we need some onewho can get us up and be entertaining
Clough was hated by some for being dull
obviously drawing his last game 5-5 to get sacked shows a new manager needs to win games 8-6 to provide better entertainment

Can't deny his results but FFS he's a fat, slobby, gobshite. I would be truly embarrassed to see his blubbery carcass in our dugout. Continually hoiking his trousers up as his groaning, overworked belt slithers down his fat arse. But he has done at cracking job at toy town.
Ha ha. he would make me feel slim! I remember being at the New York stadium in Sept 2013 and looking how slim and neatly dressed David Weir was and Evans being the opposite. The final score was Evans 3 Weir 1

Ok, my question was "why not?" & you have answered. He seems to tick a lot of boxes & is right under our nose. But despite being a winner he is fat & can be controversial. Let's go for Phil Parkinson then.

Unless you can think of anybody better?

Yes I can. Adkins by a mile is the best candidate.

There are plenty of managers who succeed with a small club and fail under the pressure of a bigger environment. For that reason I'm nervous of Warburton.

Question 1, have you got promotion from this league?
Question 2, have you done it with a club of United's standing and expectations?

No to either means another gamble given there are managers out there who can say yes to both.

Apart from Adkins, who then failed at Reading, who? Let's have your list of candidates.

Let's not get to big for our boots. A club of uniteds standing... We're a lg1 club and nothing bigger or better. So I'd say that Steve Evans would answer yes to both of those. Like you John, Adkins would get my nod and there would be another couple in front on Evans but he should be in our thoughts.

I think that most managers will have 'failed' at somewhere or other. There are no cast iron guarantees. Evans would not be guaranteed to succeed , Adkins would not be guaranteed, Alex Ferguson would not be guaranteed. The beauty of fans forums is that people get to give their opinion and it's opinion only. It beats me why some people get so excited and wound up about it. I'm all for debate but let's not get mardy.......

I'd go with Adkins too - but there aren't many managers with a track record that can't be written off as a flash in the pan. Overlay your criteria and it's a really small group, who'd probably turn us down.

My only reservation about Evans is that he'd not get a crack of the whip - so many are against him. But that reflects the mess we've got ourselves into. We've become so wrapped up in the wrong things that absolute winners don't make the cut.

Find me a manager who hasn't had a bad season and I'll show you one who's not been a manager very long. Writing off Adkins on that basis given our position and given his CV would be insanity.

So, off the top of my head, Adkins, Lambert, Jones, Grayson... All managed similar clubs to success in this league. I don't like all of them, but they meet the criteria.

My god it just gets worse, as I catch-up on the news.

Evans would just about do me in.

Oh aye, we're not better. But we still demand automatic promotion and have a large crowd to please.

It's a mile away from working without such pressure at a truly small club, of which there are plenty in this league.

I'm not writing off anybody, I would be delighted with Adkins. Jones???? Why would Grayson come to us? Similarly with Lambert. There is only one realistic name on your list.

I'm just surprised that people wouldn't at least look at Steve Evans' record, and just blindly dismiss the idea without any thought.

We have money, infrastructure, support and real potential. Lambert's stock is rock bottom. It's not impossible. Grayson is a long shot and Jones purely theoretical, but both have done exactly what we need next season.

I have thought about Evans and wouldn't place him above Warburton. I'm not dismissing him because he's fat but because he's hugely unpleasant and divisive. He's a third tier choice at best.

Our previous appointments, Wilson, Weir and Clough... Only one got us to the edge of promotion and he was the one who'd done it before in this league. Clough was next best, but he'd only done it at little old Burton. So let's do all we can to get someone with a CV that ticks all the boxes.

I know that logically I shouldn't be opposed to someone with an admittedly recent impressive record, but Evans for manager? Yeah, I guess he could be a reasonable opti.......NO! No, sorry I just can't support the idea.

The ground would certainly look nearer a sell out with him in it.

I don't think there's even a chance he'd leave the millers for us, but saying that I'd welcome him with open arms (very wide open)

This thread is a bit Fatist, good job he's not black or homosexual.

Shows how low we have sunk as a club. I'd take the fat arse if he was black, homosexual, wore makeup and a pink tu tu on match days if he could get us out of this league in one season.

After that I can't see him getting to the end of a 3 year contract one way or the other

Get Pullis in

Just can't see McCabe and HRH sharing the plate of prawn sandwiches with Evans before the match. Wait, swop that round, can't see Evans sharing a plate of prawn sandwiches full stop.

Better make a quick decision before the new pitch goes down, need a bit of extra support in the old technical area

steve evans on a 1 year deal to do the work and get us up then beg clough to come back thats my ideal situation

Yes, in the fullness of time Clough - like Blackwell and Wilson - will be viewed through rose-tinted glasses. For the more rational of us, it was an utter chore watching the garbage that Clough served up. With him in charge, we'd have been at this level for the next ten years. Thank fuck he's gone. He was steadily destroying the careers of McNulty (shameful public criticism) and Louis Reed. He'd have done the same with Che Adams. His pathetic displays of faux outrage from the 'technical area' - backed up by his public humiliations, fallings out and favouritism - puts him in the John Carver school of managerial no-marks.

And I'd argue that it's a job any manager would jump at. We do not 'demand' promotion. As last season proved, the supporters turned up in fantastic numbers despite there being zero expectations of entertainment, let alone optimism. Once again, this is a pivotal moment in United's history and the board simply must get it right. So let's leave all the usual accusations that it's all the fans fault aside. Rather than all the 'why would X come to Bramall Lane?' let's look at the many positives that BDTBL has to offer. There's a reason over fifty managers have been sacked this year - most of them are no fucking good. Even with the law of averages, Clough was taking us backwards. With very few tweaks and expenditure - which most fans have been aware of for well over a year but which Clough pig-headedly refused to recognise - we can hit the ground running in August. Get Warburton in and watch us fly.

I'll sign off with offering my thanks to Clough. Not for robbing me of many hours of my life over the past two seasons, but for saving me around £200 in an utterly wasted trip to Wembley. Take the money and run, Clough. Some other mugs will employ you. Not for the fact that you're a piss-poor manager, but for the fact that your name is Clough.

We are a more attractive outfit than when we appointed Clough too in my view. So on the most basic of levels I feel we should be able to attract someone better.

Exactly.

If he was a slim Italian called Roberto he'd be top of our wishlist.

It's a results business and he should be considered.

A bit of snobbery going on with Steve Evans . We are in league 1 . He knows how to get teams promoted out of the lower divisions and keeping them up in the championship.

If he can work with Tony Stewart , he can work with our bad cap board at the lane.

When as weight had anything to do with managing a football club. We have had Clough , Warnock , Blackwell for the annoyance factor . At least it is , what you see is what you get.

I wish SUFC were in Rotherham United position. In the championship.

For me its Robinson , but the fat bloke down the road , would be a close second.

Maybe we should get a slim person who will wear a nice smart suit or tracksuit and looks like he could still play football. Stuart Pearce it is.

I expect promotion next year, but my support doesn't depend on it.

The board expect promotion next year, and it's crystal clear their support for any new manager depends on it.

I'm not blaming the fans, but getting players to relax in the face of big crowds and impatient chairmen is a real skill.

No I'm not straight on that. But that's not a discussion for now. :)

No I'm not either. Football is a sport for athletes. Players who are overweight are fair game because it's the antithesis of athleticism. It's not the same as racism and homophobia, not in the connect of sport it isn't.

I just can't agree with the inverted snobbery of "Why would X come to us...?" And "we're only a league one club, nothing more..."

It's bollocks. Look at the history, the crowds, the ground. We're Sheffield United, for Pele's sake. Stop the forelock-tugging and cap-doffing. Any of the managers mentioned would be honoured to manage our club. Adkins, for example: Physio at Scunthorpe - hardly a platform for Billy Bigtime, is it?

Have a bit of pride in your club, Blades.
