Said the same for McBurnie and everyone else. Drink driving and using your mobile whilst driving are two of the most selfish things you can do, only takes a split second for something to go wrong in front of you. Can’t fathom how people are prepared to risk others’ lives like that.

I reckon 40% of drivers I see are on their phones. Not just youngsters either.

I found out a month ago about it, my mrs told me as she is a sports journalist. But as she is a big blade, she decided not to break the story, Same for the Nos stuff, another journalist will run it at some point i guess. Club needs to get these kids in line !
Oops, you might want to consider a visit to the florists mate!

No doubt it will be largely forgotten when he scores for us next season, or when parents have their kids queue up for a selfie with a 'professional' who could have wiped someone out, drink driving.

No, Sydie is just another w*nker who was willing to put people at risk for his own selfishness and stupid actions.

IF there is a story about drinking and Nos then it needs blowing up.

'Culture' proven meaningless. Again.

And this is only what we get to know about due to criminal convictions and it becoming public knowledge.

I'm not defending drink driving, but I think there is a common misunderstanding (from people of every generation) on what you can legally drink and drive.

From that report, it would show that he had 2-2.5 pints roughly. I know a lot of people who would have that and drive. "It's ok, it was with a meal", "It's only a short drive home" "I drank them quick so it won't be in my system yet"

Even drinking 1 pint would in theory put you over the limit. Messaging needs to change that you shouldn't drink anything. Allowing people to drink a bit, ends up with lack of clarity.

We all make mistakes, sometimes because we don't think, sometimes because we don't know any better and sometimes because we think we can get away with something.

Sydie needs to learn from his mistake and I would suggest helps others to know better too.

I've got about ~40kg on Peck, and if I had two pints I'd feel groggy/excited enough to know it'd affect my driving. I'm a bit of a stickler about stupid driving because I've had people in my life who've experienced the consequences of it. Ultimately up to you to ensure the safety of everyone else on the road and ensure your reaction times are everything they can be.

I'd caveat that he'll not be the only person, and people do make mistakes and can learn from them.

He's not from a generation where drinking and driving is acceptable though, he should know better. Also if the club hasn't done anything to educate players after Moose,McBurnie and Shackleton's run in with it, then we've been irresponsible. The club really needs to do some work with our players on what it means to be a role model and ambassador for the club. I know they're young, but they're highly paid professionals who need to do better.

I can see where you are coming from although personally I don't see the need to drink and drive, it should be one or the other. Apart from the more obvious countries where Alcohol Blood count is zero such as UAE and Bahrain etc mainly because of Islamic Laws. It's surprising that the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Brazil have a 0% limit, the micrograms/millilitres stuff although I am sure is backed by science at some point isn't the greatest. Depending on how much food I have had or sleep, I can have a couple of beers and feel fine or if especially the late kick offs in the World Cup after work, can have a couple of quick pints and feel a bit tipsy. A 0% limit has much easier guidance.

Obviously it’s a stupid thing to do, but I don’t understand why everytime a footballer is told off for it people make a thing of it.

Footballers, by and large, are rich, egotistical and stupid young men, not role models.
You're old enough to realise that, a 10 year old kid besotted with football absolutely sees them as role models

Because their role puts them in positions where they should be under public scrutiny. Whilst they don't necessarily ask or want to be role models, they're in a job where they will have young people looking up to them and should be held to account more than most.

Drink driving in particular is a very egregious thing, as footballers are paid well enough that they can afford to not be in this situation.

The average salary in the Championship is £775k a year
The average salary in League 1 is £209k a year
The average salary in League 2 is £104k a year

There's no reason anyone should be drink driving anyway, but when you're talking about wages like that there's literally not even anything close to an excuse for ever being in that position.

Even that though is the issue, its all down to personal experience and how they feel. That isn't a suitable way to determine if you are fit to drive.

Personally I would feel ok to drive after 2 pints. However I come from a point of view that I would rather be safe than sorry and so won't drink at all and drive.

this next generation confuses me a bit on their attitudes. Many young people don't drink in the same way we would have in our teens and 20's. They didn't grow up with it being acceptable to drink and drive, however I think that idea of not going out to get drunk, means 1 or 2 doesn't feel like they are drunk so its probably fine to drive. The amount of young people I have met in the past couple of years who have joked with me about "5 and drive". So many of them are unlikely to have 5 drinks in a night anyway. Although then other substances now seem more widely used too.

Interesting point around education as a large number of footballers sacrifice a lot of their education into their football and whilst clubs do have processes in place to catch this up, I wonder how much of PSHE gets covered. They are highly paid professionals, but I would also say many are not incredibly bright and many haven't lived in what we would deem the normal world.

Again, not making excuses, he did wrong, he has been punished for it and rightly so. He is lucky nothing worse happened. I do think the club should be putting some serious thought into the academy players in areas like this.

Because it's in the news.

on NOS with most of the other younger players too. Alcohol and NOS are part of our culture, even on the team bus. Not all of them, but most of them.
Snus is also quite a thing with young footballers. Another fucking stupid choice for professional athletes that will result in mouth cancers for a few of them.

They see them as role models due to on pitch behaviour, which does matter. A10 year old should have no idea whats going on with the players off the pitch.
In fairness, all you'd said was "they're not role models". I'd also argue that kids, especially in the age of celebrity, are well aware of stuff beyond the pitch (although I'd acknowledge perhaps not at 10).

A lot of what you are saying is defending it though, are you Mungo Jerry?

Top athletes don't drink, yet we wonder why our players are blowing out of their arses after an hour?

I remember years ago reading a post from someone on here who'd seen Harry Maguire in a club in Sheffield, celebrating a friend's birthday. He was with us in League One at the time, and would have been 18/19/20, and the poster who saw him said it was quite funny to watch him in the club, because while all his friends were raucously enjoying themselves, obviously quite drunk, Harry was standing at the side with an orange juice, not drinking anything alcoholic. I've since seen Harry say that he never drinks alcohol during the season or whilst in training, and only occasionally and moderately out of season.

The Harry Maguire who went on to play for England... and score for England... in a World Cup... and captain Manchester United.

Sydie and the rest of our players might want to bear this in mind, if they have aspirations of making it at the very top level, or even if their aspiration is simply to have the best career they can, while they can. Think on, lads. 🤷‍♂️

Not really sure Sydies misdemeanor is reflective of anything , age , wealth , responsibility etc.

Lots of people of all ages, educational backgrounds and lifestyles are caught over the legal limit.

24% up to age 24
The remainder all ages .
Daft thing to do , harsh lesson learned .

Brilliant post, no excuse for drink driving.

The problem with guzzling when you're a sportsman is that your injuries don't heal so quickly.

Alcohol is basically a poison, so your kidneys flush it out of your body. The problem is that they flush vitamins and minerals out of your system too, which are required for healing.

I'm no sports scientist but an old mate who was a pro at a big club around 25 years ago, where.there was a big drinking culture, eventually brought in penalties for players caught drinking with certain injuries for this very reason.

A reading of 57 in breath is more than 50% over the legal limit of 35.
He's had quite a lot to reach that.
Certainly enough to have felt the effects of intoxication.
So he's driven a car KNOWING he shouldn't have.
There are many variables which affect the reading : body weight , food in your stomach , how quickly the alcohol was taken , how soon after the intake the test occurred , strength of the beer , liver function , etc etc.
But claiming you've had 2 pints and blown 57 is a bit of a stretch.
Most intoximeter operators I know would say that at 57 you are likely to be well pissed-up.
From personal experience in my work with the police , I drank a pint of 4.5% lager on an empty stomach , waited the mandatory time and blew a reading of just 5.
The stock phrase "I've only had 2 pints guv'nor" is unlikely to be the truth.
Although , as I say , there are many variables and there can be exceptions to what I've said.
