It's buried in here but Danny Hall says: United need two centre-halves this summer, with Nils Zatterstrom expected to leave again and Mark McGuinness deemed surplus to requirements and made available for a move just 12 months after being signed from Luton Town.

Is it public knowledge we are letting McGuinness go or is this just being announced?

Just being announced. I also think it's wrong, and stupid - not as bad as he's made out to be, just not stellar
 
I think that Baptiste being used ahead of him in pre season is as big an indicator as any. I think they are probably of similar ability at the moment too, with Baptiste having plenty of potential too. No brainer to see if someone will take McGuiness

Losing two centre backs at 6 foot 4 and not replacing like for like in terms of height would be insane imo in the Championship. We already have a small goalkeeper. Our lack of aerial ability at the back cost us dearly last season. Its the only area where McGuinness was useful. The rest of his game was poor.

Tanganga lost out on numerous occasions in the air. He excelled with a giant alongside him in the form of Cooper at the Wall so Souttar would fit perfectly as a replacement. The current back up options of Baptiste and possibly Doherty who is really a FB just dont have the aerial prowess needed to navigate a 46 game season in the second tier. So the implication we are looking for 2 CB's is welcome but they have to be of the right height and physical presence.
 
From looking at the bloke, he should be a monster at the back but he just doesn't deliver on the first impression often enough.

As far as performances are concerned, it's a similar scenario to when Jack Robinson was here where a good game was one where he didn't make a costly blunder.

He might go 2 or 3 games and look alright then blots his copybook again with a simple error.

I've seen enough of McGuinness to know that he's a decent, week in, week out League One defender but isn't of the standard to start in the Championship every week unless you want to be scrapping at the bottom.

Tanganga is around 6tf tall, nowhere near tall enough in my opinion.

6ft 2" should be the minimum for a defender, and in the modern era, probably more like 6ft 3" - 6ft 4".

Tanganga and McGuinness (and Bindon) were ok at running at balls when we were taking a corner, all scoring the odd goal or two, but for defending, I prefer taller lads, just my opinion.

I also think you need a 6 footer in the middle of the park, preferably with pace.

He’s good when he attacks the ball.

He often lets it bounce first and then attacks it and he’s not agile enough at that point.

I suppose on the face of it, we'd put the criteria into James Bord's access database and it spat out the likes of McGuinness and Soumare and they'd thought, box ticked, job done.

Only problem is that neither of them were especially good footballers, often enough, for a club seemingly with aspirations for promotion.
 
Being a threat from set pieces is his main asset. He's very good value for that.

The problem is, he plays like he's just realised that he has feet at the end of his legs. Very uncomfortable with the ball at his feet. It would be easier to share a kickabout with my fridge.

This gives me hope that we realise the need to address the situation:



And FWIW, I think we'd see Tanganga thrive with a decent CB partner.

I think this hits the nail on the head. It's the recruitment that's wrong and all the animosity to particular players is aimed in the wrong direction. If they were pissheads or thugs I'd join in. They're just young blokes, with more talent than most of us, but just aren't good enough,

Some fans are aiming their ire at the wrong individuals.

Tanganga is a converted full back playing at CB as was JLT. They both are weak in dealing with crosses coming into the box at height. It rarely works and the suggestion Doherty is much of the same is a concern. As someone posted recently we have never replaced the height of Anel and Souza at the back and in the middle. Hull got over the line playing Matt Crooks in midfield at 6 foot 4. We lack a physical presence in the middle and will get found out if this isnt resolved imo.

Yeh , maybe - so we spent £6m on a CB who can't be dominant and lead the defence , nor does he possess the temperament for captaincy.
Hmm.
Looks like the Wall did well there.
Kept Jake Cooper and sold us the other one.
It's not like you can get em confused.

McGuiness will be on a lot less than Souttar. Swap plus 3m going to Leicester.

We get our man and they get 3m plus a big serviceable league one CB on half the money Souttar was on
 
Just feels very odd this. Wilder had no issue with him, was using him fairly regularly last season and then all of a sudden - didn't want to use him and now wants him gone?

I’m not sure he’s a Wilder sort of player and he used him last season out of necessity because he’d fallen out with Ben Mee.

He’d already fallen out with Wilder a month or so before the sidemen event.

I wonder if the offer to appear at that is the reason they fell out?
