Player Suggestion Souttar played and scored last night

What annoyed me about the crocks we signed was that we had our parachute £ and should not have been fishing in that pond.

Now that we're well and truly skint , it's probably necessary for us to look at players who have a risk of injury , in order to get any kind of quality.
The ones without injury or physical deficiency are probably unaffordable.

This puts us in a bit of a Catch 22.
Just when we can't afford to waste our limited £ , we are forced by the market to take the risk of wasting it.
Where does it say that we are well and truly skint? We don't know what funds are available and what could be generated and used from player sales.

I expect us to be very competive for this season at least.

Unless the owners throw something and or new investors come along we will need to reduce the wage bill by around 20 million to start then the 85% rules
So it will be sell sell sell
Accept it we are shopping at Netto just before closing time aiming for the use by isle

That's not a bad tactic to follow, if you've got a decent sized freezer. Granted we'd need a bloody big 'un for Souttar but...

I think clubs will be creative and some way round it through creative accounting. Except us of course.

What? Like (early) Binden, McGutless and Tanganga?

Agree that we shouldn’t have this as the marquee signing but the lad has form with us and if he’s keen to rejoin because he’s had such a positive experience then it’s a risk worth managing.

Contrast the risk with paying £5m for McGuinness, who I have never rated and it turned out I was 100 correct. What a waste of money he’s been.

On Binden. I was a harsh critic of his to begin with as I saw nothing in him. He improved immeasurably when he got his chance in the team, later on, but he was not the sort of completely dominant presence that Souttar has been. I now believe Binden has a decent ceiling and can have a decent career in the game. He’ll need someone like Souttar next to him, mind.
Yes, you were completely wrong on Bindon.

It was unfair to judge any of the players on that period, especially a young one.
Disagree. They were all shocking.
A bunch of headless chickens.
No composure and no defensive structure.
They lost 6 games in a row without looking like a team. Now, a lot of that was down to the manager but the players were dreadful, individually and collectively.
It’s a professional football club playing in the second tier of English football. Of course they are going to be judged by the standards displayed. 🤷‍♂️

There are fine margins at Championship level and they weren’t even close to being properly prepared. A young player stepping into that shitshow was always going to struggle. Not that I’m a supporter of our players, who are by & large the most unprofessional bunch we’ve had for a long time, and most of them showed that. But Bindon was hung out to dry, and big kudos to him for coming back in the manner he did. Certainly more backbone than a lot of our fans. Some of the comments on here at the time were ridiculous. People judging him on that period were shown to be wrong, as you admitted.

It’s not under 12 school football.
We have younger players in the squad than
Bindon, who is a NZ international. He showed zero aptitude, was caught out of possession multiple time and his positions was very questionable.
Yes, fair play to him when he can back into the squad, the lad did well. Not let’s not pretend he needed to be put in cotton wool.

Not a question of wrapping him in cotton wool. When you’re as exposed as our back two constantly were, and you’re also having to attempt to cover the positions of various players who have gone missing, what did you expect to happen? I sometimes find it hard to believe that some of our fans understand what they are seeing. Generally the ones with the most vocal opinions.

Spot on Nick!

Before he returned his injury I was quite outspoken about it being a really bad idea to bring him back.

Now I’m in turmoil.

Head says he’s already had an ACL and Achilles injury so it’s a massive risk to bring him back as it could be a matter of time until something else happens

Heart says he was colossal for us, gerrim the fuck in, make him captain and chain-wank him off behind south stand

Unfortunately I think it’s the blades curse. If we don’t sign him, he’ll go on to make 40 appearances next season and be outstanding. If we do sign him, he’ll trip over in the car park on the 1st day of the season and be out for 18 months

Case for:

Demonstrated in his half a season with us that he's a bit of a cheat code at this level.
The best 'head it, kick it' CB I saw in the division and pretty capable with ball at feet too.

The injuries seemingly haven't impacted his ability to play at that level.

Case against:

He'll be 28 soon and there's a large base of evidence to suggest his body isn't up to the rigours of a 50 game EFL season.
I still believe that Boxing Day loss at home to Burnley, in which he & Souza sustained long term injuries, cost us promotion.

Conclusion:

He is worth a punt, if the economics are right... however, if this World Cup is inflating his value and tipping it towards a level where we'd need him to be fit (as opposed to a punt), then I think we'd be better off focussing elsewhere.

If our targets are Souttar, Phillips, Stewart etc. then we're taking a huge gamble.
