New episode out and the first in a 2-parter where we go through some of the most memorable commentary moments in United's history.

My only piece of negative feedback on this episode is that part 2 isn`t available. Absolutely loved it. What's interesting is the difference between radio Commentary and TV commentary - you touch on the need for commentators to leave that gap to allow the crowd noise to come through - you can`t really do that on radio - you kind of have to at least follow up "Jagielkaaaaaaaaa" (or whoever) with "scores for Sheffield United or similar" - Otherwise it can be difficult to distinguish a goal from a penalty award, or sometimes a great save (especially for goals scored by the away team where sometimes the crowd mike doesn`t pick up the away fans quite as much)

Without wanting to get into predictions territory I would (IMO) expect the following to be in the top 8 somewhere:

  • Jags v Leeds (Paul Walker?)
  • "Forget the maths" (Matterface?)
  • "its rolled for Fleck to hit it" (Not a clue)
  • "inside and outside he goes"/"How has he done that" (Not a clue)
Also having just checked precisely what was said for those last two, I realised I appear, over the space of 8 and a half years, to have Pavlov-ed myself into actually liking the "If you don't fucking bounce then your a Blade" song - I suspect because I know precisely what is coming next...

The last three are all Daniel Mann I believe, who was also responsible for Basham's arriving (at Elland Road, but he also used the same line in the 5-5 draw with swindon 🤓)

Fucks sake - how did I forget "Bashams Arriving"...

Favourite TV commentary moment was definitely BASHAM'S ARRIVIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIING

But the GOAT will always be "My voice has gone, I don't care" from Radio Sheff's coverage of Leeds in the Worthington Cup

Funnily enough after listening to the pod I realised I’ve very little memory of big commentary moments listening to United.

For the big occasions I was either there or watching in the pub where you can’t hear the commentators, or in recent years watching with sound off while trying to get the kids to sleep

My main memory of commentaries was always away games on the radio and your Steve Banyards, your Paul Walkers etc…..always taking a second or two to register with whether it’s actually a goal they are describing before celebrating.

Unlocked a memory of listening to the commentaries on Hallam FM back in the 90s. Think Banyard was on there. Mad to think (if I remember right) that Hallam and Radio Sheffield both did the commentaries separately.

2nd part of commentary moments available now

Great stuff once again. In regards to emotional commentary, I'd highly suggest people listen to the commentary from injury time of the Rochdale-York game on Sat. Both Radio Manchester and Radio York covered the game, and both commentary teams thoroughly demonstrate the emotions of football. The article below includes Radio York's comms on the York equaliser:

Yeah this was absolutely incredible

Wasn't sure where to post this but what an unbelievable start to a game

If Jones had done that to Whitehouse a few years later when Whitehouse had more muscle on him Whitehouse would have creamed him.

A day when fortune was not with us, made a little better by the news coming through whilst we were kept in that the Pigs had lost 7-1 at Arsenal.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, that last 16 was very weak, and if we had drawn Chelsea at home we would have reached the cup final as a minimum. Liverpool won the cup without playing a top tier side.

1st episode of commentary moments was a brilliant listen. A real tonic to counteract this season.

A podcast subtitle of "words you can see". Love how vivid the images are just from hearing the sounds. From this it made me realise that Jags and Brown's celebrations of windmilling and weaving around at full sprint are almost identical in my head!

Definitely not a nice piece of commentary to stick in the mind, but I always remember "The trap door is opening for Sheffield United!" as we scrambled to take a corner just at the start of injury time against Wigan in 2007.

New episode out with Bladepicker and Deadbat where we talk 80's Blades videos.

Absolute pleasure to record these with you and Deadbat Roy, great fun and great memories. After a brief listen though I do have to apologise about my work microphone as it sounds like I'm on a dodgy sattelite link full of treble about to give the scores from the Luxembourg jury!!!

I'll invest in a better mic for any future ones and worry that my work colleagues think I work from the dark side of the moon on Mondays 😂

Really enjoyable pod to take part in Bladepicker and Roygbiv . Quite a niche subject and maybe one for older Blades but great fun delving into our youth. Those video tapes were so important to me as a kid and I lost count of the number of times I watched some of them! So much easier these days but maybe that spoils the fun!

I've done a double header this afternoon and listened to the second half of the commentary one and then the latest video one. I share those frustrations and remember having to sit through Calendar or Look North just to watch the ten seconds when they might show our goals from the weekend.

Great work!

It sounded absolutely fine at the time too. Really weird

You sounded like Adam Ant at Live Aid. The others sounded like Queen at Live Aid, but we now know they took the sound inhibitors off to make them sound better than anyone else, so you may want to look at the others and ask yourself why!

Great episode once again. I had the 100 Yeas 100 Goals, Harry’s Game and MoTD, so great memories (“Bloody Brilliant Sheffield” I had forgotten about til mentioned!). I also purchased the full videos of the 6-1 against Chester and when we beat top flight Newcastle 2-0 in the League Cup. Absolutely tedious to watch a whole game back, though!

I thought it was Rob Brydon doing his small man in a box routine

Loved this one and without wanting to sound like a philistine. I think I preferred it when it was my difficult to find the footage from games. It is easy too easy nowadays and there’s just so much of it too.

On that note, any chance of posting links to all the videos discussed on the podcast, here?

As with the commentary episodes, I really enjoyed this one. Looking forward to part two. Difficult for younger viewers to understand how little United there was on the telly…which is why I loved the Match of the Day video. Also it was the BBC and United stuff would’ve on YTV which added that bit more for me.

I’d not watched “Life with the Blades” before so it was good to see that one. Bentley really was the missing Chuckle brother. In my mind, for all these years, I had a very different person to the voice!
