Why?

7 goals from the wing last season for Derby.

SUFC comparison:
  • Brooks - 6 goals
  • Hamer - 5 goals
If Hamer goes, BBD is a decent enough replacement and would allow us to play a more out-and-out winger on each side (Brooks on right).
If Hamer stays, BBD is a good challenger for the LW, or would allow Hamer to drift around more centrally
Cause Wilder would probably play him as a centre back. (Joking of course) but he may play him at RW if Brooks goes…

If we do sell Gus, I'd prefer us to sign a replacement that's actually a winger. To give us the option of making our attacks less one dimensional.

We have the left footed Brooks who appears most comfortable cutting in from the right. Gus is similar on the left and will always looks to cut in. BBD would be the same.

It means when teams sit in, we're heavily reliant on our full backs to provide width. We get caught out on counters far too often and stifle our own by cutting in every single time (which also makes us incredibly predictable and boring).

So I'd like us to sign either a left footed left winger. Or a right footed right winger to compete with Brooks and give us more options out wide.

Some might say just put Brooks LW. But I do think he's more comfortable cutting inside so not sure its as simple as that.

Inverted wingers seem the thing these days… Saka etc

I hope this isn't true
I expect it might be

This is about our level now

At the time he was signing for Derby people were questioning why we weren't in for him and that it was a backwards step/no ambition from BBD... fast forward a season and he finished 5 places higher than us

Hope not. Be a poor use of dwindling funds. Slow, weak and getting worse. He has no resale and no fixed position. If this is true, wonder why we have a scouting team?
we do they just watch Blades matches on repeat only looking at Blades players not the opposition

Surely we look for a bit more athleticism on the left? When you look how effective Brooks & Seriki are, we need to replicate that on the left side.

I know he looked sluggish at times when we last had him but he still got 4 goals and 3 assists in 17 games for us. Hardly a terrible return especially considering this was off the back of barely playing for Saints.

I'd take him for the right money, 27 is hardly past it.

We played him on the wrong side largely in his last spell.

On the left or even up top he’s a good championship player.

25 to 32 probably players best years
It’s mad really. Players like Messi, Yamal, Mbappe, Bellingham etc have skewed a lot of people’s minds that you’ll have the complete player by 19-20.

Look at the amount of stick Peck got last season at times. He’s still 4 years off being in that peak years bracket and has just done 2 seasons as a regular in the championship and being courted by PL sides.

There’s also an obsession amongst fans about resale value (which is important but not the be all and end all).

.

I’ve noticed that in internet discourse terms the “past it” age seems to be getting lower all the time despite we are in an era where players are still going til their late 30s and beyond.

This may be true, but I don't think you'd disagree that:

a) The number of players that hit 27-28 and have not already peaked is absolutely minimal
b) As such, the chances of you profiting on that player, or even breaking even when considering book value, are slim to none
c) Therefore you need to have a fucking good reason to buy the player (i.e. he will significantly improve your chances of promoting to the PL) and justify the outlay

Is BBD still competent at this level? Sure. Is he a Mitrovic-level cheat code? No. Is he going to improve? No. Are we in a promotion window? No, we are in a rebuild

BBD was fantastic in the prem when played in his best position, left wing cutting in on his Right

We then signed him again when we already had Gus for that role

He then looked nowhere near as good on the right, unable to cut in and shoot, we basically stopped his best weapon

I'd be all in on signing him. He is a great player for our current level. Anyone who thinks differently, please tell me who else we would get better

Or, just get the wide players to swap wings? We often did it under Warnock.

Not against this at all, as long as he is’t shoehorned in right wing again. Wasn’t as good last time as he was in the prem season but wasn’t anywhere near as bad as some make out.
Will need 2 players to play of the left when Hamer leaves and also gives us the option of 2 up front. Imo he is better bet than cannon through the middle if we used that option.

Walks straight into our starting 11 considering Gus won't be here. Really don't get the meltdown. We're a mid table relatively skint championship club. Do you think we should be signing Mbappe?
No, but we could sign better by looking abroad. I know it’s a shocking thought but..

Wouldn’t be against him coming back, we could do a lot worse.

Hopefully it’s just more a case of fan speculation than a reflection of our recruitment strategy, but it’s concerning to see the same old names again!
