Gil Reece's 2nd goal in the 3-0 win against Birmingham on 17th April 1971 (our promotion rivals suffered a shock home defeat against Watford on the same day)

Wonderful header of the ball, scored some great flying headers and flicked headers.

In the Top 25 of all time Blades goalscorers.

Deserves to be remembered as an exciting attacking talent on his day.

Great picture SB and great goal by the Welsh Wizard...The first goal though is one of my favourite Blades goals, where he made the Birmingham defense look like mugs, weaving through them towards us on the Kop End...pity there's not a picture of that one,but the diving header was a great goal aswell.

The picture of the 1st goal was on the same centrespread of that programme. You can only see the grounded Mike Kelly on the top left of my picture. Will post the photo of his 1st goal tomorrow or Thursday

Nice one SB...is the picture in the Cardiff program?...I'll have to dig it out and have a look.

The ability to perform a diving header is something I've always admired in professional footballers.

I played centre-half for donkeys' years in all sorts of local leagues - still turn out Sunday mornings, in fact - and I could give you the dive or I could give you the header...but never both at the same time.

Good article that SF..The game v Blackpool where he broke his leg is about my earliest memory of going to the Lane.it's right about Gil being instrumental in that promotion run in..he played as part of that front 2 with Dearden, but often coming from deeper positions like with the first Brum goal...great player,skilful...and great move to bring him from the wing to a central position...he was on fire in that run

I thought this was going to be another Ched Evans thread.

Me too !!
I'm soooooo excited,he's out soon ,I think he'll be great playing off Higdon and belt us a lot of goals, and we'll soon be in the pre...oh, sorry..got a bit carried away..I'll ferk off ..:(:tumbleweed:

My favourite player and my favourite performance by a Blade. That game was the catalyst for me for promotion in my first season watching football. I thought it was always going to be like that... hmmm. Reece became an Icon to me after that day ,so much so that 34 years later my daughters middle name became Reece.

Great post Silent. The art of the diving header. The previous season we beat Everton in the cup 3rd round and Colin Addison scored a spectacular diving header. In the same game Gil scored a more 'swooping header'. Both goals were scored at the Lane end with both crosses coming from the right wing - similar to the one above.

Not sure if any one has access to photos of the goals but there is a clear similarity - was this perfected on the training ground?

Always maintain that this old grey haired bloke wants to see those days return so that the young blades of today can enjoy going to BDTBL as much as we did.

I was in the upper tier of the Bramall Lane stand for that game - what a header and although Colin didn't play that long for us, he was a terrific striker.

Everton won the First Division that season and we were a Division 2 side - a great achievement.

John Harris on top of developing the best young home grown talent we've ever seen, also had a fantastic eye for buying players, especially good attacking players.

Great memories.

Photos of both goals against Everton are in the First 100 Years book by Denis Clareborough (published in 1989). Anyone who has the book can post these photos on here

What a game that Everton match was. A top Division 2 side outplaying and beating the best side in England at the time.

Woody from teenage memory murdered Keith Newton in the first half to the point where Everton got him to swap positions with their other England international full back Tommy Wright to try to contain him.

Remember Woody cutting in from the right wing at the Kop end and hitting one with his left foot which nearly took the bar off!

They took the lead with a pen when Ball went down like a pack of cards during a typical foray by Hodgy off his line. All three goals at the other end.

This. Even during five a side today, I hit a shot and put my foot directly through the back of the ball in the manner that I remember watching my ultimate United hero do so forty odd years ago. I don't think there's a player in the English game who is as deceptively nimble, built-like-a-brick-shithouse, accurate with his passing and technically adept as Alan Woodward. I watch the nostalgia clips now and love every moment of his magic.

Yes it is. You can post it in here. Saves me from asking my son to do it for me
Think I'll have to leave it to your son SB...I've managed to locate the Cardiff programme, and much to my annoyance..no Gil Reece picture. It probably got ripped out and put on my bedroom wall,as I tended to cut pictures out when I was 11..even the picture of John Flynn has been lifted ffs..don't know what I was thinking at the time. The front cover is intact, and shows Gil with Billy Dearden after his goal at Boro.image.jpg

Tommy Wright was subbed at half time, sub Sandy Brown (who died last April) replaced him. Keith Newton (died some years ago) was switched to RB so that Brown could play in his normal position at LB. it was Johhny Morrisey who got tripped by Hodgy after pouncing on a poor back pass by Badger

I was at the Boro game, we got the lead just before half time when Dearden headed in a floating FK by TC. Boro equalised with a few minutes left (ex Wendy Hickton the scorer)

I was at the Boro game - can remember being behind the goal where we scored. Open ended and got absolutely soaked. Fantastic season, nervous but it all worked out well in the end

no your obituary ,I would like to read it.
Ive got the video and about 30 others but no video player :)
