Rest against Preston?

Looking at the team laid out FFS are you Clough?
Cos I thought he was the only one stupid enough to waste Diego turning him into a left side player tracking the opposition fullback !!!

Umm is he not just speculating that, that may be the side Cloughy may put out rather than that being his ideal lineup for the cup game?

The the Capital one cup final within reach ....

In theory yes, in reality no. I'd be very surprised if we beat Spurs next week. They can't be so shit two games running surely. Apart from Queens Park Strangers we have only beaten Prem teams by one goal, one goal. We would have to get at least two next Wednesday to better that, or hope it goes to penalties after a Flynn equalising wonder goal.

We may be good at stopping goals but bloody awful at scoring them. Preston should be an opportunity to get into the fifth round. And of course we've just sold super sub! :)

Well that's six changes, so fairly major!

Good! If we don't rest most of the team and lose to Spurs, I for one will still be banging on about it in 20 years time saying "if only we'd rested a few more against Preston"

Agree, not bothered who turns out against Preston as long as our strongest possible team turns out on Wednesday.

I once drove on board a ferry, and a staff member showed me in which line to stop my car. As I was almost there, a young boy with downs syndrome, aged 8 or 9, was gesticulating and wanting me to drive to another lane. I gave him a smile, but chose to ignore him and stopped the car where I'd been told by the ferry staff member. Moments later the kid went past my car with some relatives and he was pointing at me, shaking his head and laughing. He must have thought I was unbelievably stupid, being unable to follow his very clear instructions.

Like the kid, maybe you didn't quite get my reasoning.

Our schedule is tight. We're discussing if we should rest players, for them to prepare better and be mentally and physically 100% for the Tottenham game on Wednesday. This means the Preston team won't be our best, and I tried to compose a reasonable team within our preferred formation.

Because of injuries and cup tied players we don't have natural cover for every position. If JCR, Flynn and Murphy need to be rested, we're especially struggling out wide. I agree that De Girolamo is better up front and would have liked to see him up there. I don't think he's ideal in a lone striker role though. Higdon needs a game and will probably play there.

I also included a possible tweak that would enable De Girolamo to play up front in a 3-5-2 system. I don't think it's realistic to expect us to play 4-4-2 with a weakened team away at Preston.

I imagine Clough will make as many changes a possible going on what he did in the Rotherham match last season. Which turned out to be on of our good league wins of last season. We do have the squad depth to rotate but would anyone be changing the team from the first leg? As well as we defended in the second half we offered nothing going forward til the last five mins and will clough address this by giving players more freedom or changing things round?

_____________Turner
Alcock Basham Kennedy Harris
Diego Cuvelier Doyle Baxter Adams
_____________Higdon

Rested:- Howard, Flynn, McCevely, JCR, Reed, Scougall, Murphy, McNulty

Freeman isn't cup-tied for tomorrow. Get him in at left back and give Bob Harris a breather.

Do you know that definitely? Derby supporting mate recons he's cup tied for Mansfield. If not then he's definitely got to play

Freeman is cup tied, both signings are infact. It says so in the article on the O/S

We need to go for it, win or lose. A replay (while better than losing) is not really preferable.
With the personnel available I'd go a straight 4-4-2:

Howard
Alcock McGahey Kennedy Harris

Flynn Basham Cuvelier Baxter

Higdon De Girolamo

Subs: Turner, B Davies (bring on for Flynn), K Wallace, Dimaio, Adams, Murphy, McEvely.

there's some defeatist rubbish on this thread. Some of you are as bad as Clough who I noticed got his excuses in early during his interviews. We are in a long run of defeats we need to win. We get money if we win and chance of a triple assault. Lets win and pick our best team to win.simple

Thats madness we have a chance of getting to a Cup Final on Wednesday
The players that played at WHL gave everything both mentally and physically they have to do the same next week
give some of them a rest
We don't stand a chance of winning on Wednesday if we don't win on Saturday. Confidence is key. Resting is stupid we are not Chelsea.

We did the same last season. We played a weakened side vs Rotherham, won, and our player were rested and well prepared for Wembley, which was a good performance and a great occasion.

WTF we got the confidence keeping Spurs to a winning via a pen and only yhaving 2 shots on target
We can field a reasonably competetive team against PNE as we have a large squad
The result against PNE will have no bearing against Spurs with regards to confidence

K.Wallace and C.Adams are both cup tied mate.

Just as a matter of interest, what is our best team? Because i still don't think Clough knows yet.We have a large sized squad, lets use it to our advantage. We won't be putting a team out to lose, that i can assure you.

So Bergen you are saying we should do what we did which resulted in a loss.
And we gain confidence from losing to Spurs last week? I'm not having that.
Some of you need to wake up and get that desire to win!
Worrying about the opposition is the root cause of Clough's overley defensive approach

Never mind those pesky ineligible player rules. Field them anyway, watch Adams score the winner in the Cup Final, earn millions, then pay a measly fine in the summer.

Job done.

;)

We're playing Preston North End mate, whatever team we put out we will have a chance of beating them. Also the flip side is put a full strength team out, lose, waste all the energy of them players, what have we achieved then.I'm fast asleep:rolleyes:
