Shred,

When you get to the Pearly Gates, ask for Wickersley Blade - he'll get you a pint, and doubtless a session will ensue.

R.I.P.

I first started supporting the Blades in 1979 and he's been attending away matches all my Blades-supporting life. He's one of those that you never expect to die. Even though I only knew him on nodding terms I'm genuinely gutted.

I'd like to see the kop pay a tribute in the form of a big flag or flip cards, if such a thing could be arrnged

Cant believe he has gone, its a sad day for United ,RIP Shred

The flag is flying at half mast on John St, great tribute from the club

OMG. Gutted.

Used to steward on coaches with him.

RIP a mega Blade

Been supporting the Blades since 74/75 and Shred was always there. On the Kop, around the ground at the infrequent away matches I go to. Despite his reputation he always came across as a very mild man to me .
Your presence will be missed. RIP Shred.

Like many on here I never knew or spoke to him personally but I've known who he was since I started taking in away games in the early 80's, always seemed to see him at some point on match day. RIP.

God, that's a shock! I saw him all the time, and my Dad knew him from way back (from the away trips he arranged, I think).

RIP Shred, top Blade and top man.

Shocked by the news and don't know what to say.

First came across Shred at reserve matches in the early 70's.

Sheffield United lost a little of it's soul today.

R.I.P. Shred.

RIP Shred. First started going to away matches in 60s with my mates and Shred was doing the same with his mates, inevitably we hooked up and had some great laughs. A true legend.

As an indicator of how well known, liked, admired, respected - the wife called me at lunchtime to see if I'd seen the news.

I only met her some 4 or 5 years after I stopped regularly attending away games with Shred. She never spoke to Shred to my knowledge but she knew who he was, what he was and what impact the news would have.

I am in a shock, one of the nicest people I have met. My son liked him too

RIP Shred, a Blades legend
When my son wanted to go to his first away match without me in tow, I only allowed him to go if he went with Shred, knowing that him and the rest of the gang would look out for them. He's just text me devastated "away matches won't b eth e same!"

UTB

R.I.P Shred, it's people like he was who helps to make us into the support we have today. I'm 31 and have travelled to a couple of games with him a few years ago and i know loads of people of a similar age to me who would only ever travel on his coaches, that's how much respect he earned. Thoughts go out to his closest and dearest.

I also didn't know him personally but he always seemed to be around. Early 1972, at Leicester I think, someone pointed him out to me at a match and said "He's THE Blade" I last saw him at the Coventry match t'other Saturday, couldn't miss him with his trademark long hair. As I say I didn't know him but what others have said about him being a nice bloke doesn't surprise me as he just looked a kind, generous sort of person.

RIP

Like many others the only thing I knew of Shred was his reputation. He was a legend. RIP.
