Anyone believe that a player would know what the hierarchy are planning to do before the manager did?

The player could have just heard some rumours around the club, we all hear rumours at work, why would a football club be any different?

Exactly - there could be the scenario where the board are clearly not happy but he could be staying anyway. The player may just be relaying that it's not a "cut and dried" decision that he's going to stay.

It could be that between them they allowed Clough to continue, sort the retained list promo video etc, but the Prince has the power to overrule them and if Phipp's meeting with the prince went that way then it went that way. Well yeah, that's what rumours are. Clough might be sacked tomorrow or he might have a job for life. We'll find out over the next few weeks if there is any truth in what the OP was told.
