Matt Done is a striker who plays up front as a centre forward!

Must have done in the last few weeks/months at Rochdale then because he played out wide everywhere else I've seen him. Barnsley fans don't seem to regard him as a centre forward....ffs some Rochdale fans don't!

Agreed. I think it's a good signing. It allows either Done/Murphy to play on the wing or up front, allowing one to assist the other.

Exactly what I was thinking - potentially very dangerous in league one, having Murphy and Done able to interchange throughout games.

I'm glad he was concentrating on loan signings?? Not hard enough clearly. I've never known a manager so publicly incapable of signing players.

Anyway, Done's a very good signing IF we can bring another striker in on loan.

Clough seems to take his time and target team players.

Lots better than rash signings, spending the clubs money on anyone 'cus they will sack me anyway.

Different thinking and more long term is the impression I get.

Roll on 2018, we'll be the next Southampton.

To those who might think this was a panic buy because other targets fell through (I was skeptical myself)....

Rochdale boss Keith Hill said of the transfer: “We turned down other bids [from Sheffield United] this month and I believe that I was pre-empting the possibility of this happening with my recruitment when you consider the business that we’ve done in getting Reuben Noble-Lazarus on a permanent basis and bringing Febian Brandy to the Football Club. Not only that, Joel Logan is stepping up to the mark, Callum Camps has hit form and Joe Bunney has been excellent on the training pitch.

Well, we'll see. He'll be an option in a few positions.

Keith Hill's comments:

He commented: “Matty Done has had a hell of time at the club. He helped us get promoted, albeit in a different position, and has been magnificent since we moved him to a number nine/ eleven position. He has been magnificent, not only as team player, but with his goal scoring aspects as well

its not that complicated lads - he was converted to a striker (left sided winger/forward) only this season.

Previously he played as a more conventional left midfielder and even at left back too.

So, those looking at his career stats might want to bear that in mind - if he can keep up this seasons form as an attacker then it can only be a good signing. Let's hope so!

We've signed almost 20 players, he's the most prolific we've ever had!

It's just bizarre. He's signed what 20 players now but every window he's publicly chased certain targets and failed. I've never known any other manager fail at signing so many players. Just really odd.

Keith Hill's comments:

I'm not knocking it, I hope he does well. I'm just not sure what we should do with a winger/false9/attacking mid in a team littered with all of those things already. Strikes me as we couldn't get any of the centre forwards we wanted so we've just bulked up on general attacking options to compensate.

That's probably due to the fact that the board and management are being more upfront with us about our targets etc.

There will always be something to whinge about though, eh...

That probably is the case... sometimes not everything goes as you'd like it. I trust that the powers that be have done their best possible this window.

Odd or sensible with money and not risking having to borrow £5M a season like the pigs just to keep going?

I understand what you are saying mate, but one of the things I personally don't like when Murphy goes through the middle is that I believe we lose some of his excellent wing play with no one else able to fill that void.

If Done comes in and plays wide, and keeps producing the goods as he has for Rochdale then to me that makes me less concerned that we lose something from our play when Murphy goes central. Alternatively, he plays straight down the middle. Having Murphy, Done, Brayford & Scougall in the same team looks exciting on the counter attack to me too!

I think some people are rushing to judgement on Matt Done, considering it's come as a surprise. I think the signings we have made, whilst maybe not the ideal first choice, do potentially strengthen a side that has already begun to build momentum towards the seasons end. And I hope so much to be proven right!

Don't forget Muir

Glad that's done.
Welcome to BDTBL Matty.

Bit of power, pace and aggression up top where we're lacking..as other's have said having him and Murphy interchanging/running at defences should be great!

UTB!

I wouldn't like to see Murphy playing centre forward regularly. He can do it well but he's such a good winger and has an ability to go past full backs 6 or 7 times a game and deliver a decent ball. He's a winger and the best one in the division.

Interesting one this. I would guess that with Flynn's return to the midfield, the return to fitness of Davies, the emergence of Adams, and the fact Coutts can play there too, that regardless of his positions prior to this season he'll predominantly be used up front for us.
