Michael Higdon + a released Billy Sharp...

Rumour that he'll be at the York game today

Furthermore, the Freeman/Bennett deal should be tied up nest week. Hold up nothing to do with Freeman apparently

Apparently the hold up is something to do with us paying a loan fee for Bennett, opposed to a fee for Freeman so Forest don't get anything out of it! Wouldn't be much so not sure how true that is!

Is it just me who doubts that Higdon is the man to rip this division a new one? He's an ok signing, however I would rather have Billy :)

It's difficult to comment on Higdon with so little information available. He looks like he's got an appetite to mix it, no bad thing, and to be disruptive with an opposing defence can only be a good thing. Rickie Lambert was never going to break records for having pace, but his all round game more than compensated for this. There's more than one way to crack a nut, and I trust Cloughie's judgement in knowing what we need to make us effective. This season will be a scrap. no one will give us a thing, so what we get we earn through hard work and great teamwork. UTB

Depends what the opportunity cost is in this scenario.lets create 3 possibilities:

1) it's Higdon or no one else (possible loan deal later on)
2) Higdon with a view to another striker coming after
3) Higdon or sharp (or another of Clough's undisclosed targets)

Then clearly we would all go for 1 and 2, but if it's Higdon instead of someone else then I'm not so sure. However, if he's the only target left, get him in now please!

That'll be Silent, who's forgotten how to spell his own name :)
In fact my great grandfather was born as William Sharp in 1861 and had the same name in the 1871,1881 and 1891 census (same for his 5 brothers) but before the 1901 census the E was added to his surname (same for his 3 brothers but not the other 2) and my great grandad (died in 1943) and his three brothers kept the E in their surname until their deaths. Not sure of the reason

Despite what the Healthy eating brigade tell you, eeees are important! ;)

Here's an old joke about eeees....... borrowed from a forum elsewhere hence the different font size etc

A Yorkshireman's' wife dies and the widower decides that her headstone should have the words "she were thine" engraved on it.

He calls the stonemason, who assures him that the headstone will be ready a few days after the funeral.

True to his word the stone mason calls the widower to say that the headstone is ready and would he like to come and have a look.

When the widower gets there he takes one look at the stone to see that it's been engraved "she were thin".

He explodes - "Fooking 'ell man, you've left the fooking "e" out, you've left the fooking "e" out".

The stone mason apologises and assures the poor widower that it will be rectified the following morning.

Next day comes and the widower returns to the stonemason - "There you go sir, I've put the "e" on the stone for you".

The widower looks at the stone and then reads out aloud - "e she were thin".

:D

NC says he is hopeful of completing a signing (or two!) by next weekend, Higdon will be one of them i think.

I'd no idea who he was so just Googled him. I see he's almost 31 and has only really done well for Motherwell. I know stats don't tell you everything, but we need a goal scorer.

Billy Sharp over Higdon for me please, if it is a choice between the two.

He did well last season as well.

He did well last season as well.

Actually, fair point, one in two is not to be sniffed at, I can appreciate that. Are there fewer teams in the Dutch league? I'm just wondering why he only played 28 games last season. Is he injury prone at all?

My preference for Sharp is mainly because he's been fairly consistent throughout his career and usually manages a goal every other game or so. He's also three years younger than Higdon but managed about 40 more career goals, all in England, which makes a difference.

18 teams. 34 games

Here's hoping we can pull off the Higdon deal (not because I rate him, I don't know much about him, but we need some bodies up there at the very least at this stage). He looks (from YouTube) like he could be a very handy addition, he might not get all the goals we need but he'll pose a certain threat up there which Porter can't. Really hope we can sign Bennett on loan too, his pace will add another dimension to worry defences. With him on the field these slow League 1 centre halves will have to drop in case of the ball in behind, this should also open up spaces for our creative midfielders- Scougall, Baxter and DeGirolamo, to maybe start imposing themselves in the final third. Baxter and Porter are far too easy to defend against in my opinion, they can't go in behind and neither of them are direct enough, or physical enough to be a nuisance, they're always right in front of the defenders and the defenders know how to marshall them and restrict them to sideways/backward passes. Porter occasionally can play a ball out to the wing (forwards) on the turn and take up a good position in the box, but he isn't great in the air and relies on wingers making it to the byline and pulling it back to him, and even then his finishing is woeful, it'll be nice to have a bit of a presence up there.

On a complete side note, was really happy to hear Clough's comment about him "putting the youngsters in because (he'd) rather lose with them than the others." I sensed an angry tone in his voice after today's friendly, preseason or not, I think those lads got a real bollocking after today's performance. At this moment there's no reason why McGahey, DeGirolamo and Reed (especially) shouldn't be in that first team. Good on them

I'd be very happy with Higdon - I appreciate what some are saying with regard to his age, but our squad is youthful on the whole and this is someone who has scored goals at a very consistent rate over the last three seasons. At a higher level than we currently operate at as well might I add.

He is a good size physically, over six foot and a strong lad, ideal (in theory) at least to help the ball stick up front when we launch those counters with Murphy, Scoogs, Flynn etc.

This obsession with a 'proven 20 goal striker' puzzles me. If we sign a striker who manages, say 10 goals next season in the league but is an excellent foil for the rest of our talented attacking players, then that's all we'll need in my opinion to win promotion.

The more I think about it the more I really want us to sign him. NEC scored 54 goals (Higdon - 14, 26%) finished 2nd bottom and got relegated. 3 out of the 4 players that scored more league goals than him played for top 5 teams and have since moved on. (Finnbogason, Tadic, Pelle) to top teams in Real.Sociedad and Southampton respectively. For a combined fee of around £26m. In Higdon's last 4 season he has scored 72 goals in 147 games. Basically 1 in 2. He has atleast another 2 good seasons left in him and I'm not sure we could sign another striker with a recent record as good as that.

Am I the only one who thinks Baxter will bag 15+ this season?
Hope you're right, but I can't see it.
I personally think Baxter could be the Jewell in our cown- higdon and ched up top(?!) Flynn and murph bombing down the wings with Jose pulling the strings. He's quality, but with the midfielders we have now(and I'm not saying any of them are better than him because I don't believe they are)I even worry for his place in the team

In some of the posts above the absence of McNulty makes me think that sometimes we reach a conclusion far too easily. Same thing happened with Coady, it took him some to adjust but being the positive, determined guy he is, young Conor slowly began to reveal the qualities we all came to appreciate.

If we sign Higdon, we could have the makings of the historical big 'un/little 'un combination....if not MM then it could be Diego, but I think the addition of an experienced big lump up front will give us a new dimension that will open up a number of different options to our attacking play.

Then of course there's the question of Evans.....again, if we sign him it would suggest that Clough has the right type of problems to consider in this most important of seasons.

Yep, it's the presence we need. Shipperley only scored about 11 in our promotion season but he added a lot more to the team, took defenders out of the game (not always literally :)) to give the likes of Webber, Kabba and the midfield lads time and space.

So just to clarify...
We haven't even contacted his club yet right?

So we have a webber and a kabba now too?
