What has Donovan done wrong?

He’s certainly looked good when he’s played, but I also understand that he’s not always suited to every game and because of the amount of sprints he does he’s not going to be able to play every min of every game.

But he’s undoubtedly a better player than Chong, he’s not been away on international duty, so it was a really strange one that Chong started against Lincoln

I also didn’t feel that the players have the same confidence in Chong as they do in Donovan

Donovan has to be first choice ahead of Chong for the games were not backs to the wall

I think Donovan offers more defensively than Chong as he works hard in ball recovery and is fast at nicking the ball back - albeit both are weak and ill disciplined/out of position without the ball.
How BBD gets games ahead of Donovan is perplexing

Ball recovery and turning defence into attack quickly is certainly where he excels

Theres been a very small number of times that Donovan has not been smart with his passes when we’ve been in our defensive third. It’s certainly not enough to highlight it as a weakness.

I think he’s probably not the player you want in defence when we’re defending in a tight defence/ midfield formation, but he’s the player you want as soon as we win the ball

I'd be recalling Donovan if he was my player as he is not getting the game time he deserves, got to be a better bet than BBD who went missing the whole game at Portsmouth. Still Wilder doesn't like young players with skill and pace.

But Swiss, in backs to the wall games I'd rather leave Donovan up front on his own for the outball. We only seem to go long most of the time anyway so having his pace chasing a defender down allows us to get up the pitch so we're not sat on Cooper's lap all the time.

It's a massive black mark against Wilder that Donovan and Oné aren't properly featuring. Getting pretty sick or him now.
Eh?
One was injured for the first 2 months of the season…. And then he came off the bench on sat

Donovan has certainly featured he just doesn’t play every game, rightly so in some cases but not all

The more games he plays the more he learns and the bigger the benefit to us.
He can dribble, create and cross. At times he makes mistakes. It's not as if the rest of our team are passing masters, they make mistakes too. For a small young lad he can really whack a ball when shooting.

For a wide player, his tackling is superb. He gets stuck in and doesn't seem to lose confidence or hide when things go wrong. A great loan for us if we play him regularly. I fear that Wilder doesn't see it the same way.

What I don't understand is why Wilder decided to change to 442 and sign Donovan for the right wing, but spend all summer chasing Souttar and waiting for Phillips instead of recruiting a left winger too. Donovan is the victim of this.

If it meant selling Peck to fund three permanent signings then I could live with that.
Owners will just pocket it

He'd be tailor made for the Duffy role, drifting across, drawing fouls, shooting etc. If only we'd be brave enough to play 3412 at home. Sometimes.

In my opinion, we should be trying to build an attacking game around Oné and Donovan.
Instead, we persist with BBD and Cannon.

Wilder's default is to fallback on "experienced senior players," even when they're mostly experienced in failure.

This season is going to be a drag, it would be nice to have something to be excited about. Seriki and Brooks (and to a lesser extent, Peck) provided that last season.
This season, there's very little to get behind.

He comes from a club that is particularly good at fitness and conditioning. That certainly isn’t a reason for him not to have had far more minutes than he’s had even if he can’t do 90 minutes in every game. Fitness might well be an issue for every other signing this summer, but not in Donovan’s case. Controversial perhaps, but maybe the answer is that Wilder is simply getting it wrong.

I think we should be starting Donovan every game for a while and see how he does. We are going to become a very unatractive club for Premier League clubs to send players to soon, unless they are old and disabled.

Nope, One and Seriki have been dropped and I want Wilder sacking because of it

Could we send Shackleton to Brentford? He'd be ready for the last match of the season.

I like wilder but Donovan has been completely mismanaged. His head will have gone when he didn’t even kick a ball v wolves, it told fans and players that this season we are guna play for draws against the bigger teams in the division. He was electric before that game and now he’s probably wondering what the hell is going on when he’s seeing Diaz and Chong get in ahead of him. He’ll be begging to leave in Jan and who would blame him, I hope for his sake he finds a club that plays him because his work rate and defensive work is great.

I'm not a wilder out campaigner but even I find it baffling he is now never starting.

He's got quality unpredictability and pace and trickery. I could live with him being in and out. But he's just being benched all the time is utterly baffling. Especially when BBD isn't pulling any trees up.
