For those that went how were Harry and Charlie as hosts?

Good hosts, but Harry earned his fee by brown nosing mccabe pretty often.

I was extremely impressed by the event, the organisation and professional nature of it were way above sufc norm!

The presentation of a Scotland cap to Eddie C was fantastic, you could see what it meant to him. Harry Bassett's speech was totally brilliant, as was his swift exit when my refreshed friend asked him who the zone man was.

You mean since the war? We finished 5th in 1961-62 under John Harris and 6th in 1974-75 under Ken Furphy

And 6th in 1946-47 under Teddy Davision :-)

Our top 10 finishes in the top division since the war and the managers concerned are as follows

46-7 6th Davison
61-2 5th Harris
62-3 10th Harris
65-66 9th Harris
66-7 10th Harris
71-2 10th Harris
74-5 6th Furphy
91-2 9th Bassett

Little argument there that Harris is our best ever manager*

* On the basis that we only had a manager from 32-3 (Davison - pre war he saw us only have 2 top division seasons, though we did get to the cup final with him in 1936).

Agreed which makes the best team ever the Bassett side that finished 9th in the modern top flight. Yes?

Yes I know but I was following up Darren’s comment that the teams of yesteryear wouldn’t have enough strength, speed or fitness to compete in “modern” football.
I would say that the “modern” era in terms of fitness, better refuelling habits, sports sciences etc began in the early 90’s and Bassett’s team is our most successful since then.
The counter-argument is that if the 60’s and 70’s players were playing today they would be just as strong and fit as modern players but then you could say that about the 1890’s team also.

Personally, I think that the 1898 team should have won the prize (or some sort of special award) and their grandchildren / great grandchildren could have collected it.
It would show them how much the club still appreciates what they achieved, more so with every passing year of under-achievement.

I think that will be the Redtooth influence. I've attended their events before and they're very good at what they do.

A better voting system (apart from a panel of experts) would be is that all fans nominate the player and indicate the year when the fans started watching the Blades. My vote would be “Tony Currie” and “1970”. My dad’s vote would have been “Jimmy Hagan” and “1939”. At the end of the vote count then they work out how many voters saw Jimmy Hagan play based on the year the year they started following the Blades, if there were about 10 voters that saw him play but 9 of them voted him as the best player then Jimmy Hagan gets 90%, if 100 voters saw Tony Currie play but not Jimmy Hagan and 88 of them voted him as best player (I know some especially Matthew Bell and Shred prefer Woody) then Tony Currie gets 88%, if 1000 voters saw Brian Deane play but not Jimmy Hagan or Tony Currie and 777 of them voted for him then Brian Deane gets 77.7% etc. It is scandalous that Jimmy Hagan didnt get into the top three best ever players and that John Harris didnt get voted to be best ever manager also Nudger Needham captained us to win 3 major trophies

That is because training in 1890s were very basic, 1960s and 1970s trainings were running up and down the terraces (they dont do that nowadays) and then afterwards the players eat fatty foods and drink beer (Woody and Colquhoun were heavy smokers). Nowadays we have much more advanced training facilities, better advice on diet and hardly any footballers smoke!

I know. That's the point I was making.
The 60's and 70's teams had (mostly) better players but the early 90's team were much fitter and stronger.
I reckon the 90's team would therefore beat all our other teams. Ergo they're our "best team ever".

How about a worst team ever?

A football team of the 1890's exposed to the present day training, fitness and dietary methods would hold their own, as would teams of the 1960s/70s so it doesn't really figure.

Crossing the generational gap is pointless. You have to look at what they achieved against their contemporaries. In which case you cannot argue that the winners of the main categories would be as follows:

Best Team: 1897-1902

Best Captain: Ernest 'Nudger' Needham <-------------------------------

Best Manager: John Harris

How about a player of the decades?

My nominations

1890's Fatty Foulke
1900's Nudger Needham
1910's Billy Gilliespie
1920's Harry Johnson
1930's Jimmy Dunne
1940's Jimmy Hagan
1950's Joe Shaw
1960's Mick Jones
1970's Tony Currie
1980's Keith Edwards
1990's Brian Deane
2000's Phil Jagielka
2010's errr.......

Best video = Colin Morris = true gent and what a clever player he was

Worst video = Sean Bean = tosser - great impression of a prick there Sean - Doyle it was not.

Most pickled video = TC = I love you bruv, I mean I really love you like a bruvver - Kevnin saying that they can have another interview "once TC has had the chance to take it all in" ;)

Surprised there wasn't one for Warnock - unless I missed that one.

Impressed that Jags and McCall managed to get there as well as Warnock - after their own games had finished.

That would have been Maguire up until the shenanigans this season, I guess - but he has screwed the pooch on this one for his betamax move.
Agree with your other choices btw

They've added a video of him after being invited up by Bassett. NW makes the point that others have made on here that plenty of the younger crowd won't fully appreciate the work John Harris and people from that era did.

On the still image without starting the video it looks like they're about to do the timewarp (again).

Agree, it should be John Harris.

There was another candidate there that wasn't even short-listed as far as I'm aware.

The one with the highest win ratio in our entire history.

Young Nigel ...................... just saying ;)

You are correct it SHOULD have been John Harris.

Here is a conspiracy theory for you -TACTICAL voting gave it to DB instead of NW - trust me on that one!

Dave Bassett is now 70. He doesnt look that old!

Just about right with that lot. You may get one or two argue for the inclusion of Derek 'Doc' Pace. Personally I'd go for Morris above Edwards, but the goals win the day in the end.

I did not agree with many of the votes but I can only go on what i have seen. I respected the voting of the younger lot!

All the rest is just words in a book.

:)

Reg Brealey was there, unbelievable, one lad on our table asked for his photo and said after three say John St, three, two, one JOHN STREET. Reg took it in good humour.

I suspect most people in the 1890s were stronger than those in the 1990s as they had a much more physical upbringing and exposure to manual labour. A few months of modern diet and training and they would probably make the 90s team look feeble
