MOTD Pain

It’s worth remembering that the sale of DCL allowed us to sign JOC, Clarke, Fleck and Duffy. Players move on for various reasons. We could have held onto Ndiaye and Berge but both had only 1 year left on their contracts and they could have left for nothing, the same as Hamer. Players like Bogle wanted to leave so should the club keep unhappy players? I don’t think so.

Ifs, buts and maybes. Better to enjoy motd for the quality football than worry about that fella.

We still have a team in red and white to support, who knows, we could still come good this season.

There is a loooonnngggg way to go for everyone this season.

Ampadu and McAtee could’ve been players we could’ve bought if the club had any ambition/foresight. Why is it good if we develop players for other clubs? The only thing we want out of a loan is for that player to bring us success in the short term, we failed to go up with Gibbs-White but managed to net £40m for wolves, how is that successful for us? We absolutely did not get a significant fee for Calvert-Lewin, I actually remember a coach at Everton taking the piss out of how little they actually paid for him. Bogle is currently in his prime for Leeds in the prem and we signed him as a youngster but still managed to not make money on him 🤣.

Honesty if you spin things constantly to make it look like everything’s ok, then nothing will ever improve.
If we develop loanees, clubs are more likely to send their talented youngsters to us. That we manage to regularly pick out talented youngest that add to our squad is a good thing. MGW and McAtee helped us out loads in the seasons they played for us, they were undoubtedly positive signings.

We have no idea whether Man City were prepared to sell McAtee in the only season we were in a position to realistic afford him or what the fee would've been. Yes, it's a shame our owners can't compete at PL level, but that doesn't turn McAtee's loans into a negative. They were good signings both times.

We got more than a million for DCL which helped fund a much needed squad overhaul that eventually led to our meteoric rise. The money that was reinvested was far more valuable than DCL would have been that season. Selling players to reinvest is what good clubs do.

All teams run into situations with players at the end of their contracts, not just us.

There are plenty of reasons to be negative at the moment regarding United, but your OP is just thoughtless doomerism.

Without trying to sound too much of a 'happy clapper' type and taking the positive approach (as much as possible)- we can all moan about what might have been but what the facts are is that we've had all these names through the door playing for us in recent times.

There's fairly large time scale for all the players mentioned (DCL sold about 10 years ago or so) but we manage to get either good quality young loans into the club and develop them as well as bringing young talent through which is a massive positive.

The biggest gripe I have is that we never seem to grow as a club after profiting off these player sales. Loans return- fair enough, most would command a massive fee from premier league clubs but young players (calvert lewin, osula, andre brooks even Ndiaye) all were sold 'just' before peak value in my opinion OR, this is the kicker, sold to fund other shite we bring in.

We've had enough decent players to build the club up but mismanagement has kept us bobbin around in the same place.

McAtee loan was positive yeah because he got us promoted but ultimately the Gibbs-White loan did nothing for the club, whilst he was excellent yes it did nothing for us, how can that even be argued? I just made a comment on how watching match of the day reminded me that we have thrown away a lot of talent over the years, which we have.

I think what we brought in when players have left(eg Calvert Lewin and David Brooks) were far from “other shite”

Finishing higher up the table is a good thing, whether you get promoted or not. I'm happy I got to watch MGW play for us, he's an exciting player that did plenty for us in his loan.

He benefitted the club financially, given we finished higher up the table than we would've done without him (plus extra money for the play off fixtures). He contributed towards an incredible run which made us look like promotion contenders and so desirable to players like McAtee and Doyle in the summer window. He scored great goals, did inventive bits of skill and played with passion, which undoubtedly made going to watch the football better for Blades fans.

It's bizarre to be negative about his loan spell and it was impossible to sign him permanently.

Begs the question of why do players that leave here seem to play better elsewhere ?
Is it the way we set up and play ?
Too rigid and no flexibility in the system ?
Players given strict instructions ?
Over thinking and more worried about the opposition ?
Or they just can't be arsed when here ?
You’ve got 5 right which does lead on to getting 6 right.

And it’s true.

No doubt we'll sell Ryan Oné cheap.
Looking at our decisions on players , most of this forum could run the club better than any of those in charge over the last 6 years.
Pure incompetence which pains the heart.
Surely One is better than Cannon so, why do we play Cannon. If he is better and is not getting a game he will be off. We should get rid of Cannon asap!!

I would argue that we paid him more than we brought in. I enjoyed watching him too and it was exciting, but ultimately he was brought in to get us back to the premiership, which he did not after he missed a penalty in a playoff game, therefore it wasn’t a successful loan, as he didn’t do that he came here to do.

Had we not brought him in, we'd have paid just as much or more for someone else and they would have very likely been worse. It was unquestionably a successful loan, this is like saying Bruno Fernandes hasn't been a successful signing for Man U because they've not won the PL since signing him, mental.

Comes down to definition of successful then! I see success as completing the objective. He did well at United yes, but fell short ultimately.

This. And look how much Forest paid for him when they went up. Would've been a polarizing discussion on here.

I think these are all the ex blades (permanent and loans) that featured in PL match day squads this weekend, most got on the pitch:

GK - Hendo - Palace
RB - Bogle - Leeds
CB - Egan - Hull
CB - Maguire - Man U
LB - Ampadu - Leeds
RM - Ndiaye - Everton
CM - Slater - Hull
CM - Berge - Fulham
LM - Hamer - Cov
ST - Jebbo - Bournemouth
ST - McBurnie - Hull

Calvert Lewin - Leeds
Gibbs White - Forest
McAtee - Forest
Dowell - Hull
Osula - Newcastle
Brooks - Bournemouth

Don’t think I missed any.

So you would have kept all of these players would you?

No. My point is, as soon as they come to Bramall Lane they turn to crap.

You have only to look at McBurnie who was nowhere near as effective and prolific and at one stage fell on the floor, injured himself and spent the next few games on the treatment table. We just couldn't find him with any consistency and regularity to have a strike on goal.

I was thinking specifically about the last summers window and the incomings after berge/ndaiye if im honest which is probably unfair... the bad windows seem to stick in your memory for longer

(Egan was an example of spending a 'medium' fee and getting good value which would have come from previous sales i imagine)

Henderson, Bogle, Ndiaye, Gibbs White, Egan, Hamer, McAtee, Brooks did not turn to crap at the Lane.

Ampadu was crap. He was crap the two seasons after that too.

Osula, DCL and Jebbison were not ready when they were with us. We used the DCL money to finance promotion. Osula was never going to be a regular scorer for us during his contract and we got a good price for him, and I do t blame Jebbison for leaving after United’s medical negligence cost him a year of his career. I don’t follow the PL at all. Are Jebbison and Osula scoring freely?

Slater and McBurnie are both beneficiaries of everything going right for Hull. If Slater would improve our midfield, that’s the first time since his departure that this has been the case. As for McBurnie, it is not the clubs fault that he was constantly injured and behaving like a gaping arsehole on and off the pitch. If we had signed him last season we would more likely than not got the same half arsed effort.

Sorry, with the exception of McBurnie, I don’t think you’re right.

Henderson, Bogle, Ndiaye, Gibbs White, Egan, Hamer, McAtee, Brooks did not turn to crap at the Lane.

Bogle seriously underperformed for us. Post injury, you could see his head wasn't in the game. As said, Egan was exposed and flat footed a number of times, especially when he lost his CB partner in JOC. Hamer ... where do I start? Hamer is your archetypal 'luxury player' who dazzles with the odd bit of flair and can bang one in from 25 yards but for a long spell at the club was either hoovering in yellows or injured. Consistent he wasn't. A game changer, maybe. And I think there is universal consensus that oddly, United played a much more compact and resolute game without him on the pitch. Go figure that one out for yourself. McAtee we were never keeping hold of and was basically a ringer and Andre Brooks was again, inconsistent.

Osula, Jebbison and DCL have all been more productive in attack than they were playing for us. Slater and McBurnie also.

My point is that all of those players are now at least 30% more prolific out of a United shirt. Don't believe me? Which division are we in? Which division are they playing in? Even playing against higher calibre sides, they look more active and productive, and most of them played under Wilder. There's a common denominator here. Two in fact.

I stopped reading here, because that was enough wrong for one day.

That resolute and compact game without Hamer is really yielding the goals isn't it.

Bogle was one of the few decent players in both our last 2 PL seasons and helped to win us promotion.

Egan helped to win us promotion twice and was almost ever present when we finished 9th in the top flight.

Your closing point was not the point you made before and I was answering. Your point was "as soon as they come to Bramall Lane they turn to crap". Which is not true, although of course you will not admit that.

Sorry, with the exception of McBurnie, I don’t think you’re right.
I don't think it's right regarding Mcburnie either. If he spends four years at Hull he will also have varied performances over the seasons. He was one of our most regularly starting strikers in our best season in yonks, and performed far better than people remember.

Bogle scored more goals for us in the PL than he did for Leeds last season, and we were a worse team. He was statistically more prolific for us.

Osula, Jebbison and DCL played for us as kids, so obviously have become more productive as they've become adults. What a ridiculous point to make, Cole Palmer has been more than 100% more efficient for Chelsea than he was for Man City, which proves Guardiola was a fraud 😂

I get the point OP but it feels a bit like driving past the house you used to live in, the new owners have spent money doing it up, maybe added an extension and suddenly you are thinking why did I ever move?

Players journeys aren't linear and we get them for the time we get them. The clubs own journey also plays a part and if we get relegated, if we get promoted, all change the direction of the club and also the players under contract.

When we last got relegated and had the big clear out, I don't remember many people clamouring for Egan to be retained. It felt like we had our best out of him and it was time for him to move on. He then had a season where he did nothing and hardly played (didn't he get loaned out from Burnley?). He ends up in a hull side that weren't expected to do much and then they had a good season and got promoted. Thats not us not doing a good job with a player.

I wish we had kept more players, but in reality, their own lives play a huge part as well. getting decent money for Osula is a great example where we were unlikely to get him genuine game time (and the game time he did have he hardly set the world alight), he gets a good move, we get a decent amount of money. As long as we have sell on clauses then the club is doing good business for the player and for us.

As an aside, I think Egan deserves all the credit in the world for how he's turned things around for himself.
