Match 1. I got to see Egan, Slater and Mcburnie batter Man U. Mcburnie weaved past the Man U midfield, something I have never ever ever seen him even come close to doing at SUFC, and slater was delivering quality set pieces into the area.

Match 2. Our former set piece coach continues to receive praise for turning Brentford into a pressing machine who managed to dismantle a £300m summer spending spurs.

Match 3. Ipswich v Sunderland. The team who remind me of the day we were 2-0 up at Wembley and lost 2-1 up against the team who did what we tried to do just much better. Go up, buy good young players and smash the championship to return even better. Would United ever sign a player like Enciso? Never ever.

Match 4. Leeds v Forest. Hilarious in its bitterness value. McAtee, Gibbs-White, Calvert-Lewin, Ampadu and Bogle. Never made a dime on any of those players. Leeds, a team who lost a play off final and decided to back the manager and go again. Our board inexplicably decided to sack the manager and spend millions on useless players.

Match 5. Ndiaye VS Dean Henderson. Ndiaye, a lad from the youth who cost us nothing but we let go for £12m because we can’t afford to let players leave for nothing. We just got promoted to the prem!! How could we not afford to lose £12m to have someone of his ability for 1 season! Remembering how we had to sell Berge and Ndiaye to raise funds for Hamer, I’ve an idea, keep Berge and Ndiaye and sign Hamer and dare I say it, compete! And Coventry have just shown us what you do if you go up with your loan keeper, sign him!!

Berge might have wanted out but unless he’s going on strike, he’s under contract, I’ve always thought it was £12m for Ndiaye, might be wrong but doubt it was as much as £20m.

I understand where you're coming from but it's like water off a duck's back to me now. When I first watched football in the 60s you could just about name every team member (week in, week out) for just about every top team.
Nowadays, players move around so much I find it difficult to keep up with who they actually play for. Throw in all the unpronounceable foreign names and it all just goes over my head - I have to confess my memory isn't what it used to be though

It is strange to see what happens when our players move on.

We criticised Egan for being easily turned and vulnerable to the over the top ball. We never used Regan Slater and we saw McBurnie do nothing but roll about looking for pens because we never fed him the service Hull does now. We wondered when N'Daiye would ever play for us and why he couldn't do 90 minutes (but boy oh boy, paired with MGW and McAtee was devastating) and we found Calvert-Lewin easily enough to sell, like Bogle and Ampadu screeched out of our car park three years ago. Who could blame him?

What does it do to players who pull on the sacred stripes of United that turns them into such mediocrity? We rarely turn dogshit into gold-dust but see the opposite happen when they leave us.

Maybe there is a player in Tommy Cannon?

But I think the point the poster was making was that NDiaye, Calvert Lewin, Berge, Osula, etc have all gone on too have good careers in the Premiership.

To be fair nearly all clubs adopt that approach because players do indeed know that. Except Sheffield Wednesday and that didn't turn out too well either.

The most striking though is that the club has any policy at all. We certainly do not have a policy to look at how we might replace players who leave, or for that matter who will strengthen the side, improving both the club and themselves and turning a tidy profit in due course.

That might be a little unfair as there may be an actual policy in place to sign only players who the manager thought were good once upon a time and who we can now afford to sign because they're on the downward slide and, preferably, injury-prone. Bamford is, of course, the proof that policy has been a roaring success.

I get the point the op is making but think the reality sits somewhere in the middle here…

In my opinion, Wilder’s strengths are motivating and player psychology. Although I think he falls short with the more technically gifted players but that’s where the coaches and the wider management team come in.

Granted his approach it doesn’t work with all players but I think he does get more out of the grafters and those low on confidence. Perhaps less effective with the more cultured players but I know that will split opinion.

But I think the point the poster was making was that NDiaye, Calvert Lewin, Berge, Osula, etc have all gone on too have good careers in the Premiership.

NDiaye and Berge were class players you could tell that. Osula has flourished at Newcastle and a £15m was too good an offer to turn down. Calvert Lewin is a decent player when he can be arsed

Calvert Lewin possibly Osula was young and raw Newcastle saw the potential and can afford to pay for that

I was thinking along the same lines when I caught up with MOTD yesterday evening .

Looking at the likes of Brentford , Leeds , Ipswich , even Hull .

How far we have fallen in such a short time . How little we have in return for our 3 years in the PL and subsequent Parachute payments . How badly the club has been run .

The types of players we are after at the moment , frees and loans - the state of our ownership and the despair and almost acceptance and indifference to the situation by our loyal but repeatedly beaten up supporters,

Remember Henderson wanted to be Man Utd’s and England’s number one. He would not have agreed to us buying him.
I get the point that you make, but players’ own requirements sometimes make the ideal impossible.

I was thinking exactly the same as the OP whilst watching - I think you could get a starting 11 of ex Blades from current Premier League squads. How good that side would be is up for discussion. I think that a lot have flourished by playing with better players at other clubs (although I am not sure this applies to the Hull based players).

Funny thing regarding player sales - we just seem to be one of those clubs that doesn’t get good fees - we either sell on the cheap with a year left on contract or sell on the cheap because they are young players who have longer left on contract but are unproven. I can only think of Ramsdale where we got a decent fee. Are there lessons to be learned for the club though? Our approach seems very short sighted and costly to us.

I can only think of Ramsdale where we got a decent fee. Are there lessons to be learned for the club though? Our approach seems very short sighted and costly to us.

Match 4. Leeds v Forest. Hilarious in its bitterness value. McAtee, Gibbs-White, Calvert-Lewin, Ampadu and Bogle. Never made a dime on any of those players.

McAtee, Gibbs-White and Ampadu were on loan, so we couldn't possibly make a dime on them. It's good that we loaned and developed all those quality players, not bad. We got a significant transfer fee for DCL given the possision we were in at what he had achieved up to that point, and we at least made our money back on Bogle selling him in the last year of his contract.

It's impossible not to be bitter if you twist everything to sound as painful as possible.

Ampadu and McAtee could’ve been players we could’ve bought if the club had any ambition/foresight. Why is it good if we develop players for other clubs? The only thing we want out of a loan is for that player to bring us success in the short term, we failed to go up with Gibbs-White but managed to net £40m for wolves, how is that successful for us? We absolutely did not get a significant fee for Calvert-Lewin, I actually remember a coach at Everton taking the piss out of how little they actually paid for him. Bogle is currently in his prime for Leeds in the prem and we signed him as a youngster but still managed to not make money on him .

Honesty if you spin things constantly to make it look like everything’s ok, then nothing will ever improve.
