No it's not. After two years inside we might currently have no idea whether he can play or not.

Indeed, but we must have made one of the following decisions; either:

(a) we are not signing a rapist; or
(b) we want to sign him and will do so if he is any good.

That decision could have been (and probably was) made a long time ago.

C) were signing a footballer.

Or do we have to categorise every other player that we sign?

Perhaps we can see this as a positive, signing a player to give him a second chance...

Otherwise send him back and throw away the key

The whole saga is the biggest bit of news surrounding our club since the West Ham / relegation affair. Chill out about the number of threads. It will pass.

Imagine the number of threads there will be once Ched comes back, bags 20 odd goals and then fucks off the club that gave him another chance to sign for someone like Middlesbrough in the league above on a free transfer as we only gave him a short term deal to protect "the brand".

Unfortunately, the numbskulls who will be singing "He'll shag who he wants!" when he makes his first appearance.

Indeed. You will get opposing fans chanting "rapist, rapist!" and such like and our lot doing the "he'll shag who he wants" song in response.

Great :-(

IMO the club will not offer Ched a contract on release, however, I believe he will be allowed back into the fold and will be training with the lads to 'earn a contract' come December/January.
This will be accompanied by a statement of regret and atonement, followed by lots of good ol' community work to show 'he's paying' for his crime and is 'sorry' for the harm he had done.

Of course the club has made a decision and if it were a flat 'no' they would already have stated this and 'moved on'..surely..!?!?!

...their numbskullery is not a direct result of Ched Evans, though. Some people are just wankers and they'll either continue to be wankers or grow out of it / get educated.

Regurgitated yet again but up to 90,000 signatures now

Well don't forget she has only 90,000 signatures now BUT she has yet to play her master card !!!

She is planning to go to the Pigs next away game and stand at the turnstiles and sign up all of their travelling supporters onto the petition as well. This will swell the numbers to around 170,000 or more, depending on if there are truffles to be found in the area.

Yeh ,like pigs can sign their name .

I'm guessing that most of the "individuals" who have signed the petition already, did so with a "X". She's probably exhausted the supply of "lets protest about something this weekend 'cos there's nothing else happening" crew.

How many signed it just because they can without really giving much of a shit?

Why doesn't Hatchett organise a rally outside Bramall Lane? Even bearing in mind travel costs and mobilisation issues you'd expect a round 20%, circa 20,000 people, to turn up for such a hugely important issue that they care so passionately about.

Is there a petition saying he should be allowed to sign for SUFC? How many have signed that?

I agree it's not something that most people are exercised about, but it does show the general drift of opinion. Sadly, you will always get more people agreeing with "punish the rapist some more" than "let's rehailitate the rapist".

The more I think about this, the more I think that an "in principle"* decsion must have been made a very long time ago.

They might have given it a few months to see if he went completely to pieces in prison, but when it became clear he hadn't, surely there was some discussion as to whether we would, in principle, have him back on release. No person with half a brain would leave it until he is actually out.

* By "in principle" I mean seeing the conviction itself as no barrier to a re-signing and that he will be signed if he is any good.

Another superbly balanced opinion for you as well, 'Jean Hatchet' also has her two penneth:

There's a right wobbly blowing up on Twitter because of one word in this article

The original article stated "Jean Hatchett, reportedly a domestic abuse survivor, started a petition on Change.org"

The fuss is over the word "Reportedly".

It's an interesting thing in some respects. Protesting has a cost, if you're Bobby Sands its your life, if you're Nelson Mandela its getting locked up for 30 years and having to come out to Winnie. Even writing a letter has a cost in terms of time taken or even cost of the stamp. People would only protest if the perceived benefit outweighed the cost.

These days with online petitions and hashtags like #bringbackourgirls, the costs of protest have fallen dramatically. As a result people's 'protest threshold' has fallen. My suspicion is that most of the people who signed this petition, like others, aren't really that bothered. They are bothered enough to fill in a few boxes on a website. I am, thus, not sure that these signatures signify very much.

Clicktivism basically.

“They must not be given the message that rape is a trivial crime. Young boys and men have to be absolutely sure that the importance of gaining a woman's consent to sex is essential or the act is rape.”

I'd like to be able to focus on the good points that she makes but I can't get past her bullshit. Who the fuck would look at Ched Evans and think rape is a trivial crime?

But the point is, she can't remember if she said yes or not? The other lad, who was found innocent, said that when Ched entered the room, she asked him if he minded Ched joining in (his words), she asked him to perform a sex act on her first, then when they started having sex, McDonald left the room. I thought that the lads outside watching through the windows had also recorded some of this on a phone, not sure if it ever was used in court?

I am not sticking up for Ched as what he did was stupid and he was found guilty for it.

There is an investigative journalist looking into all this now, I think (I am sure I read that somewhere) from down south, who has access to alot of the information that for whatever reason, the judge ruled was not admissable as evidence.

The rumours I have heard is that Danny Wilson wants him at Barnsley and Steve Evans thinks he could get him for Rotherham. Ched, apparently, wants to come back to Sheffield United for one season, to try and repay the fans for letting them down.

Indeed. But like I say, I don't see 90,000 people signing a petition saying "rehabilitate Ched Evans". You will always get more people, in an abstract way, wanting to put the boot into crims rather than help them. Sad, but true.

I didn't read all of what you said but I liked the gist so I'll give you a 'Like'. [/Irony]

There would be a delicious irony if the pressure on us to not sign him results in him signing for a club higher up the league (and hence more high profile).

Cue Darren in 3..2...1 to tell us all that no club in the championship will touch him with a barge pole.

This.

Bang ont'nose Walthy. The advent of Facebook, Twitter and the internet has made everything so much easier these days. Fifteen years ago, when I left school, you still would have had to write a letter to protest something like this. Now, you just go online and like you say, fill in a few boxes.

The uproar will finish in a week or so, and the outraged people will find another cause. Also, I am heartily sick and tired of people who feel he should return being classed as 'rape apologists' simply because they disagree with the opinion of a woman with an agenda.

Pretty obvious isn't it? :-)

Surely you are not one of those starry eyed utopians who think Evans thinks he "owes" SUFC and thus would play for us on a quarter of the money rather than, say, Norwich or Wolves?

Like West Ham Fulham or Norwich or another one of those cosy 'family' clubs that Trevor Brooking wanks over.
