Didn't know about this plaque. Wonder if there are any records of those adverts in the Sheffield papers in the library. There must be somewhere you'd've thought.

There are several books documenting the formation meeting and history of the events. As for the ads the Star keep historic press, you used to be able to order and buy past issues and I would imagine they might have online archives now. That'll keep you busy this afternoon William Henry Foulkes

Looking forward to your report :)

Time for some hyper-pedantry fun, I think. The plaque is wrong.

"Sheffield United football club was born".

They weren't forming a professional football "club" in 1889.

They were adding a professional football team to the established Sheffield United Cricket Club.

Hence until 1974, the Blades were Sheffield United Cricket and Football Club. So, it was the existing organisation that was changed, not a new one formed.... which is why I've always thought we really ought to have 1854 on the club badge as well as (if not in preference to) 1889. Not least because it'll confuse the tits off other footy fans, and add more interest to our story. "You were formed before football existed?"

Of course, this is all about semantics and interpretation of definitions... which is why it's fun... well, the kind of fun i like to have when I'm too hungover to go the Bull's Head on a sunday to talk bollocks over a beer or 6. I'd get mi coat, but I'm stuck to the sofa....

The advert was in two Sheffield papers the following morning. It said:

"The Committee of the Sheffield United Cricket Club have decided to form a FOOTBALL CLUB for next season for the Bramall Lane ground. Professionals may send testimonials and particulars before March 30th"

They're a lackadaisical bunch, especially on the front row. They need a lot more focus and intensity if they're going to give 110%.

Now you're going to tell me we won the League or Cup that season.

thats the team that started our league history , 1st season in division 2 , drawn by lot we finished runners up and were promoted, so they had focus, intensity and that winning mentality .
Wednesday luckily were drawn in league one and its 1 season in the top theyve had more than us , by chance

It was not drawn by lot. Wednesday got more votes for election to the top division than we did.

Wednesday have also spent 6 more seasons than us in the top flight, not 1.

I'ver raised this before, but I don't think there is any contemporary evidence the shorts were blue. All the photos show are dark shorts. They could be black or dark blue.
On the black and White photos they look blue...
