Been a Blade since I can remember (60's) and was a regular at the Lane on the kop back then but since moved away from Sheffield area and so not been able to get down much in recent years. Now I've got more "time" on my hands (aka voluntary redundancy) and been able to get down to a lot of saturday home games last couple of seasons. Don't mind the trek if it's a good game but mostly it were awful last season (esp. Barnsley, Crewe and Fleetwood, not to mention nervy 1-0 against Port Vale, nervy 1-0 win hanging on against mighty Crawley - playing it in to the corners at the end etc etc). When I tot up what I spent on tickets and train fares it was about the same as a season ticket so was quite peed off.

I quite liked Clough and supported him and wanted him to do well, but I remember saying when he first came in (to me brother who I go to the games with) good guy, great player, but what has he actually achieved as a manager?

Really fired up now with Nigel Adkins coming in and can't wait for next season!

One thing I have noticed, on the South stand there is no singing whatsoever, any attempts to get any going are just embarrassing. They say the crowd is like an extra man ....

No there isn't. You're quite right. Not much in the rest of the ground either. The general view is that voices should not be wasted on encouraging our players or intimidating the opposition. Rather, the vocal chords and larynx should be rested sufficiently to permit moaning, groaning and booing at our own team. Certainly extra effort has to be reserved for hurling loud and personal abuse towards the manager. This is particularly essential for those attention-seekers close enough for the Manager to hear their vitriolic, self-indulgent drivel.

It's the Bladesfans' Way.

I'd love to see the South Stand getting some chants going again, and giving the opposition bench, fans, linesman a bit of stick like it used to (obviously without going OTT).

Just watch all areas of the home crowd go if belief is restored by the new management team.

It's a long, long time since we had belief in the owners and the manager.

United's crowd is essentially loyal despite all the knocks, trouble is the loyalty is mixed with deep resentment about how the club has been run. Even though KM tried with serious money, fact is he failed. The new ownership offers a chance to restore belief and once that's back Bramall Lane rocks. After all the bad times no crowd will appreciate any small improvements more than us, but watch us go if we win promotion and look well placed to take on the Championship! Even the South Stand finds it's voice when that belief is back.

Warnock took it so far but the last manager to restore true belief was Bassett, bless him. Life for Blades fans was so different then.

With the appointment of Adkins and if we sign exciting players over the summer, I could see us shifting 16-17k season tickets and by god if we get steam rolling this league early doors we'll average 26k and it WILL be bloody noisy.

Welcome WB

As others say, no singing on the South Stand. Being an oldie. like myself, why don't you start em off?

Remember the olden days with the one who started em off on the Kop? "Give us an "S". Give us an "H"

Gerr em gooin, you know it makes sense :)

PS: Hope you're getting a ST this season. Lets get that 12k up to 15k

I've been in there 25 years and believe me I've tried to get chants and songs going. You stand up and sing but after a couple of lines all you can hear is your own voice and the silence around is deafening, you can feel the disapproval and it doesn't take long for your bottle to drain away and you slink back into your seat. Maybe the odd kind neighbour pats you on the back and says "you tried".

Some of my neighbours don't stand up at any stage, not even when we score, not ever when a player leaves the pitch even if he's MOM and scored a couple of goals. Really nice people but inhibited; always chatty but emotion?no way!

It is also difficult in the family stand

Let's have a reality check. Last season in the league there was nothing to sing about or write home about. It was as dull as dishwater.

Here's hoping for a return to passionate, high tempo exciting football. Then the singing will start.

Of course if you want to sing, join a choir. Penistoneale Voice choir are desperate for new singers.

This is the exact reason that I have moved from the SS back to the Kop for next season. I have spent the last five years in the SS and there has been a good atmosphere on occasion with plenty of singing but only in exceptional circumstances (actually leading by a few goals and during the cup scalps that we took).

If we get off to a good start this season then I can see the atmosphere improving all round the ground as positivity increases.

I said this before, but make no excuses for saying it again, I (we) moved to the South Stand many years ago when my eldest was born and I got knackered trying to lift him above heads on the Kop every time there was a goal scoring opportunity.

I think most people tend to take any seat near the outside and then move further and further towards the center over successive seasons, we went in the exact opposite direction, we headed further and further towards the away fans because there was a couple of sections of the South Stand that were really noisy (G and H block are the corner ones I believe?). Being with a young 'un I always sat towards the inside and above the entrance of G rather than directly next to the away fans (the thinking being if it ever seriously kicked off we could head down and out fairly easy), but back then it seemed like it was more likely to kick off in the Family Stand than on the South (until they shut that corner).

The Premier League season was great and could be really lively. I remember the Villa game was incredibly noisy from both sets of fans and it sounded like the Kop and the South Stand were singing entirely different songs at different times! Happy days. Oddly the area seemed to be noisier during the less busy games when there were just season ticket holders there (its a strange thing that can vary game to game, I guess that "crowd awkwardness" that some people get is infectious. I'm usually too full of beer to notice :D). It was really special there when both sets of fans were lively and responding to each other. I know on nearly every occasion the Kop will have been louder, but in the much smaller, confined (and practically sitting beside/on top of the away fans) corner of the South Stand it often felt very intense, and I'm sure, very intimidating if you weren't used to it.

The next couple of seasons were probably the best in that corner. Really noisy, good banter with the away fans. One game we moved over to the family stand (I think probably the playoff game against Preston), and were so jealous we weren't in our usual seats, that corner was rocking the entire game and easily sounded like the loudest part of the ground.

To state the obvious, I still prefer the view from the South Stand, but the atmosphere is a vital part of the experience for me. Such a shame the South Stand sounds like a morgue these days.

....
Ive argued it all my life
Ive been hooked since being dazzled by Keith Kettleboroughs bald head flashing in the sun light
but in a season theres always always 5 to 8 games that are complete right offs, hideous mind numbing spectacles you wished youd missed
some seasons its nearer 15
but thats what you get
imagine the owls fans lot , paying 500 notes next season to watch their 5 home wins
all fans have to watch dross, admitted wednesday fans watch little else

Even in succesful seasons theres always games that are utter garbage, when Adkins took saints up they only won 1 of their first 10- they endured some right crap before it came good

Just watch all areas of the home crowd go if belief is restored by the new management team.

Welcome WB :)

This is a well vented topic and rather than rewrite history I have nicked a couple of quotes from fellow posters Woodwardfan & dingledog.

Truth is when things are going well, we are being entertained with competitive football and the players are bleeding with effort the wall of sound in BDTBL is awesome.

Unfortunately apart from when we beat Southampton there was little opportunity last season (and many other seasons) to get the crowd lifted. Another unfortunate is that subsequent managers seem to believe it's the fans fault the players are not performing and have been quick to say so (non more than NC). TBH it's like asking you to give positive feedback on something you bought on eBay/Amazon before you receive the goods.

I am confident the new setup will deliver entertaining football and edfort and if that is produced the fans will respond in a very positive manner, something we have been unable to do for 5/6 years

But those days are gone, I'm still bouncing off the walls with the events of the past few days (Splatters demise is a beautiful bonus) and I am sure everyone else is and that will show in the first home game atmosphere.

This is our time the blades are on their way back.

If I lived nearer I definitely would, but can't afford it with travel costs on top at the moment. Mind you when I've turned 60 it'll come down -unless they put it up to 66 by the time I get there like everything else these days ;-)

Winker. Tha'll get a season ticket for next to nowt if tha over 60. o_O I'm looking forward to mine next year.

You must have benefited from cheap Sheffield bus fairs for years before you left so put what you saved in a tin and put it towards a mega bus to the Lane!!

Come on now, give it a rest good Dr Pinch. It's a new era, we're all (well most of us) feeling quite chipper about the future. Bygones and all that. We're all Blades aren't we...

"This is where we hold them! This is where we fight! This is where they die!" (Well, not literally 'die', maybe just slink back to their respective hovels after being thumped 5-0 :))

As them all around you say . For fuck sake Woody sit down. If its not getting up to sing its getting up for a piss.:D

UTB

...it's just the 'I' and 'T' that I have problems with.:D

Genius :) i rembember the fleetwood game . But without sounding like a stereo typical man I dont feel like I could do both chanting & concentrating also babysitting a 6yr old doesnt help either haha

1) You can't expect everyone to sing and chant, everyone has there own way to watch football/ support the team.
2) maybe have singing areas down at the lane, one area in each stand may help the atmosphere at bit.
3) better chants? plenty sing the greasy chip butty song, we are bladesmen ect, so maybe if our choir came up with more original songs it may spark some more interest.
4) cheaper tickets will bring in more people = more noise.
5) better attacking football.
but yeah the lane can be flat at times but a lot of football at the lane recently as been **** poor, its life draining at times.

I have a season ticket in the front row of the South stand and got shouted at by a steward at the Swindon match for my language. There are some of us on there that would like to make more noise

G and H block in South Stand used to be really intimidating for opponents, remember those nights from the triple assault season in 02 / 03 ? It was like we had an extra Kop at that end of the ground.

Of course South Yorkshire Police and the zealous stewards soon put a stop to that and effectively chopped it's Balls off.

Suspect the flare chucked towards the Wendy fans had something to do with that...Shame because G & H were indeed like an extra kop..

That's exactly it.

Singing and good-natured banter with opposing fans = good.

Firing red-hot missiles into crowds of fellow football fans = bad.

Some of our "fans" didn't understand that and the club, the majority and the atmosphere have suffered ever since.
