Point of this thread being in direct response to the sentiment towards Clough in recent days on this very board.

Dick head last week.

Genius this, masterminding yet another Premier League scalp. 3 Zip away from home to boot !

Football fans are a funny old bunch !!!

Still fighting on ALL fronts in January = Job well done. Simples.

We HAVE a good manager. We DO NOT need a different one. Firing managers every 12-18 months when the "fans" throw their toys out is NOT the answer.

We can not win every game. We will not perform well in every match. Such is the nature of the game.

We ARE a L1 side. Let's try and remember that !!!!

Buzzing btw. Terrific result in Cup today (again). Well done to the entire playing and coaching Staff.

Now let's push on in the League which is still very much in our hands and very much within our capabilities.

Is it the fans who are a funny old bunch or are the players and manager frustratingly inconsistent?

Also Reed and McNulty make a massive difference.

***Enormous well done for today btw which they deserve as much as they've deserved recent criticism.
 
I'm not sure what over reaction we've seen. Of late, we've seen automatic promotion out of England's THIRD division, become an almost unrealistic dream, leaving us staring at the worst spell in the club's history.

"Firing on all fronts" is really pushing the boundary, but I'll take it in the spirit of a happy day.

What today has confirmed is that it's not really about the players, it's more about application and formation. The reality is that's the manager's fault and criticism may have been OTT, but still deserved.

Anyway, well done United and Clough. Today is still a great day, either way. ;)

Good post. Lets not detract from what has been an excellent result today, however, it highlights what a bunch of "Cup Tarts" we are and it also highlights that our squad is much more suited to playing Championship & Premiership sides than to play L1 sides.

We are still unlikely to be promoted despite our superb cup performances and THAT is a huge frustration for most Blades.
Great to have some good news this season ......

Lets just hope jan to april matches last years results .after the crewe game With us starting from 16 places higher could be good

I think Cloughs handling of Reed and Mcnulty is brilliant ,the pressure to play them every game is huge but they would burn out. They are viewed as great players rightly because they are ,but at the moment are both young inexperienced and could easily fall away if managed badly. There is a fair bit of self sacrifice in this by Clough which is easily over looked in the clamour for points ,he is doing the same with Diego ,although the detractors and wankers like Brian the Blade will tell you he doesn't like them and they should go elsewhere. They are being let down by the poor contribution of some team mates who aren't stepping up and taking the pressure off them.

I agree about Reed but McNulty is 22 that's not young! Evans scored 30 in a season age that a v similar age

Sorry I don't buy into this one Sitwell, I'm not saying don't rest them every now and again, but both look like they could handle the pressure of playing regular, we can't have a player like McNulty who knows where the net is warming his arse on the bench. Agree about your last sentence though.

It would be more genius if he rested them in the cup games and played them in the league..

There's the problem. You don't need to "out-strategise" your way out of League 1, you need to kick your bloody way out of it then start to look at strategies in the Championship

I was watching calender the other week can't remember who was on with John helm but they had nothing but praise for United and I agree with what they said that we have a brilliant footballing side but other teams won't let us play !! I might be wrong in this but most of the stats give us major pocession in games all we need is what everyone says a good strong striker ( not some Dutch football reject )
