I was certain it was 2-3-5 with Eddie dropping deep between the two left and right full backs augmented by Flynn when needed to for the four with Hockey being the midfield blocker, Currie and Salmons then receiving off Flynn or Hockey and the two wingers (and Gil Reece) basically getting chalkdust on their boots. But when everyone lined up at kick off it was 2-3-5.

I can't recall us ever setting up with a 4-4-2 until Haslam. Happy to be corrected.

The 2-3-5 formation started to go out of fashion after the Hungarians thrashed England 6-3 in 1953. 4-3-3 grew in popularity after England won the 1966 World Cup. There weren't any teams playing 2-3-5 in the 1970s.

So we played 4-3-3?

I'll see if I have that programme - it may have been a Shoot or summat where I am sure I saw that lineup.

Like I say, I get that Eddie C was effectively the centreback guvnor and Flynn was effectively a deep defensive midfielder in my eyes. You see Kalvin Philips doing exactly the same thing in the Blackburn game the other day, dropping into the gaps at the back to add strength. When we were defending both Eddie and Flynn would 'mark' their CF and attackers Badger and Hemsley were wide cross stoppers and Hockey would just kick people up in the air.

Flynn as a dedicated CB in a 4-3-3? Never saw that TBH.

And despite your encyclopaedic knowledge of all things Blades, I can confirm I am not him.

From what I recall he used to his own Deadbat version of sweary writeups and get in eternal arguments that pissed a lot of posters off.

Any similarities of my opinion of John Flynn and the United of old are simply coincidental and circumstantial. It's possible I am the same timestamp as he is and watched much of the football back in the day, and looking at that example, possibly so. I did like John Flynn. He was an honest grafter who was never afraid of (what I saw) of the 'half-back' role, breaking up play and linking with Salmons and Currie, getting his feet in a tackle and running 90 minutes into his shirt. I watched the Blades v Spurs 2-2 draw recently and only saw him at the back with big Eddie C near the end when (Gilzean, was it?) scored the late equaliser.

I would recommend you stay away from building .xls's of people's character traits on here and stick to United facts, though Silent. You might end up aligning Bert with Fallowfield or some other WUM.

Flynn has always played in central defence and very occasionally at left back, never have known him being a midfielder.

Ok Silent. I challenge you on this. I believe on one occasion in a goal drought Flynn was tried up front. It didn’t work.

Wasn't it when Billy D was injured (a rare occurrence back then because defences leaned on him a lot but he just took it)?

Flynny got a few goals for us in his seven or eight years didn't he?

Yes Franks played up front for 2 games in March 1974 also for a few games in Sept 1978.

Yes, Flynn scored 8 league goals for us, most of them were heading in Woody's corners.

Where BBD was totally wasted on the left
and Arblaster was thought to be a right sided attacker that BBD could be
NOT the sensible alternative to try to replace outstanding wing back Seriki

What was REALLY WIERD
was that for five minutes
the consistently immobile Choudhury
with the similar immobile Ayew for the rest of the time
RIPPED WOLVES APART down the right
until Choudhury was taken off and Ayew thought he had done enough
and downed tools - or literally sat down.
It was a glimpse into some other dimension where they were players
and Wilder knew what the **** he was doing!

JUST SHOWS WHAT A COMPETENT MANAGER COULD BE DOING
