I've been watching United for 55 years, during that time our average position has been upper/mid table championship.
We currently sit 14th in that table, though judging by some of the fans negativity we should be elsewhere.

Maybe pollster should conduct a poll asking where our fans think we belong?

58 years for me, although it’s not a contest. I know exactly what our expectations should be. It’s not the position in the table that’s the issue for me, it’s the horrible, turgid shite we are having to watch. I certainly enjoyed the L1 promotion season (and the 4th division one as well, come to that) far more than I am likely to enjoy this season. And there is no excuse for the awful quality of the current ponderous squad given the amount of money that has gone through the club in the last seven years. Dreadful mismanagement from top to bottom, and we are going backwards.

I think this club is in a rut. Tired, going through the motions and cliched.

We are in a bit of a rut, but hopefully can stay steady in the championship. Some wrong moves now could see us doing a lot worse, esp if the -12 does prove to be more than the hype we hope it is.

Whilst we have consistently been in the Championship, with brief, painful forays into the lower leagues, people shouldn't be judged for wanting more.

Especially after having the chances to become a stable Prem side throughout the years and then squandering them. Then you have the likes or Brentford, Bournemouth and Brighton who used to be way smaller than us.

I'd even take being in the top flight for just five seasons before dropping down, just having a few good stable seasons at the top to reminisce on would be nice.

They really aren’t. The vast majority of clubs are realistic about their ceiling.

I'd argue most teams simply dream of getting promoted to the league above, no matter where they are in the pyramid.

A league two fan might have some distant daydream of being in the prem, but they have the more realistic dreams of simple progression upwards.

Exactly. I would imagine Rochdale would love to stabilise in L1 for a few seasons. I certainly don’t expect us to ever consolidate in the EPL top 6 (although we can all dream) but I would dearly like a team I could actually enjoy watching. And I don’t think that’s a particularly big ask.

Can't quite put my finger on why it is we retreat so badly when we score. Is it fitness? Is it lack of emotional discipline, mental fortitude? Fear? Pusiness?

The statistical odds though are.

Winning the lottery, 45 million to one, though this does not prevent people spending thousands over their lifetime.

Since dropping out of the PL under Neil Warnock United had 8 full time managers who only took us in one (sic) direction until Chris Wilder was appointed.

Our noisy neighbours have appointed 9 full time managers in the last ten years who have only taken them in one direction.

So a total of 17 failed managers, 19 if you include Selles and Jocanovic.

So looking at this purely in statistical terms what are the odds that swapping Wilder will progress the club?

Still every football club needs a scapegoat and Chris wilder is it for some of our fans.

He got 100 points in League 1- messiah, build the statue, no criticism, win lose or draw.
He got 92 points 2 seasons ago- not good enough get him out, dinosaur etc.

So is the difference really only 8 points from messiah, to pariah (in a more difficult division).

Or is the difference the level of entitlement of some of the fanbase. Wilder now gets criticised even when we win.

Without Wilder we may never have seen 9th place in the PL and may have spent the last 10 years stuck in League 1.

I don’t think he’s without his faults, but even contemplating changing a manager with the current mess off the field is just complete nonsense.

Agreed. But we can also look at the state of the squad and the style of football and be unhappy about them.

Yeah a new manager isn't a bad idea, it's the fact we had just lost in the play off final and instead of going for someone who could take us to the next level, we went with someone who could take us to the level below.

Anyway, talk of a new manager is pointless whilst everything is on fire in the background. Stability is needed above all else right now.
