De Girolamo scored a hat trick for the U21s today against Brentford. Clough was there watching.
It wouldn't be surprising if he's on the bench at Chesterfield... Although I do think Nige will be waiting for fitness levels to get back to usual standards before he appears. He's doing very well though for the under 21s.

We had both Higdon and Porter on the bench on Saturday, although it was hard to imagine a match situation where we would put both on. De Girolamo is different and will give us another option.

Only just seen this. Absolutely delighted to hear it. It's a useful illustration, though, that it's up to the players to make the manager 'give them a chance'. If they do; he will. His record proves that.

Diego still isn`t at the levels he was, although he is getting there slowly. He had an indifferent game yesterday, possibly our worst player until his first goal. 3 easier goals you will ever see, but hopefully the lad will kick on from here, still the best forward I have ever seen in 30 years of watching the juniors, so I am not anti Diego!!

Other than Connor and reed there was khan and a mixed race lad who I believe got a nasty injury late in the season who promised loads and looked great when I saw them,
Any news on those two?

So he has an indifferent game and still scores an hat-trick,he will do for me.I can't remember the last player we had in our ranks where you thought he could score a brace playing indifferently, never mind an hat-trick,apart from the one obvious the other year.

Aye, I remember him. But I think the old brain cells are going, Wizzy, Keith Edwards played a bit longer ago than 'the other year'

Otis Khan had a great little cameo against Rotherham, and is a talent, but has been average in the U21 fixtures so far, Kler Heh may be the other lad you mention, he is more an U18 player, improving all the time, in & out last season, but getting consistency in his game now.

Think FTPE was talking about Dom Calvert-Lewin. Don't think he's back from injury yet.

Others who seem to be making an impression from the reports are CJ Hamilton (left wing), Jamie McDonough (winger) and Sam Berry (centre half). Anyone got a more informed opinion?

Agreed, they were all easy goals, but the lad did show the knack of being in the right place at the right time. Miroslav Klose built a record breaking career on the back of that.

'keeps has played a blinder there. I'd be hanging my gloves up after that outing if I were him.

That's the first time I've ever seen any footage of U-21 football; Christ I think I'll take any suggestion anyone should be catapulted straight into our first team with the hugest pinch of salt you can find after that showing.

......and you've formed that opinion on what.....50 seconds

Those goals show what can happen if you gamble as a striker and expect a mistake. They might not be the best goals but you still need to get yourself into the position to score them.

Regardless of the length of the clip as a sample, how good are you expecting it to be?

Im not saying theyre terrible, but given the constant clamour for them to be shoe-horned straight into the side, then the standard looked a mile off that. Granted, Im mainly going from the defending of the other side.... ;)

That clip will be worth millions if that goalie goes on to get 100 caps for England.

I love those last two goals. We haven't had a "poacher" since Edwards. You might get a chance from sniffing around that type of situation once every 4 or 5 games, but if you do it's double figures for the season. Drives me mad to see stuff come back off the keeper and our forwards be on their heels and miss the chance.

I fear that we may end up under-utilising Diego. Is he ready? Only one way of finding out. It's not as if we're thinking of chucking him in against, say, Liverpool is it?

Read a decent article today. It's about whether Berahino (West Brom) is 'ready' to make the step up to the full team, or whether to leave him with Southgate's U-21's. Link.

'Will we never learn? England’s next two European Championship qualifiers are walkovers. Hodgson does not need to deprive Southgate of further talent. We either take Under 21 football seriously or we stay as we are: reeling from another tournament failure, wondering what it is that the Germans do right.

The answer is under our noses. They groom their youth. Not by leaving them on the bench as observers as the first team gives another collection of no-marks a spanking; but by providing genuine experience of team growth, of tournament progression — maybe even of winning.

We continue to cite the way the German victory at the European Under 21 Championship in 2009 laid the foundations for their World Cup win in Brazil in 2014, yet when we have the opportunity to pursue that path, amnesia strikes.'

Yes, it's from our old friend Martin Samuel who, when he's not pursuing his pathological hatred of the Blades, actually writes some decent stuff. In this instance, he seems to imply that Berahino is better left where he is, but in Diego's situation, I think it's time to pitch him in. Bergen?
