I think that's a genuine cry of frustration, but give it 10 minutes and a few will be along to blame CW.

Not really relevant when they have 23 first-team players left training in Athens.
 
I was thinking about this in the summer as well last year and this year but the Panathinaikos season also started early as they had to go through the European qualifiers

Ideal world we’d do it in the summer or this 3 week break but we’re on different schedules
 
A charity pre-season friendly in George’s name, funds going to charity’s that support children who lose a parent early in life, should have been the easiest thing in the world to arrange between these two clubs it would sell out in a day.

Unfortunately we have owners who don’t give the remotest shite.

They had already played multiple competitive games before we even flew out to Germany.
 
Do you not think Panithanikos dont actually give a shit about playing us in a testimonial? If they did it would have happened by now. Their pre season friendlies this season were v Ajax, Grasshopers and Rapid Vienna, they probably dont want to play a second tier English team.

So they have a squad of 24 by your maths. Might want to check that again.

It’s as much about who plays as it is who wins - naff all.

It’s about a game in his memory between his most recent club and the club he had a huge affiliation with. With fans of both clubs able to celebrate his life and career. And raising money for whoever his wife and family see fit.
 
I feel like when it became obvious that the Panathinaikos friendly was never going to materialise, we should’ve (and still could) arranged a friendly with MK Dons. It would be a more fitting tribute anyway in my opinion. George only made a handful of appearances for Panathinaikos. MK Dons were his local team, he came through their academy and made over 100 appearances for them over 8 years (with a lot of loan spells). Perhaps an MK Dons XI v Blades XI with the players from each respective club that George was closest with. That means more than just the current blades team playing the current Panathinaikos team.

Exactly. They were playing friendlies which suited their upcoming qualifiers for Europe.

Is a Helleniscist a scholar of Ancient Greece?

Would certainly be a new accusation to level at CW. Can certainly see Danny Hall planting a question for him about the Parthenon Marbles at the next presser.
 
I feel like, not being harsh on them, that Panathinaikos probably don't view it in the way we do. He only played for them for a few months, and made only 4 appearances (per wikipedia).

We see him as a club legend because of the number of games he played, and the period of unprecedented (relative) success in the club's modern history that he was a huge part of. I'm sure their fans were saddened by his tragic and untimely death, and the club certainly did well by paying out his contract to his family, but for them that is probably a closed book. Imagine if someone like Axel Smeets had died while playing for us? I don't think United would be asking his former club, 2 years later, for a friendly game in his memory.

I'm sorry if this sounds crass or uncaring. That's not my intention. I was genuinely heartbroken when George died, he's part of my favourite Blades squad of all time, and will forever be a player I remember extremely fondly. But I can understand why, from their point of view, Panathinaikos might see playing us in a charity game as a low priority.

I have been to a public mid season friendly game but that was 30ish years ago. They aren't common place.

"Bounce games" are and are done behind closed doors which is what we have with Hull and others occasionally during the season

I think SUFC handled the tributes to GB really well, as did the players and management. It may be that attempts were made to put a memorial game on but it wasn’t possible for some reason.

I’d like to see a lasting memorial at Bramall Lane but the moment has been and gone for a match, in my opinion.
 
Jeez, it’s hard enough having to watch that shower of shite at the lane atm, never mind following them to the other end of the med.

It’s not new or unique. I’ve whinged about how backwards the club is with certain things like friendlies for years. Seeing the success at Bochum they’ll hopefully get better. Won’t hold my breath.

Before you fly off the handle, read a few seemingly innocent threads, and see how long it takes before the first anti Wilder stuff appears.

I accept he's not doing it this year, but some of the vitriol is totally over the top. Just about every thread descends into a diatribe about Wilder.
