How much did we actually pay for McGuinness? I honestly thought at the time we brought him in for around £2-3m as a squad player, but I've seen reports suggesting £10m+, which would just be outrageous if true.

Personally, I'd definitely keep him. He's reportedly on £25k pw, which is on the higher end for the Championship, but he's had a good start to the season. Wouldn't be the first player under Wilder to go from the transfer list to one of the first names on the team sheet.

Can't see anyone giving us more than £5m for him, and even that would probably be a real push. So realistically would we get anyone better in?!

By the time the window shuts will 3 league games and 2 cup games (given Bolton will be too late to include) be enough to get a 180 from Wilder?

He’s doing himself and us no harm. If we paid say 4m out of the 6.5m for him and Chong there must be a chance to get that back now.

I’d really keep him unless there was a deal done that we simply couldn’t turn down for a better player.

Got to remember as well MM is 25. Souttar and Wolfenden are both 27 already. Not over the hill but you’d do well to not lose value on them if they move on in a few years.

Whilst our record of producing and selling has been good, our record of buying big and selling bigger is almost non-existent.

I think we can try to be too clever this window.

If the medical staff think they can get a tune out of Webster then I’d be tempted to just get him and leave it.

“Upgrading” McGuinness to Souttar when Souttar has Asian Cup games Jan 9 to Jan 19 fixed and if they get to the final, February 5, which means he’ll miss the FA Cup match and Bristol City at home then potentially Wrexham away, Preston at home, Charlton at home and possibly Watford away on the 7th.

So you lose money probably by swapping the two and the one with the worst fitness record is already destined to miss up to 6 matches already.

Is it really worth the aggro? Play you undo all the continuity you’ve built in a solid back four. It’s tinkering on a whim.

Likewise just get what you can for Cannon this window. He’s so easily replaceable for the use he is to this team. Next we’ll be moaning about lack of value when someone is in the last year of their contract. Someone like Michael Forss on a free who has also played wide and played for Wilder at Boro would be alright. He’s 27, glt 13 in league one last year. He’d add to the mix without upsetting it.

I’d be happy to bank 20-22m on fees, lose Cannon, keep McGuinness and bring in Webster and Forss on frees and 1, ideally 2 wingers on loan.
