I always think wages in football spark the same debate everyone seems convinced that everyone else is overpaid. It’s a universal theme.

Bettis earning around £160k a year roughly £3,100 a week to run a Championship club that’s spent most of its recent history in the top six or in the Premier League feels pretty much in line with what you’d expect for that level of responsibility.

If not then what is the going rate in football for someone effectively acting as the owners’ day‑to‑day operator.

And let’s be honest: football is a completely distorted industry when it comes to pay. Players earn absurd money, managers earn absurd money.

So why would the CEO role be any different? His job is to run the entire club the scale, pressure and scrutiny are nothing like a normal business.

Most businesses you have the expectation of that organisation - this one you have the expectations of 50,000-60,000 worldwide fans & owners

At this time the club needs a CEO more than ever. The owners are both clueless and absent. Someone needs to drive the organisation forward - it may not be his job to write the strategy, but it is the CEO's job to make sure there is one. Good CEOs manage owners/shareholders as much as they manage their direct reports and, of course, good owners recognise that they need competent professionals to run their businesses. Bettis describes himself as 'just an accountant' and many on here seem to think he is no more than an errand boy for the owners, at best a chief admin office who pays the immediate bills and keeps the lights on. Someone said that his brief is too wide - he negotiates the multi-million pound transfers and ensures the toilets are clean. The glib answer to that is that he doesn't make much of a fist of either. The real answer is that he shouldn't be doing either of those things, but it the CEO's job to ensure that there is a proper structure in place to ensure that both of those things are done well. It is his job to make sure that our recruitment team is suitably staffed to do its job, and that the fitness and conditioning team is up to scratch. It is his job to maximise our income by increasing ticket sales in both the short and long term, making the very best use of the footprint of Bramall Lane to increase revenue, to maximise the income from catering, the club shop etc. I would argue that spending more money on our management structure would be a wise investment and bring long term benefits. I'd bring in a stronger CEO to bring some dynamism, a Director of Football to oversee the technical side and maybe keep Bettis as a Director of Finance.

Not at all. You quoted a salary range from £85k to £155k and stated that was a "fraction of what we're paying Bettis".
Don't be presenting his own facts against him as a counter argument!! He might drop his pitchfork or froth even more across his keyboard.

Bettis is this week's pantomime villain, let them have their fun. Those of us who live in the real grown up world know the complications of running a c£80m business but don't let that get in the way of their fun....

Maybe just me but I think 160k is less than I expected for the CEO of a Championship football club. Football finances are so distorted compared to other industries I thought he’d get paid a fair bit more.
Not really. There is financial distortion on the football side of a club certainly, but many of the people behind the scenes are paid less than they could earn in similar roles outside of football.

Where has the £160k figure come from?
I'd have guessed Bettis to be on a package worth double that... and Wilder to be on around £550k?

Fair enough. I was comparing it to other private sector CEOs and similar roles so that makes sense.

Apologies. I think that seems quite modest for the role.
Is that just his salary? I'd guess he gets a sizeable salary maybe..
Well the average salary or total renunciation is around 260k in the champ so maybe it's on top of his salary

Directors Emoluments of £151k (plus pension contributions £9k) include salary. However he wasn’t an appointed as a director according to Companies House until March 2025.(Announced on the OS 20th March 2025)

Only remuneration earned from the precise date they were appointed as a director through to the end of the financial year is reported in the directors' emoluments disclosure. This represents their compensation for "qualifying services" as a director of the company.

It could of course be a reporting error.

It’s only his remuneration for SUFC ltd. I need to go through the rest of the companies he’s a board member for.

It’s not necessarily his only benefit either.

Then look at the Blades Leisure Limited accounts which show that’s it for the group. *

Emoluments should include all income including benefits in kind.

* then sit down before you read post #826…….

It would be a very reasonable salary if it is a genuine CEO role, as is the case in most businesses, certainly quoted businesses, Privately financed or even a higher-level CEO role in the public sector. It does, however, strike me that his is less of a CEO role and more of a COO one.

What progress are we seeing this season then? And what makes you think the club will be in a position, or willing, "to go for it" next season!?

The club is going backwards
not so much on the pitch this season for obvious reasons of losing parachute payments

Sumat about that reads to me as if they are loving this. I think they want this to go down well with Blades and to communicate some sort of loyalty to the fanbase. In reality it just makes me want to tell them fuck off.
To be fair to staton he's a full weight pig ,so he's going to stir the pot .I wouldn't have him anywhere near the club .

Time for a new image to replace Samuels I think.
