And how many different board members have we had in that 30 year period? Is there some sort of conspiracy to upset Sheffield United supporters or something? Do you have to swear some sort of oath when you become a director? Or maybe, just maybe, you're being a bit silly and overreacting somewhat.

When was the last Board of directors at SUFC who we would consider have successfully delivered on their promise to support the manager substantially in the transfer market ?

And how many times have we heard the "bad luck" story ?

Most of our Chairmen have been on the run from the authorities, disappeared, changed gender, or been removed in disgrace in the last 30 years.

Our long suffering supporters deserve soooo much better imho !!

Jesus fucking Christ. We sign 11 players and people are moaning that we didn't panic buy for someone on deadline day.

A lot of players will now be available on loan deals following their clubs big transfer activity.

Chill out peeps!

Nobody is advocating a panic buy, however, you don't need to be a rocket scientist to see that we have very few goals in this squad ( as it stands) and IF we have realistic ambition to achieve automatic promotion, we NEED a quality ( for this division ) strong pacey striker to score 20+ goals or it will NOT happen.

That doesn't mean we need to panic buy, nor do we need to splash 7 figures in this league, but we do need a consistent regular scorer which we do not have and this will bite us in the arse this season.

The last time we supported our manager was the season we won Div 4

1996 and 1997 under Kendall's management also Spackman signed big name players

"1996 and 1997 under Kendall's management also Spackman signed big name players"

They gave Warnock decent backing in summer 2005 and an appropriate one to this year (if the board would have bothered to back Clough), was summer 1989, when Bassett spent very wisely with what for United was decent sums of money for the time.

Perhaps not including Bryan Robson in any list of "managers" is accurate, but we backed that twat to the hilt. And Blackwell handed out some enormous wages.

Indeed, Bassett spent £175K on Mark Morris (he became our record signings) plus £85K on Colin Hill and around £50K each on Julian Winter and David Barnes. A summer spend of £360K would probably only have previously been matched by the roughly similar sum Haslam spent on Sabella, Matthews and Finnieston in the summer of 78. Bassett spent rather more wisely than Haslam.

He did have to put some money in. That was in Sept 91. Mind you, we did finish 9th in the top tier that season and beat Wednesday twice (thus depriving them of the league title), so it was not all bad...

I think most of us would have liked to have seen a few new faces come in before deadline day, however after my initial disappointment I don't feel too bad this time. The reason?, after a pretty low key start to the season, we seem to be pulling ourselves together. The team went to PNE and I expected a good pasting to set us back again, but no we got a good point and not only that took the game to them and could have won. Secondly, reading the reports from people attending I think we are slowly starting to see some half decent performances from the likes of Basham which was pleasing. The third point is Wallace, who if he can only stay injury free can become a match winner for us, we have seen so little of him since he arrived at the Lane that seeing him now playing is like having a new signing. The forward line is still a concern and obviously needs addressing if we are to realistically push for promotion, but while ever Baxter is finding the net at the moment .....

Normally pretty positive but today has been a major let down. Didn't want or expect millions to be splashed for the sake of it but the team needs strengthening, Clough himself has admitted as much, yet despite our apparent resources we've come up with nothing.

This is exactly the point that posters on various websites overlook.
We have signed 11 players and lost our best one. The manager says we need some real quality in two or three areas so a club with even a reasonable amount of investment should and would back him.
If he wants three new players and has them targeted why do we lose out on all three ?
Surely raising the offer on his preferred two players would be better than not signing any of them.
It's all bullshit, they always get found out for spinning bullshit so why they all don't just STFU I'll never know,

Yep - that's the point. If we had a bit of quality and pace up front we would have won at Preston.
Wallace is not so much of a match winner in my mind but a fit Wallace will make us incredibly tough to break down and will get the momentum going forward by initiating our attacking movement as he breaks up play from the opposition - what we need is a finisher. Predatory, sharp, brave, quick thinking and no slouch over 5-10 yards. That's my disappointment around the personnel that we have brought in - it's the key element and we still have not addressed it - even though it's been stuffing a shitty finger up our collective noses for months. Just hoping and praying we have not bet our wad on an upcoming release date :o

Clough refuses to pay over the odds for players United have set a maximum value on each player, thats why Freeman didnt come if their clubs will not sell them for that we move on. This is one of the problems with the Transfer Window clubs put their valuations up near the end of the window hoping some club that is desperate will pay their inflated valuation

You probably know a bit more about Wallace Kenilworth, as I have only seen a few minutes of him but was impressed with what I saw. Re you last line, I rather think we have, would like to think the Hunt story was true though.

Anything that is considered an asset has a higher than book value when it comes to sale.
It's called demand.
Demand for quality is always there for prestige cars, prestige houses, prestige clothes, prestige everything and the price is not set in stone.
Not paying an inflated price for something that is of obvious quality is stupid if you have the money and you want it. Which lends me to believe that the "quality three" were complete lies spun out by the board through Clough who must be getting as sick and tired of hearing the bullshit as almost all of the fans are.

If we had serious offers on three players and were willing to pay good money for them why did we not pay an inflated price for one of them, or two of them. We lost all three which means they never existed.

We are not shopping in the prestige end of the market have you forgotten we are L1 prestige and quality will not drop down to our level the prestige end of the market may have a higher than book value but football is littered with very expensive flops its a very different market than cars houses etc etc.
How many times do you need this explaining to you we will not pay inflated prices for players we are not going to throw money away and because you dont understand this its all a lie and means the players or the bids never existed

Oh dear - the fourth time I've had to say bollocks this morning...

Oh dear, why does anyone think that Clough would lie, or even be economical with the truth, about attempting to sign a player? It's mind-boggling to imagine why anyone could conceive of NC behaving in a way that would inevitably come back to bite his arse?

The fact that JJBlade's post seriously considers our manager a liar is shaming. What do you think could be gained by Clough or the club mentioning that we were pursuing three players? What type of intrigue does the poster's imagination find that inspiring to even consider suggesting that Clough would lie to us? From day one he's adopted the most straightforward approach there is, to speak plainly, tell us how things are, and never deviate from this.

So according to this poster we're now chasing players who are non-existent? Did it ever occur to you that there might have been other reasons why these players were unavailable? For christ's sake, get a grip and stop seeing conspiracies where they don't exist.

Easily explained, the Christ you appear to hold in some regard doesn't have the same importance to myself. I wondered how long it might take you to pounce, does this mean that you're now officially my stalker?
Whoosh It took you less than a minute ;)

Interesting. I've got a bridge to sell if you're interested..?

In the NFL they grade each teams draft picks. So how does everyone think we did?

B- for me

Not the strategy I would have gone with, however we have a strong squad which will get better as the games have gone along. Should be there or there abouts.

Don't think Clough is a liar, I think our boardroom are liars.
If Clough had a certain amount of cash and wanted three players but had to settle for buying two he would have bought his two preferred targets and paid a bit more for each with what he saved on the third player. Anybody with half a brain would have done. It's his job on the line if we fall short.
The board just pulled the rug out from under him when he foolishly believed them and made a couple of enquiries.
