Reading through various comments/posts on forums and social media, lots of comments regarding Diego last night.

The main comments seem to be "He was ineffective but he was played out wide and not up top so not his fault"

I cant help but remember the slating Baxter got last year regardless of the fact he was being played as a lone striker.

Some of our fans really bother me sometimes.

And apparently Michael Higdon is over weight. Well, he must have been over weight all his career, because he looks to me like he's the same shape now as he's always been.

Is this another bash Diego thread? I think Baxter has a bit more experience in playing different roles and yes some fans bother me, including myself!

I'm a Higdon fan, but comparing pictures taken of him during games last season with pictures taken this season would suggest that he's heavier this year...

Why? Never can understand this.

Everyone has an opinion on various subjects. You either agree with them or you don't, what's to get bothered about when it's something as totally unimportant (in real world terms) as football?
If I don't agree with something then I might argue the toss if I can be arsed, but the fact they have a different opinion to me doesn't "bother" me in the slightest.

I disagree. He looks slightly lighter now than when with Motherwell.

Check out the photos of him last season in Holland.

Surely a football forum is the place to discuss issues on football I dont agree with though. Yes it might be unimportant in regards to other worldly things but we're on a football forum so its got to be taken into context.

Talking about Higdon I watched a bit of the Eredivisie on SS5 on Monday afternoon, man that is one low quality league, no wonder Higgy scored 15 over there for a relegated side. Stick him up top for Ajax and he would have got 50....

The way I read your original post is:

People are having a go at Diego and that they shouldn't.
Implication is: forum members should not criticise players, ie: Diego/Baxter at all, and you can't seem o understand why they should want to criticise.

Just interested to know what "context" people are supposed to take it?

Just an honest opinion, but you laid yourself open by writing "Some of our fans really bother me sometimes"

I'm not saying it isn't "important" in the context we view it, I just can't understand the notion that people with opposite opinions would ever bother anyone. And don't get me started about people who are embarrassed because of other peoples views . . . . . .

Sounds like Clough is protecting Him putting him out wide.

Any thoughts on those who manage to be ashamed......??

No, it was pointing out that Diego was given lee-way for being played out of position, yet the same wasn't afforded to Baxter last year.

I personally wasn't criticising either player, just that some of our fans hear the name Diego, and the clamber for him to play (based on not seeing him play at all in some cases) and elevate him to another level.

The comments about things being taken in context referred to the message from Grecian, surely that's self explanatory. He said things like this shouldn't bother me as there are more serious things in the world to worry about - which I fully agree with, but I don't believe comments made on a football board should be compared to other worldly goings on.

Darren - you available for hire pal?!

Thing is I never criticised an opinion - I just said some opinions bother me, and they do, therefore I put my opinion forward to be commented on.

Shame the discussion has gone away from the original subject isn't it.

I don't think any young player will be judged on one or two first team games, no matter how good, poor or average. ( look at Reed, who did well mostly)
As Nigel stated, the lad is knocking on the first team squad door for a place on the bench, then starting eleven.

Obviously they all rate him, but if the current first team squad carry on results like the first ten or so games and we're 'up there' then it will be hard to cement that first team place.

If he keeps improving and banging in the goals I'm sure he'll force his way in...

Lets get one thing straight here,if Diego would have got them chances that Porter missed i would have fancied him to take them, and for Cloughy not to give the lad a chance in his preferred position,in the JPT and leave Porter out when it's quite clear Porter isn't in his plans is another strange one to say the least imo.

I suppose what it does tell me is that Diego certainly isn't in Cloughy's plans, otherwise the lad would have got what was required for him, which was a full game in his rightful position, this is all my opinion btw and no hearsay or bullshit from anyone else, apart from myself;)I mean come on,it's the JPT,why not give him a go instead of a player that is already well and truly shite.

some misguided fans , like the moaner in chief Brian the blade, think they have all the answers , just play Diego he is the Hallam Messi , but its not quite that simple ,,,,is it

Diego had 70 minutes , didnt find any space to create a chance porter came close with a few , but was in the right place, which is a start ,
I hope Diegos obvious talent comes to fruition , but theres a time and a place for it , hes recovered from one of footballs worst injuries , like with a lot of what Nigels doing patience is a neccesity not a virtue

1-It's the JPT
2-He didn't play in his right position to create his own chances.Try reading before replying.
3-Incase you can't see it,Porter has been proved to be evidently shite, where as Diego hasn't YET.

so no player thats ever been asked to play wide has ever scored or moved inside
Dyer does ok at swansea
Messi started as a wide player for RONALDINHO, hes doing ok

Kids are getting a game and we are winning. Whether an individual is playing well is an opinion. Whether we won or not is fact.

Diego gets a start which has to aid his development. Assuming that's the idea what's all the fuss about?

However he performed and where he played, it was good to see him and Reed involved to set up Baxter's goal.

Yes, clever little detail, hopefully more to come.

Exactly.

How long has Diego been playing?....How long has Porter been playing?

The 2 players you mention have been playing for a long time and that's part of the point i'm trying to make.Diego might not hit it off in his first game, second game or third game for that matter, but he still needs to be given the chance to prove his worth to the team, especially in his rightful position. You don't see Cloughy playing Porter on the left or right,or even midfield for that matter,so lets get a little perspective on the players in hand.

Just please tell me,how long Porter's had to prove how shit he is before fans like yourself realise that you can only stick up for them for so long?

When Diego's had any where near the length of time Porter's had, will i even start to acknowledge what you're saying on this matter.

One final thing.Has Porter ever scored from playing wide?

I cannot see any reason why he shouldn't get a shot in JPT in his best position. Porter has had more comebacks in his preferred position than Frank Sinatra. Anyone remember TC getting stuck out on the wing for England - criminal waste.

De Girolamo what kind of player are you? Do you prefer to play on the wings or more centrally?
D.G.: It depends on the tactics of the team and the formation we use. I prefer to play behind the forwards. But I can also play on the wing; I feel more comfortable on the right hand side.

The above is from a recent interview with him with an Italian football site: http://vivoazzurro.it/en/news/esclu...-gollini-dallinghilterra-alla-maglia-azzurra/

Left wing is hardly sticking him somewhere he's unhappy with. A player's preferred position may not always be their best too - Jags always used to say he preferred centre-mid for example.

I'm interested though by another bit of the same interview:

Is it true that you rejected offers from both Manchester clubs?

D.G.: To be honest, I never refused them. I was 17 and both teams wanted me. Sheffield told me if I wanted to go I could, but they promised me that I would get more game time if I stayed. So I decided to stay with Sheffield United.

That's the first time I've seen it mentioned that he chose to stay with us rather than take a move to the Man U or Man City - who I wasn't even aware had shown an interest. That would have been in 2012/13.
