life's genuine problems.

First principle of most team games is that you choose players with differing, complimentary skill sets.

In L1, broadly speaking you have got the choice of little fuckers who can pass the ball and/or dribble or big fuckers who are good in the air and shit on the deck. Too many big fuckers; long ball, too many little fuckers, weak ineffective sideways passing. If you can find 11 big fuckers who can also play good football, you're probably Jogi Loew.

Ok, you win. Can we stop now?
