What's that got to do with my initial post? You said actually he was back up to Simonsen when that had nothing to do with it.
You said that he would be a good backup and then said 'I remember when he came in for long" I thought you meant when we signed him. My mistake sorry

We've just got to hope that Clough doesn't only concentrate on the back four . We get the defence right and find out the problem is now with the goalkeeper . It does look more and more , that Clough has got to build a complete new side next season , barring one or two players. I would like to see the Chesterfield fella in the net.

Yes, I hope so too. That is exactly what we need to do

No probs, i thought you mis read it, not to worry. Hopefully we get that many good attacking players in that we don't have to worry who the GK is:)

I think the attack is sorted apart from the right mid position. Without JCR we need to reinforce it

Attacking minded players, we still need some as we don't have much in the way of creativity. Tbf we need players all over the pitch due to bad decisions and injuries.
Very true. But I don't think you are going to find many fabregases in this league;)

No. And this is one where some of the fans really are having a negative effect.

Howard has been a good keeper all season. All of a sudden he's a scapegoat. That in turn affects his confidence.

He needs the very public backing of the manager. He's got it.

Howard also needs our very public support. Fwiw he's got mine.
Oh no WHF, not the old "it's the fans fault" please, respect your post but not its the fans fault from anyone

That's probably what George long needed but he didn't get. Howard is a poor goalie and isn't going to change. By Nigel giving him a public backing means he's a problem. The fans are pointing out the key problems of the team as they want to get out of this stupid league and back to where the club belongs. You don't become a scapegoat unless there is a problem.

Isn't it just blindingly obvious. If you got work and get abuse then it's going to affect you. How is this even controversial?

The fans can be the twelfth man. That twelfth man can have a bad side as well as a good side.

How can it be otherwise?

Well, the best players respond to it and answer back to there critics

This simply isn't true. We had a very bad patch when Turner was in net. Did his best but not up to the job. Howard came back and he was secure. A relief. He was doing fine. Then there was a short spell where the opposition hit a few jammy screamers. He actually said one was his fault when I'm far from convinced it was. A bad sign. Then came Yeovil.

This is just a downward spiral of blame and loss of confidence.

We have a good keeper who needs looking after. For me this is one crystal clear case of where if we go after the keeper we'll make a problem that just isn't there. And it will cost a lot of money to fix it.

Sorry, just cant agree its the fans fault, we have been dished huge amounts of crap performances this season, are we supposed to just say well done, same again? contrary to many the fans haven't been overly aggressive towards players, minor booing and going quite are just the results of watching under achieving players and boring tactics. Its not the paying fans fault we go to be entertained and watch us winning.

In this case I'm talking specifically about Howard. If anyone goes after him I think that will create a problem that isn't there.

This 12th man business doesn't seem to work at the lane . May do, if the players were up for it , and followed the script. We don't pay to go to work , but do to watch United. Its only one fella to blame for the atmosphere sometimes at the lane , and he doesn't stand on the terrace .

It's a massive problem we haven't had a stable goalie since kenny and we can solve it. Howard just isn't good enough and to improve our swuad we need to make our squad like it was in our first season, we had a strong player in every position and that led to us finishing on 90+ points

The keeper is the player most in contact with the fans.

Generally they are confidence players.

If we start down this road there's going to be a BIG problem.

There are all sorts of reasons we didn't go up this is absolutely not one of them.

This again is untrue. It's not about ability it's about psychology. A minority respond to abuse and hostility (Ian Botham was one) but most people respond to praise and encouragement.
But fake praise is was. Encouragement can be given by the managers. Fans aren't there to look after players. Fans pay to see their team play well, any team that plays boring football or players that aren't up to standard get criticised. It's the managers and players job to better their game and prove fans right. Players have to fight for their position, the worst thing about a player is for them to get complacent, fans keep players on their toes and stop them from getting complacent, this helps them to improve themselves.

Agree , this season has had me , and fans around me , full off apathy and despondency, but not being aggressive to players , just a sense of - is this it then. The only thing that has got me off my seat is a weak bladder.

We will all know what aggressive is , when Millwall come back to town.

Shouting abuse is far more likely to destroy confidence, turn good players into bad ones, and even end careers.

If a fan wants to turn up and berate a player from his own team there are adverse consequences for the player and the team. Sometimes maybe the team deserve it, maybe Newcastle allegedly not trying.

Howard emphatically does not.

I agree with that. No player deserves to be abused verbally but criticism of a player I think helps

yes, yes, we should keep the players who failed us this season because they will be better next season. God says so.

On Howard, I've never been convinced. He has good runs and then bad ones. good shot stopper but less so when dealing with balls in the air. I'd be more convinced if they could operate on his feet so he could kick straight.

So when did this injury occur to Howard? As he has been really poor since before Christmas. We definitely need a new keeper, he lets in soo many weak efforts on goal

It's definitely his back. Before his injury I can think off the top of my head West Ham, Preston away, Donny away, Rochdale at home, Bradford away - all games where he was excellent and made crucial saves.

Since his injury he has been poor and it's quite clear it is still a concern. Hopefully a pre season sorts it out but backs are difficult things to get right so unfortunately, I think we need a new number 1.
