It's an interesting thing in some respects. Protesting has a cost, if you're Bobby Sands its your life, if you're Nelson Mandela its getting locked up for 30 years and having to come out to Winnie. Even writing a letter has a cost in terms of time taken or even cost of the stamp. People would only protest if the perceived benefit outweighed the cost.
These days with online petitions and hashtags like #bringbackourgirls, the costs of protest have fallen dramatically. As a result people's 'protest threshold' has fallen. My suspicion is that most of the people who signed this petition, like others, aren't really that bothered. They are bothered enough to fill in a few boxes on a website. I am, thus, not sure that these signatures signify very much.
