With links to Seamus Coleman in the past 24 hours and interest in some younger players, coupled with Chris mentioning he wanted some more experience, which senior players do you think could come under consideration? Any gems out there that (shudders) could “do a job”?

That was my thinking really.

He seems an obvious player to look at; played for Boro last season on loan, experience at the top level, 30.

We would miss Burrows’ attacking output. But I suppose that then depends on the balance of the team.

If you take a left sided player in the ‘3’ of the 4-2-3-1 who is very attack minded and has a good goal output then perhaps a more defensive left back is a better choice.

Perhaps longer term we have aspirations for McClinchey. He has 5 assists in 25 youth PL matches at Chelsea so maybe he is a future attacking fullback.

I still don’t see what our plan is with Rhys. At the time he got injured he was very decent, he was fit, got up and down and was unfortunate to pull up at Coventry and it was tragic he missed the WC in Qatar. But conversely, a three year deal at the time it was granted seemed excessive for someone who had missed so much time through injury.

But now it seems like an insurance policy. McCallum had taken over as first choice left back from Burrows. He is more athletic and whilst his goal output is lower, he is better in the air and better defensively.

Someone would need to replace Burrows’ attacking output if he left. But this is where money talks. Yes, ideally I’d keep him. But he’s two years left on his deal which means he has prime value for us. You’ve got to think an eight figure bid takes him.

You default to McCallum with Norrington-Davies as competition. You have a good look at Buyabu too and then if needs be, you consider the loan market or if you offload Rhys then Charlie Taylor or Targett come into your thinking.

It is without doubt a tricky year but 8th spot is still a carrot for plenty of teams.
