Nail/head

We can 'trust in Nigel' all we want, but it's like trusting in a mechanic to fix your car when he is armed with a double ended dildo, six Bensons, a bucket of warm diahorrea and a fishing rod.

Mark my words, if this lot aren't in the top six by Xmas and are playing Weir football, he'll walk.

Why on earth would we be playing weir football by Xmas, he's never had us playing like that yet. Good analogy with the mechanic but it really isn't all that bad, just disappointing

Sounds like bids were made earlier for 3 players today but it hasn't worked out at all, very annoying. Hopefully we will have a change of fortunes in the loan market. Ah well, least we've picked up abit of form

Apparently if you put in a so called deal sheet to the FA or whoever before 11 o'clock, you've got till 1 am.to finalise the deal. There is still hope guys.

We wouldn't be so bothered if some players had actually carried on their form from last season, or if Higdon offered anywhere near the threat we thought he might. Some people need to realise we have made our signings, and we just have to see if they are up to the job. If not, we can reassess in January.

I can't say I'm happy with the club's business this window, but if you are getting cross now and not before then you are kidding yourselves - it was already done. 11 signings or whatever it was, and the expectation that players who showed promise last year would kick on. It's the latter not happening (see Flynn, Murphy, Scougall) that's really hurting us.

Jesus. There's some dummies been spat here tonight. I hope you're all big enough to pick them up and put them back in again when we lift the League One trophy.

By the time we lift the trophy I don't think the internet's archives will stretch back long enough for anyone to bring this thread up.

If we fluke promotion with the bang average squad we have I will be surprised and delighted in equal measure.

Normally pretty positive but today has been a major let down. Didn't want or expect millions to be splashed for the sake of it but the team needs strengthening, Clough himself has admitted as much, yet despite our apparent resources we've come up with nothing.

Maybe the players we were after waited to see if any one higher up came in for them? If they didn't we could possibly now move to get them in on loan till January, if we do get a couple in on loan and they are the quality that beard and coady was then I'd be quite happy. Also does it now look more likely we could get a striker in October maybe get him fit for the Xmas period or end if season run in?

Sheffield United's attempts to bring in last minute additions to the playing squad ahead of the transfer window closing have been rejected.

Nigel Clough, who publicly stated that United were chasing a number of targets, has confirmed that subsequent offers have been rebuffed.

The Blades manager said: "We've been working hard to improve the squad and, with the help of the board, have made substantial bids for players. Unfortunately, our targets are valued by their current clubs, hence the bids being rejected.

"The players we highlighted would have undoubtedly improved the squad, however, we didn't want to spend the Club's money on others, who would have not necessarily made us stronger. We already have a talented squad, which we hope is capable of challenging for promotion from this division.

"We pushed right until the deadline, making multiple bids, but the players we wanted are appreciated by their respective clubs."

Clough added: "We have brought in 11 players over the summer and the closing of the transfer window is not the end of our search for players. We'll be exploring the loan market from next week with the aim of adding depth to the impressive squad we already have."

This is the statement from Clough on the official site.

At the moment, we aren't exactly pulling up any trees, given the magnitude of the club and it's structural capacity and support base.

The SUFC 1-2 BCFC told me enough of what I suspected - we still need reinforcement and betterness in many areas of the field. Many said BCFC were possible champions, which was bollocks. They played poor football all game and gave the ball away cheaply and should never had had those two goals. Okay - we have beaten Pbro away and scraped an enjoyable win at WHU, but in honesty, can anyone fairly say we had them worried by our attackers? Has anyone feared our attackers? In fact, how many goals have our attack (not Baxter - he is an attacking midfielder) actually scored?

We are heading for a struggle. We can't score goals.

I'm just going to make a wild guess, and suggest that Clough didn't actually say that.

What the fuck is wrong with this club?

We need a striker - maybe two and ship out Porter on loan to Oughtibridge Girl Guides

We possibly need a decent midfielder to bring on the current group and sit and hold

We definitely need a Maguire replacement who is strong in the challenge and reads the game well.

And are we a bit thin if Howard gets injured/suspended?

Cheers 'game changing investment' dickheads.

Another struggle ensues. I just hope Cluff stays with us.

Its like that Gregory Peck film about the bloke with the million pound note, he cant spend the bugger anywhere.

Why say they are after targets - all it breeds is disappointment !
We have needed a striker for three seasons yet we still can't sign one ! Hopefully Higdon and McNulty can do the business although the signs are not too promising !

I believe that was written two weeks ago :o

I don't understand how we can bid for these players and they don't sign. They have agents don't they? You can't keep them! Everyone knows that!

Not in the least bit surprised. Houso - why do you do it to yourself every year?

On target for 46 goals and 7th again if Howard keeps playing well.

I would've thought we could have increased the bids we put in what with us saving money now not having to pay for shit roll at the lane due to the prince's business empire! Or is the prince's joint ownership and money turning out to be a load of what ends up on the bog roll?

Just seen that Wellbeck went for 16 Million! Jesus, the money is daft! Not excusing United for not getting any of our targets, but when you seen that sort of deal you have to question what clubs are charging.

NC has just learned what the supporters of SUFC have known for 30 years.

That is that the board of SUFC are great at not delivering on their support !!!

And how many different board members have we had in that 30 year period? Is there some sort of conspiracy to upset Sheffield United supporters or something? Do you have to swear some sort of oath when you become a director? Or maybe, just maybe, you're being a bit silly and overreacting somewhat.

We signed quite a few players before the deadline. One of our busiest ever, I think? The window didn't open this morning you know.

You’re right we did and I think we certainly have some very solid players and some match winners in the team/ squad now like Murphy, Flynn, JCR, Jose, Scougall. I’m looking forward to seeing Wallace and some of the younger lads like Reed, Diego come through and play some part up to Christmas. My only disappointment, however is that Clough was clearly trying to bring in some additional faces and for whatever reason, on the last day of a very busy summer, we fail to get the players we want. I’m not about to speculate on why, but lets hope now that we can pick up some decent loanees until January.

After yesterday there are a number of clubs who did a lot of business, for example Hull City, QPR . Bruce now has the job of reshaping his squad and he has far too many players in midfield and up front. Various other clubs will set about trimming their squads too.

In this situation Championship clubs will get first pick but then there will be an overflow from them.

It is entirely possible that two or three loan signings rather than the intended permanent signings will actually strengthen our squad more in the short term; the incoming loan players could easily be of a different calibre to the intended targets.

Clough has to decide whether he imports season long loan deals only or maybe better players only available until January. There will be loads of options and the signs are that money is available. The "International Break" is very timely for Clough do do the business. Permanent deals can always still be done with a 4 month loan deal plus an agreed January transfer.

I am not saying this is what Clough wanted, it clearly is not. However, it just might turn out for the best in the short term. Much depends on Nigel and Simon's contact network in the game. As someone said above, last seasons loans were mostly quality, but what strikes me is that the "ex-Derby " connections will dry up before long if they haven't already. The spat with Derby over Freeman was unfortunate.

As for targets, how about Patterson or Cox at Forest.
